Almost falling back to old habits.

Hey! So I made this year about giving it my all and doing something I never thought I would do. And I did it. -95lbs. I had never felt better in all of my life. But once I hit my goal I had felt it was time to start eating normal again... What a mistake that was. I felt I (deserved) to have nice things again.. Sugary fatty foods.. That was my idea of nice things. Well after a few months of that completely shamed to even go near the scale I went on a cruise to Mexico and they had all you can eat food for free, 24hrs a day... For a week. It was ridiculous. When I came back I weighed 22lbs more then my lowest weight. I felt lost and that all of this hard work was for nothing... I didn't want that at all. I went back on my diet immediately and some how managed to get back that same drive that got me going In the first place. It has been about a month since that cruise and I am down 12lbs already. I didn't write this to tell you about me. I'm telling you that it's not over once you start going back to old ways.. You can catch it. I will not let it win again. I am motivated once again and I am ready to hit a new goal. This time, to be smart about it. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read this.

When you reach your goal it is not over. Keep tracking your intake until you can let go! Right?6 -
Good for you! I keep a 5 pound range for maintaince. Yup...the diet is not over! There is no going back to eating normal (the way you ate, when you gained all the weight). It is a lifestyle change of changing your eating habits and lifestyle. You did great for getting back and losing the weight.10

dude, it's crazy....like dinnertime i was eating gluten-free chicken nuggets with bbq sauce and a tbsp. of ranch to dip and they tasted super awesome....i microwaved 8 of them and as i was eating them, i started eating them faster and my mind hit me with microwave 10 more...i could of literally ate the whole package at that moment...but i finished the 8, drank some diet snapple and left the kitchen with this FIGHT or FAIL attitude, and after about 15-20 min, fullness + "you're in full control" realization hit strong and the desire vanished...it is pretty scary tho because i had eaten well beforehand (breakfast, lunch, snacks)6

I eat everything I did before but smaller portions so eventually it's become "normal". I confess tho, I don't crave sweet sugary things. But my hubby, who lost 60lbs & is keeping it off is a sweet a-holic but he's learned to eat small portions of goodies & makes a smoothie if he wants more out of fruit, yogurt etc4

Nice job on netting around only a 10lb gain overall! A positive attitude coupled with hard work and determination works wonders. Whether or not some of it might have been water weight after that cruise, it's great that you faced the truth: things were getting out of hand. To the OP - way to get back on track. I too find it easy to fall back into bad habits and still think about food as a reward. It's a battle to not constantly deny yourself but also not lose control. Good luck!3

How is it going OP? I'm constantly trying to get back in check. The last couple weeks have been bad (too much baking, totally my fault). Great job for getting back on track!2

Similar story here. I lost almost 70 pounds, maintained for a few months just fine, but the last few weeks have been crazy and I can feel my clothes getting tighter. I'm back on it as of today. Just hoping I too can rekindle that motivation!8

Hey everybody!! Thank you so much for the insightful comments! A little update. I'm down those 20lbs and still going strong! My goal is to be down another 10lbs by Christmas and then starting the new year with other goals! I really do appreciate all of you guys and your guidance. I'll check back with you all in a few weeks!23

Glad I'm not the only one. I'm fighting hard to get back where I was. (I'm 15 lbs up). I won't let "obese" happen to me again. CadenDavid, I'm hoping to be as successful as you! My initial loss was 95 as well!5

I had a similar experience. I gained 15lb in 3 and a half week vacation. Straight back on diet and lost it. It did take me 10 weeks though. Wish it was as easy to lose as it is to put it on!7

It is comforting to read so many posts that I can relate to. I started using MFP in March 2015, and between that time and the summer of 2016, I lost 115 lbs! I think my weight loss has stopped, so I am assuming my body is at a set point. I was doing 1800 calories a day, but since I hit my "goal weight" I tend to eat more, based on my activity. I admit, I have days where I am probably over my budget. I sometimes feel guilty about that. I am actually up around 5-6 lbs from my lowest weight this last summer. Water weight can fluctuate your weight daily, but I am not doing too bad I suppose. I sometimes wished I could restrict my diet to around 1500 calories a day, and never go over that. I could probably lose 10-15 more lbs. I just can't see myself eating 1500 calories a day continuously. I many times in the 2000's (lower end) and am very active. So my weight will pretty much stay within a 5 lb range. I watch it very closely though, because I do not want to end up where I was at before I started this diet. Sometimes I wonder if it is really worth depriving myself of all the yummy foods I used to eat all the time. I guess I do not deprive myself, but I don't eat anywhere near what I used to pre-diet. I will say that when I go to the store and try on clothes, that is my big pay off! I definitely want to keep tracking my calories because I could easily go off track!10

It's really not about a diet, to lose weight. It's a lifestyle change, knowing how to eat, what to eat and when to eat it. It has to be permanent, you've already seen how the other lifestyle works for you.2

This is exactly what I do. Once I go over the maintenance range I'll be logging every gramme again, once I'm within the range, I loosen up bit.
I also threw out all my big clothes, so I've no choice but to maintain!!5 -
This is one of favorite posts on MFP.
It's so easy to assume that a body weight is the target, but at least for me, it's about what's in my head rather than a number on the scale. I still have those 10lbs to lose that I put on after reaching my goal, but I've managed to stop it from progressing 2-3 times. The first time felt rather soul-destroying like I'd let myself down, but now I've realized that it's all a learning process and that's just fine. It is perfectly possible to regain the degree of control you need to keep your weight down while not developing OCD or perfectionist tendencies. And you never do start from scratch, because you're always building on what you've done before.
Exercise has helped me a lot - to take the edge of some of my weekend over-indulgences, work on developing a stronger, healthier body and a healthier mind. And after the "glow" of the new body wears off, exercise helps me appreciate what my body can do every time I lift a heavier weight or run an easier or quicker mile. 4 years ago, I would never have thought that possible.4 -

You can never go back to "normal" eating. Once you hit your goal weight, you must CONTINUE "healthy eating"4

This is what I try to explain when my friends tell me I should stop weighing myself and watching what goes in my mouth. The past has proven if I ignore both these things I balloon! It's a constant battle of staying self aware I find. But worth it!!6

You are me in dude form. I lost 100lbs then thought... "I've done it, I deserve pizza"... every day for like a month. I'm now 22lbs heavier than my lowest and could cry!!!

Another member wrote something in a different thread several weeks ago that really struck me. You have to come to terms with the fact that you can't go back to your old habits, your old ways of eating, and then you have to mourn that way of life. It's a major loss for some of us - give it the recognition it deserves. Then move on with your new way of life because that's where you ultimately want to be anyway. Sounds like you're moving in that direction. Congrats on all the hard work you've done.11

Reaching your goal is not time to stop. You must continue with the plan and keep using the new habits that you have learned. Change this and you will slip back. Take it from someone who did! Don't go back to eating the old way which is the way that caused you to be heavier.

For me it never stops. If I dont log and excercise consistently then I KNOW that I will fall back into my old ways. I have accepted that logging will always be something I do. Some people say they can't imagine tracking calories everyday and I say to them that I can't imagine being obese everyday - I spent way too much time being that for way too long so no going back for this gal!4
