Can't eat treats anymore?

I've been dieting since July (so about 4.5 months) and am down 51lbs. I'm eating 70-80 grams of protein a day and staying under 150g carbs. I'm also staying under 50g sugar. Recently, it was my daughter's birthday and I budgeted the calories/macros for a cupcake. I got very sick after eating it. Again, this past weekend I went for my annual Starbucks holiday drink (which is a favorite tradition for me) and was very, very sick afterward. It feels like I just can't eat large amounts of sugar anymore, which should be a good thing, but actually, I'm kind of hating. Is this a thing? Will I never be able to have Christmas cookies again?

I feel crappy when i eat junk now XD Im overly sensitive to salts and sugars now. Its a good thing, Can get alot of the same satisfaction off healthier options now. I do miss the awesome feeling of sinking my teeth into a greasy cheeseburger or whatever though XD

Kind of odd that you are having a response like that. I wonder if it isn't that fat more than the sugar - you aren't on a low carb diet, really.

I usually feel bad physically for a couple of days after "treating" myself, but it is usually only if I eat too much of the treat. Smaller portions (usually about half of what you are served) don't bother me much.

Its a trade off, but it can also help you avoid those cravings if you know you will feel bad after. Sometimes its worth it, sometimes its not.

It might be the fat.. unless of course the OP has developed diabetes or insulin resistance of some sort. The OP might want to get that checked out.

Try the Starbucks with skim milk and no whip cream. Get the low sugar sweeteners too and see how this works for you! I'm doing that.

Why would I develop either when I'm eating well and losing weight? I'm not even obese anymore according to my BMI and I didn't have IR or diabetes before I started dieting (I did get checked out before.) Is there a reason to think that I would develop it in these last few months of healthy eating?

Its not sugar for me, it the combination of eating something outside my normal calorie choices that is higher fat and higher carbs (very calorie dense)

Might want to introduce foods back in your diet slowly to see how your body reacts if you have been restricting..

Always consult with your doctor when something is new or changed that equates to you not feeling well.. Could be dietary or medical in nature.

hard to imagine a cookie or two could cause that response...is there anything else it could be? flu? virus? pregnant?

It's probably not the sugar but the fact that your stomach isn't used to rich food anymore.

I would agree that it is probably the fat.

I have a pretty similar reaction when i eat something fried, baked desserts, and full-fat ice cream here.

It is unlikely that this is the case. But it could be a great deterrent from eating "crap" food.

Happens to some people without reason or for unusual reasons. Does it run in your family at all? I've read (and no, I don't have sources, so it's hearsay), that some supplements can cause IR in some people with long term or overuse. All I am saying is you may want to get checked if sugar is making you ill like you describe. Granted a LOT of sugar will make any normal person ill, and there are times a super sweet treat will make me a little nauseous unless I eat it slowly and/or eat/drink something not so sweet with it. It may be nothing but if it keeps up, or worsens it can't hurt to be checked. There's a simple test doctors can do, they give you a drink which is very sweet, then test your blood.

Anyway, it does run in my family, quite common actually. It was one of the reasons I chose to give up sugar for the most part before it happened to me in old age (which seems to be the common factor in my family.. usually to those of us over 40). Probably genetic in my case.

no I know what it's from I have gallstones and the past year i've been slowly trying to figure out what triggers the pain and what doesn't usually when my stomach is full anything I eat causes an episode well I ate a pretty heavy dinner. I also just got diagnosed with Lactose Intolerance even though I don't listen all the time and had a cup of chocolate milk yesterday and that didn't help the cookie situation either

From the description of your reaction you may actually be allergic to sugar. I tested allergic to cane sugar a number of years ago. It would give me a very similar reaction to what you're describing.

We eat a fairly whole foods diet. If I eat "crap" I will feel lethargic and just generally blase for a few days while my body works it out. When I would eat sugar I would get actual stomach discomfort and if it was a lot of sugar it would go straight through me.

Your response could be either of these things. You can test the sugar thing by eating it three days in a row and watching your response. If you just feel blah it's more likely the excess sugar and fat. If you have stomach pains, bowel Changes (in either direction), skin reactions, etc. then it's likely an allergy. You can actually blood test for it but doctor's office tests are notoriously inaccurate. The ELISA allergy test would pick it up if you even had a slight allergic response to it.

    For me, it was gluten.

I inadvertently stopped eating much of it through trying to get in enough protein. Then one day, I ate a Chick-fil-A sandwich and instantly I was sick. As it turns out, gluten was also the cause of my unexplained high liver enzymes. I stopped eating it altogether, and my blood-work returned to normal.

I'm sure that's not the case for many, but I thought I'd share in case it's the case for any of you who all of a sudden got sick from a cookie or a cupcake. :)

oh my gosh, I bet that's what it is! I have sort of gone gluten free, just because of how I'm eating. That makes total sense. Thank you!

dont jump to conclusions. i know it's trendy nowadays to be gluten free, but if you seriously think you have a gluten intolerance then you should go to your doctor. no reason to go ahead and cut out a huge food group without any evidence.

How would gluten have caused the issue with the starbucks drink?

If anything, the most likely candidate would be dairy.

One of my kids is lactose intolerant and a glass of straight up chocolate milk will take her out for hours, like literally on the bathroom floor in agony. Cupcakes, cookies, starbucks etc all can have dairy in them, not to mention milk-why on earth are you consuming these things if your body cannot process them?! Being lactose intolerant is a real thing that has real (and sometimes very intense) consequences with dairy consumption. Why do you not think this is the culprit but sugar is?

Celiac Disease would cause that kind of reaction. My daughter vomits violently after ingesting even the tiniest amount and gets the joy of days of loose stools and migraines for days after that.

It's best to visit a doctor if you suspect a food intolerance for proper testing before giving up any foods. Specifically with gluten, being gluten free before you are tested for Celiac can result in a false negative.

because I love dairy so much! no like I said I was just recently diagnosed in August and I never had a test done or anything. I understand how your child feels I first went to the doctor because I couldn't understand why my stomach hurt all the time and I was having extreme heartburn. I told my doctor and he told me to avoid large amounts of dairy and see if that helps well I still have heartburn but not as bad but I can def tell when I eat dairy that my body doesn't like it at all

Do you take lactaid pills? Those help my daughter with some things-she still cannot drink milk (she uses almond milk now), and cannot eat ice cream, but the pills allow her to eat things like cheese and baked goods that have dairy in them.

There are also lactose free milks and ice creams that are actually quite good. Plus hard dairy products like hard cheeses have a minute amount of lactose so don't bother the majority of people.

Also, Fairlife Milk is cows milk that is lactose free and has double the protein per serving.
