Ooowwww! I am having sciatic nerve pain on the right side. It's awful!! I can't sit or lay down comfortably and I was awake like all night because I couldn't get comfortable! I dunno what's causing this exactly, but I use my elliptical 30-60 minutes a day, maybe it's my shoes? I have Sketcher's Shape-Ups.... could that be the problem? I think I've heard people say that those shoes gave them back problems. What can I do for this? It's awful!!!

change shoes. I have been told that a chiropracter can help. The farther the pain shoots down your leg the worse it is. I have had issues with mine now and then and I feel you. It hurts. Have you been wearing the shape ups long? I wear them only because they are cushy but when I first got them it took some time to adjust.0

You need to reduce the inflammation. I have it and my doc suggests rest and continuous ibuprofen for several days. Do u stretch before and after exercise?0

I have had the Shape-Ups for about 6 months. I don't wear them all of the time though, only when I work out... I'm a flip-flop person lol I hate wearing sneakers.0

Do you have any medical issues with you back? I know I do but I had an injury when I was 16 to cause it. I would go to your doctor maybe they have a suggestion! Of course I would not mess with it but I have things to do to take care of that problem and has never heard anyone say that before unless they had something with a disc protruding or if they were pregnant. There might be a reason is all.0

It could be the flip-flops. They are bad to cause back pain because they have no support. I have a pair of Chacos that I wear all summer- and I highly recommend them. I found them online for about half of what they sell in the stores. I have 3 bulging discs in my back, and 1 pinched nerve- and since going from flip flops to Chacos, my back pain is much less. Might be something to check out.0

oh hun big huggs for you... if you can~ take ibuprofen for inflammation. you get sciatica from your nerve being impinged... go see your primary doctor or orthopedic doctor. i have had back troubles for 2 years and failed surgery... good luck and hope you feel better...0

Stretch your hamstring and your abductor muscles. I bet the pain will be gone afterwards. It will come back though if you don't keep on your stretching...0

I am having the same issue, My pain is now shooting down the left leg. I have heard its caused by a slipped disk in your back or something like that. I am going to try a chiropractor and see if that helps.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon! I feel your pain0 -
I was having that problem after starting strength training at the gym. I was able to identify the machine causing the pain because it only happened when I was on that machine. I quit using it and haven't had the problem yet. I hope you will be able to find where the agitation is coming from too, try working out without the Shape Ups.0

ice your lower back every 3 hours or so for only 15 min. and NEVER heat. I would get to the chiropractor. I guarantee it has nothing to do with your shoes. Make sure your drinking a load of water. Most likely you have a disc that is inflammed or out of place and is pinching your sciatic nerve causing the pain to run down your leg. I deal with this all the time unfortunately (ice on my back as we speak). I really recommend frequent chiropractor visits to stay in line, or it will only get worse.0

How's your lower back feeling? YOu very well may have pinched a nerve somehow.0 -
There is nothing you can do to fix the problem completely without surgery. There are many things you can do to try to make it less uncomfortable. The doc told me....losing weight, stretching fully before and after workouts and when you wake in the morning. You can take over the counter for the pain but it is from your shoes. I'm the opposite....I wear heels all the time and that's what is getting me. The flip flops have ZERO support for your feet and back for that matter. I also use this great product called Biofreeze. It's sorta like icy hot. I have someone rub it in for me after a hot bath...which also helps. I have notices since I've dropped weight...it does not act up nearly as much. Good luck babe0

After seeing specialists, debating surgery, taking Opiates for a year to reduce pain, and basically dreading the thought of living the rest of my life that way, I saw someone who knew what they were talking about. They suggested those stretches (may or may not work for you) and I was pain free five minutes later and as long as I keep on top of my stretching, the pain doesn't come back.
However, the more I exercise, the more I need to stretch. Otherwise the pain is back in a day or two. Apparently sciatica is frequently caused by short hamstrings crushing the disc in your back which in turn pinches the nerve. Stretching my abductors is what fixes my problem.0 -
My right side is like that from a car accident I was in several years ago. Physical Therapy helped, and the chiropractor was able to help it as well. I think shoes can definitely make it worse, I keep orthotics in my shoes I use for walking. Stretching will also really help during an d after a workout. I still do the core strengthening exercises the physical therapist showed me and they really help. I always go for the water workout when I can because it's easier on the back and knees! Hope it gets better soon!0

LOL, nobody here can diagnose what's going on or tell you what's happening until you see a doctor. There are a few things that can lead to the Sciatic nerve pain. It almost feels like your leg is on fire? Go see a Neurologist if you can or get a referal from your GP.0

I have never had back problems before the last few days that I've had this sciatic pain. It's obnoxious! Thanks for the info everyone0

I developed sciatic pain after exercising about a couple of months ago (had bad form). Definitely suggest going to a doctor if you can as there are several causes for it. Since its has flared up again, I take 2 aleve twice a day, always wear inserts in my shoes, and do a lot of stretching. I found this website helpful:

Good luck to you!0 -
I had that issue, not from exercising, but just because I have back issues. I was going to physical therapy at the time and the therapist had me lay on my stomach and she pushed on my butt cheek while I pushed my hip into the table and it made it go away. She was wonderful. Of course a doctor has to prescribe physical therapy, but maybe a chriopractor could help.0
