What is your opinion on "Diet" Soda....
I am condisering giving it up.
I've done some research and I am aware of the implications of sweetners, carbonation, etc
What do you think?

I personally do not like diet soda all that much. I will only drink Diet Pepsi on occasion - I'm talking once a month if that. I'm not a huge fan of all of the chemicals & stuff.0
-
You can live without it, it has absolutely no benefits.0

I just gave up diet coke a little over a week ago! Totally worth it. You will drink more water which is waaaay better for your body! I have heard people say that for every one soda you drink (diet or not) you have to drink at least 4 8oz glasses of water. So...why not just drink the water to start with!0
-
I have one 20oz diet coke a day. I love it! I don't drink coffee so this is my little caffeine kick. I try to make sure I drink at least 84oz of water a day, though. An extra 20oz for the bottle of soda pop.0
-
I, personally, think life is too damn short to worry about whether one coke zero a day is going to kill me! I have a better chance, GOD FORBID, of getting ran over while running. If you want one, drink it! That's just my opinion...
PS: I drink anywhere from 100-150 ounces of water a day. The coke zero is my treat to myself.0 -
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO0

a BIG no for me. I find that it bloats my stomach terribly, and I feel sluggish and heavy. Also, I read some article that the bodys response to artificial sweetener and regular sugar is similar, and I just dont want those spikes in my insulin production in response to blood sugar. Im all about the blood sugar stabilization right now as my primary focus...and its working!!!0

If I didnt get to have my sugar free redbull I would be a very mean person and be eating a ton more - it takes away my hunger and stops me from craving chocolate0
-
I love diet soda, but I definitely notice a difference when I don't drink it. I'm a lot less bloated. I know that all of the artificial ingredients aren't so good for you, but I guess we sometimes just have to pick our poision!0
-
I gave up drinking basically everything except plain ice tea and water and milk ( for my shakes). However once in a great while ( like once a month ) I will have a sugar free redbull. I do not drink coke anymore because well it isn't good for you. But, we all have our vices. Just try and space yours out.0
-
I personally gave it up, but if I'm out and one falls my way, I will have it and enjoy it!0
-
I make my own with Soda Stream. It is the only way I will drink enough water.0

I love diet soda.. I live off the stuff. I drink at least 4 16oz bottles a day. I don't like water. I force myself to drink water and tea when it's readily available (eating out).
98lbs lost0 -

I'm JUST now getting to where I call coke, soda. Growing up, we called all flavors of soda coke. When a guest would come by and we offer a drink...."Do you want a coke?" "sure" "Ok, we have Dr Pepper or Pepsi." It's silly, I know.
Now that I don't drink any carbonated drinks....I call them soda. Weird.
I used to drink Coke out of the soda fountain ALL DAY LONG. :drinker: Then I tried diet. Yuck. Then went to Coke Zero. But if Icouldn't have the real thing, I didn't want it at all!
Now I only drink water and tea...oh and a half cup, to a cup of coffee a day. I'm not even missing my coke.0 -

I was severely addicted to Diet Coke and I saw nothing wrong with it. I had not drank regular soda in years because I refuse to drink calories. However, my appetite was getting out of control and thoughI had successfully dieted in the past I just could not get back on the wagon this time. I gave up diet soda - or pop (when in rome... ), and I can tell you I am back on the wagon for my 2nd week now and I have to remind myself to eat where I initially had to make myself stick to the scheduled eating and snacking times. I have done a lot of googling on the topic and they seem to be of the opinion that over time it makes you gain more weight and I would have to agree. I am now exercising, doing MFP religiously, and giving more time to prayer and study and I have found myself far less hungry and more fulfilled than ever so I am not changing one single thing.
I would suggest giving it up and maybe allowing yourself to have one every now and then if you must. I gave up artificial sweetner altogether except for Stevia in my cofee - I just can't do black coffee. There is also a natural line like Crystal light called Hansen's Fruit Stix. I drink that when I want more than water, but it's mostly water.
I have been back on the wagon since last Tuesday and I am down 4lbs so far...
All the best to you - sorry if that was too long0 -
I don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners, so I would never touch one -- they just taste yucky! lol
Honestly, for health reasons, it's always better to eat and drink whole foods. There are chemicals in soda/pop no matter whether it's diet or "real" that aren't good for you.
However, we all have our vices and if you enjoy it, then have some. Maybe cut down if you're worried about health implications.0 -
I read before that a diet "pop" or "soda" (we call it pop too here, my husband calls it soda, lol) is really no better for an "edit" (I heard a lady call her "diet" an "edit" cause she was editing her lifestyle) than a regular pop.0

DO NOT! Diet soda not only has high fructose corn syrup (which consumed in high quantities is destructive to your system and messes with your metabolism) but many times is sweetened with Aspartame. Aspartame is EVIL! Do some research for what it does to you. It's yucky!!0

I'm with ya!! I only have 1 a day and I love it...it might be Diet Dr Pepper or Diet Coke. I usually don't want for more than one anyway and I drinl 80+ oz of water a day0 -
For me...
It's a DO NOT! But this is me. I can't tell you how long it has been since I have had a soda. I drink water (first and foremost), tea, milk, and I use crystal light packets and the walmart knock off (made with stevia).0 -
I can't live without my red bulls, it makes me happy and helps get me through the day! lol0

One a day is not going to kill you. It's when it is your primary source of liquid that it is bad for you. As always, all things in moderation.0 -
There are a lot of studies that relate diet soda to overweight people, and claim causation. I don't think a SINGLE one of those studies has proven that diet soda CAUSES anyone to be overweight. I think we overweight people are just drinking it because we ARE overweight ( If I was skinny maybed I'd go for the regular!) at a higher frequency.
There is some evidence that diet soda can make you feel like you want sugar after you drink it. Like your brain says to your stomach " here comes sugar" and then your stomach is craving the actual sugar it's been promised, and none comes from the diet soda so you seek it elsewhere ( excuse my very scientifict analysis here LOL) and ger hungry after you have a diet soda. If you want to see if this is true-- track what you eat after you drink it, and see if you do tend to eat/ crave more food when you drink it.
The carbonation ( this goes for any carbonated drink --even seltzer can also cause bloating)
I've resolved, to drink it in moderation. If I'm just dying for something to have in my hand after I've eaten my 1200 calories, I'll pull out a diet rootbeer in a can and sip it slowly with a straw ( it helps).
If your dying for it, test out the science on yourself, see what your behavior is when you drink it. If you can't live without it have just some.
Also for those of you worried about unnatural sweetner, the health food stores have diet soda sweetened with Stevia, an all-natural no calorie sweetener, and though its more expensive, it's JUST as delicious as a diet coke.
Also Arizona diet green tea is the best! I drink about a gallon jug a week, and I think it boosts my energy and metabolism too!0 -
give the diet pop up, it tastes rubbish anyways.
i like to drink flavoured water or squash, i at least drink 2 litres of peach squash a day lol xx0 -
I personally drink regular soda if I really want soda (maybe 1 every week or two). I find that it makes me think harder about if I want the soda or not.
As for diet soda, if you want it, go for it.0 -
I was a HUGE diet soda fan - especially diet Pepsi! After reading several articles from these message boards, I gave it up too! One article I read said that it makes you gain weight. I've been up and down with my weight so many times - I figured I'd try losing with out it. So far so good! I don't miss it. I will save it for a special treat - like when I go out to dinner or something. :flowerforyou:0

i used to drink anywhere from 2-3 cans of diet coke a day. but when i talked to my doctor about my wieght, she suggested trying to give it up. she said even though it has 0 calories, there's something in it to make your body crave food, so you'll get those calories that aren't in the soda somewhere else. i stopped drinking soda about 2 montha ago and surprisingly haven't missed it at all. i feel much better and i dropped almost 10 pounds the first week i stopped drinking it. may have just been a coinsidence, but i would try to give it up or at least cut back from how many u drink now. if you're out to eat or at a friends/family gathering and soda is there don't feel like you can't have one. for some people it is really hard to just stop completely. so if you want to "treat" yourself i say go for it! not sure if i've helped at all, but good luck with whatever you choose!!0

Coke Zero doesn't have high fructose corn syrup.
And I got this from TimeHealth something I consider a reliable source:
In 1981, the synthetic compound aspartame was approved for use, and it capitalized on saccharin's bad publicity by becoming the leading additive in diet colas. In 1995 and 1996, misinformation about aspartame that linked the chemical to everything from multiple sclerosis to Gulf War syndrome was widely disseminated on the Internet. While aspartame does adversely effect some people — including those who are unable to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine — it has been tested more than 200 times, and each test has confirmed that your Diet Coke is safe to drink. Nor have any health risks been detected in more than 100 clinical tests of sucralose, a chemically altered sugar molecule found in food, drinks, chewing gum and Splenda.
The fear-mongering and misinformation plaguing the faux-sweetener market seems to be rooted in a common misconception. No evidence indicates that sweeteners cause obesity; people with weight problems simply tend to eat more of it. While recent studies have suggested a possible link between artificial sweeteners and obesity, a direct link between additives and weight gain has yet to be found. The general consensus in the scientific community is that saccharin, aspartame and sucralose are harmless when consumed in moderation. And while cyclamate is still banned in the U.S., many other countries still allow it; it can even be found in the Canadian version of Sweet'n Low. Low-calorie additives won't make you thinner or curb your appetite. But they help unsweetened food taste better without harming you. And that's sweet enough.
