Protein shakes give me headaches. Does this happen to anyone else? I notice every time I have a shake I get this annoying headache. I wonder why?

It's most likely another ingredient in the shake -- if you were intolerant to protein itself, you would notice it in other ways.

Not me. Whether making them with 8 oz milk, 6 oz milk, 4 oz milk, or 4 oz kefir or 6 oz kefir. I've never had a headache following consumption of a protein shake that I make. I don't recall ever having a protein shake made by anyone else.

I also can count on one hand the number of times I've had a headache, so maybe I'm not the best example.

might be the type of protein used in the shake...for example, whey protein gives me a headache, so I use egg white protein instead and no issues

@deannalfisher Yes! It's whey protein powder. I only mix it with water. I will try the egg white protein, thanks!

i hope that helps - there are lots of different types of protein out there for shakes etc - i'd see if i can find a place that does sample sizes/individual servings so you don't get stuck with something that doesn't work for you :)

Does it have artificial sweeteners in it? Too many sweeteners especially aspartame give me a huge headache

I was going to suggest that the culprit could be artificial sweeteners as well. I don't personally get headaches from them, but know several people who do.

As they are supplement in order to hit minimum protein why don't you just adjust your diet so that you can avoid the need to keep consuming them?

It might be none of the above, you could just be dehydrated. When increasing your protein you should just drink more water to help your kidneys

I have a lactose allergy so i read up on it and that would cause the headaches. I agree that it is not necessary for me to take it anyway since i am getting plenty of protein naturally through the foods i eat. Thanks all, this was helpful.

It's mostly likely one of the ingredients...

You don't have to have protein shakes...I wouldn't use them if they gave me a headache.
