feeling 'bigger' and the dreaded scales!

Hi everyone :-)

Hope you have all had a fantastic day!
I am after some advice please... I wil give a brief background, but it will be short - I promise!

To start with - I weighed myself just before my wedding (about 2 months ago now) on scales I use regularly for consistancy at the gym (the pay 30p type) and it said I was 10st 3lbs which I was pleased about as the hard work had been paying off!

Since then, well 3 days before our wedding, my husband has been suffering terribly with a herniated disk and sciatica... This has meant my usual eating, exercise and sleeping routine is wayyy out.. we have had many trips in the early hours of the morning to the hospital, doc home visits etc and nothing is helping him with his pain which is horrible to see. Along with this he need help with dressing, mobility, emotional support etc hence exercise not really hapening. Eating is hit and miss due to the weird hours we are both awake at (my hubby hasn't been able to sit down in 2 months, and can only lie down for about 3 hours max) so when I do eat, its hasn't exactly been healthy.. :-(

Right - onto my main question!

I weighed myself again today on the usual paying scales and it said I weigh 10st 4 lbs.
I also weighed myself on some random scales in to gym (used by a lot of people) and it said not far off 11st.

Now... I feel bigger and flabbier, and clothes are a little more snug (the thighs / hips / stomach area) though not enough to be a dress size bigger - this would suggest some weight gain. Though, my husband thinks I am imagining it..!

Sooo how can it be that there appears to be more fat, and a some inch gain - yet my usual trustworthy scales say a mere 1lb gain..
Part of me doesn't want to believe them as I feel I must be nearer 11st.. Surely I can't be bigger yet be basically the same weight..

Any advice is more than welcome!
Weight and image is a funny thing at the best of times isn't it!!

I feel puzzled!

PS - I should add that even though I have been eatin more junk food (bad me!) I havnt necessarily been eating proper full meals.. I know junk food is higher in calories so I assumed I would therefore gain weight.. I have still been trying to track and I have been over calories more often than I would like.. This is partly why the scales baffle me!

I don't really know much about how all that works either. But heres my thought..... Sometimes you can lose inches but not have any or have very little weight loss. Maybe it is the same. You can gain inches but not show much on the scale. If your clothes are snugger and you feel a lil bit more heavy your probably not imagining it. I have been there and you seem like you are bit in tune to your body.

Hope this helps a lil bit. Good luck with the wedding and I hope your hubby feels better soon.

You've probably just lost some of your muscle tone because of not getting to the gym, and thats why you're looking a little 'looser' than you were, but haven't put any weight on.

    Hi there..
The same thing happened to me today. I weighed myself two weeks ago and I dropped 7 lbs. Today I was up 2 pounds but I lost over 6 inches in body fat!! Keep in mind as women our bodies deal with hormone changes, water weight, monthly cycles etc, etc.

Thank for your replies everyone :-)
I have read a little about muscle loss / tone, in which I read it's possible to be larger in size but not necessarly lose weight...
    Interesting stuff!

    Thanks again

  • Trust your scales. Even if they aren't totally perfect, they are yours, and are consistent. So even if they weight you at a whole stone less than you are, it doesn't matter, cos they always weigh you at a stone less than you are. does that make sense? NEVER go by ANY scales other than the ones you regularly use. Even if the actual numbers are out, you have still ONLY gained a pound, I promise :)xxxx

it could be that you're a bit bloated if you're eating more 'bad' processed things and more carbs? So its not proper weight, just water.

Also, always stick to 1 scale, cos they are all different!!

    Hey iwillsoonbeslim :-)

    You make total sense!!
I do go by my usual scales yeah - they're the ones I trust as like you said, if I am a stone less I would always be...
I was just curious.. That'll teach me!!

    Thanks for the reply :-)
