Yesterday a colleague claimed that the fog only went up to ~800m of elevation. I had to see that for myself, so I drove over to the mountains for a short run after work. It turned out he was right - above ~760m, I could suddenly see the sky! Night sky in the mountains is always so beautiful, it's like suddenly there are a million more stars than in the city.
Other lessons learned yesterday:
- a knuckle light and a small LED waist light are not enough on trails at night if there's no light pollution from nearby cities; even with the phone flashlight on top I had to be really careful
- I was slacking on hill running recently. It's been weeks since I ran any route with more than 10% elevation; when I got to more than 15% I had to alternate with walking, and the 27% slope all but killed me even at a fast walk.
Looks like I need to look into some better light source so that I can keep hitting the "fun" trails occasionally in winter. It's really too bad I don't like headlamps (as in, the couple of times I tried running with one, the way the light cone was bouncing around made me sick). Any other ideas what to use?

@ddmom0811 I wouldn't call 5:45 sleeping in! My alarm usually rings at 7:30 - last week I had to get up at 4:30 once to catch a train, and I was a zombie in the evening.
Those noxgear lights look great! I'm with you on the batteries though - all battery-powered stuff usually fails me in the middle of a run, and of course I never take spare batteries. I've got a few rechargeable lights for my bike and now also one for running; I just charge them every weekend (or with the bike lights, just plug in the USB cable at the office during the day). Still tempted to buy the noxgear. But I couldn't find on their website what kind of battery it uses and if you can exchange it easily - if the battery lasts "up to 40 hours", that would be a little more than six weeks if I use it for cycling and running...
@bmelb1 That weather sounds scary. Kudos for running in that cold and wind!

Four weeks out from the marathon is probably better than doing it two weeks out, when you should already be tapering. I don't know how much you've been running in the past weeks and if you need this week to be a cutback week with 10 miles.
But I only ran my first marathon this year, so I'm not really an expert... I did 32km (20mi) runs both four weeks and three weeks out, and only 24km (15mi) two weeks out. Although the 24km run was with 960m (3150ft) of elevation, I guess that also wasn't strictly in the spirit of tapering, and I still think I got enough rest and recovery before the marathon.
@HonuNui Your photos are always great! Snorkelling must be really awesome, sorry that the conditions only allowed for a short swim this time.

Elise nailed it. @RunsOnEspresso can you do a longer run on Dec 23 or 25? If you could do a 15 miles on the 23rd and a 10 on the 24th, your 10 mile run would be on tired legs which would have a similar effect of a single 20 mile run. Otherwise don't sweat it. I've seen some marathon plans that just go out to 16 miles for a long run on the theory that anything longer doesn't really provide enough benefit to warrant the extra wear and tear. I would not do the 20 miler just 2 weeks before the race.
I get in late on the 22nd & then have to drive 2.5-3 hours so I was planning to sleep in on the 23rd LOL I could probably do the split on 23 & 24. 25th is hard because we do all Xmas stuff in the AM.That is why I hate the way these plans are set up. It's for situations exactly like this:

All good points. I am sure I am overthinking this. I have only used a plan for my first half, the rest I kind of pulled from several ideas/plans and did my own thing. I just get extremely anxious about new distances and sometimes for distances I know I can run. It started kicking in when I start doing 10 milers. I know I can do 10 miles but I get anxious and think I can't. Me and running are basically a mental battle.1 -

I probably could do it this weekend. I did 18 last week. But I haven't mentally prepared myself this week for 20, I was looking forward to my cut back! LOL1 -
I just found a rechargeable LED safety vest: this.
Does anyone know this particular one? It doesn't look as cool as the noxgear, but I'm thinking about giving it a try - it's quite a bit cheaper, and I like the idea of recharging it via USB.0 -

I've heard of some trail runners taking headlamps and adapting them to wear around their waist. I've got an extra headlamp I want to try this with when I get a chance.

Another rest day, but with another marathon scheduled now in just months, it's going to be hard to hold back and slowly get back into it. But I know by how my body is still feeling to take it easy. Maybe another short run tomorrow.2 -
Got a little 3 mile run - nothing hurt! But probably should still take it easy on the shin and knee. Knee still hurts to put my sock on that foot. I may hop on the hotel treadmill Monday. Just a few miles here and there "as tolerated" and then really get back into it Jan 1.3

Today's notes – Got four inches of snow in the driveway over night. This is a lot less annoying now that I'm retired than it would have been if I'd had to clear the driveway in time to be to work at 8. I thought to take a picture at 10, and again when I finished at 10:30:
Got out to run about 2 PM. Cloudy, but otherwise better weather than yesterday at 23º F (-5º C) with 13 mph WSW wind. Today I knew to avoid the RIT campus, and just ran some familiar streets. I was a little surprised that the shoulders were in better shape today than yesterday even with the additional snow. Say what you want about inefficient New York governments, but they don't slack on the snow removal here.
The idea was to take it easy, but I kept having to slow myself down. Apparently I unconsciously run faster to generate warmth when it's cold out. Ended up with mile splits ranging from 7:36 to 7:59; but only 1:20 of HR above Zone 2. *shrug* The forecast for gun time tomorrow is similar temperature, but possible snow showers. It was good to get used to running in the Peregrines, and it was good to see that the diaper pin fixed the problem of the hood blowing off. To be fair, there was not that much distance where the gentler wind today even acted like it was trying to blow my hood off.
I'm feeling like 40 miles a week would be pretty comfortable about now. This is progress.

But.... It's been 11 years since my last ride! You think I'll still be able to cycle? My plan is to come home, lock in my garage and try it first without locking shoes, then try the locking mechanism, then go out and hope really hope I won't fall down in front of people
Looks nice! You can do it! The falling will happen when you first start out with the locking shoes. At least it has with everyone I know. It usually happens when you are stopping, starting or just standing waiting to go. That's because it is just hard to get used to unclipping them. After a few weeks, you don't even think about it. Hopefully you are in a bike-friendly city.

I planned to go to my run group workout last night at 6:30, even though it had been snowing most of the day. But I got out of work late and it was near white-out conditions and a traffic snarl all the way home (and to pick up Stella from doggy daycare) and I didn't even make it home until well after that. I figured no one would have shown anyway, but sure enough they posted on facebook as a small but hardy group.
The workout was posted as a 25 minute tempo (plus warmup and cooldown), so I did it on the treadmill at the Y this morning. I think it beat the below zero windchills by a lot. I listened to and almost finished my audiobook so I was fairly entertained. I think I didn't push as hard as I could have with the tempo because of listening to the book though.
Tomorrow morning is long run. Forecast says 24 F and snow at that time, which beats the freezing rain later in the day. I'm glad I got my groceries today so I can stay in after my run! Oh, besides having to take Stella out for a long walk.2 -

Yes, I'm probably running too much in the next few days - trying to get to my goal so anything I can manage in Japan is gravy. The plan right now is to fit in a Half tomorrow, and at least a 10+ next Saturday, and a mildly aggressive schedule next week. We'll see. I'm actually okay with not making my goal this month, simply because I know I'm losing a week of running while I'm travelling, but I know I'll be doing a TON of walking.
My next big race is 14-Jan, the Museum Half, and I feel MUCH more prepared for that this time (because I've done a half - at least, distance-wise - every month for the last 3-4 months. I have a goal in mind of 2:20. But I'm really not that stressed about it. I know what I need to do to get that, and if it doesn't happen in January, or even in March, it'll happen one of these days. Running, for me, is not a goal - it's a journey towards a fitter me, and I'm already a hell of a lot more fit than I used to be.
In other news - it looks like we're on the downhill slope of getting the settlement finished from my accident (me vs. SUV in 2015). The first company has paid their limits, and the second company has sent their release so they can pay out their limits. Now it's just down to my UIM coverage, and I'm meeting with an adjuster Monday, so maybe it won't take forever and I can put it behind me. Just in time to have a comfortable cushion so I can spend pretty much whatever I want in Japan!

BTW on the Noxgear. You might want to know that my son took to calling it "Stinkerbell" after a while. At first it was Tinkerbell, as you might expect, but after a month or so of summer running, and not figuring out a way to wash it, other than let it hang in the sunshine, he claimed it was pretty smelly.

Last night's run was SO COLD; only 4 group runners came out for the Thursday run. It was 18F with a "feels like" of 5F. And then I did 6 today because it's going to be snowing tomorrow morning, and I didn't feel like running 12 miles on snow-turning-to-rain, so I added 4 miles to my plan tonight (did 2 treadmill miles, then lifted, then did 4 more miles on the 'mill). Now I can cut my run to 8 miles tomorrow. Winter has come to NJ too quickly!

Garmin seems to be giving me a lot less calories for steps than Fitbit did, and Fitbit was very accurate since I ate those calories back.
Anyone know what activity level Garmin is supposed to be set to if you're sending steps calories to MFP?0 -

I have been running out side in the cold weather long enough that it didn't feel cold tonight. -31C air temp and -37C windchill and I was very comfortable. Wore my lighter Saucony Peregrine trail shoes as the Mizuno Wave Ascends are a little heavier and get a little stiffer in the cold temps. 2 Layers Top, 2 Layers Bottom Plus Gore Tex Wind Breaker Coat and Pants.
6 Km along the River Bank Trails, Lots of Christmas Decorations and Christmas Lights on at all the houses along the trails. Between the Christmas Lights, Full Moon and Wispy Fog rising off the River ( as the Ice Flows start to build on the river ) it was quite a beautiful night. Usually by this time of year the River is a solid block of ice. An old tradition as part of the New Years Resolution Run is to run across the river on the Ice following a snowmobile track - not going to happen this year as there is no way the Ice will be safe enough this year.
There are 3 car Ferry's crossing the river that are pulled out at the first sign of Ice and within 3-4 weeks are usually replaced with Ice Bridges. With the mild temperatures we have had (until the last 2 weeks) they may not get the Ice Bridges Built this year.

I've been getting random ones that last 10-15 seconds. Not every night, but a couple times per week. You're not alone.
Taking magnesium pills has helped my husband's cramps and also gotten rid of his horrible headaches. He struggles with dehydration and his electrolytes being out of whack due to Crohn's. But maybe just drinking some electrolytes would help with milder/less frequent cramping.
I have suffered with terrible cramps in my feet and legs pretty much all my life (at night having to jump out of bed... in school requiring a note to allow me to get up in class, etc..). My daughter recently recommended I try a magnesium supplement and it has really helped. I rarely get them now and when I do the are not nearly as bad and they subside quickly.
