Super excited, will also buy clothes on Friday, I don't think I can recycle running clothes right?
But.... It's been 11 years since my last ride! You think I'll still be able to cycle? My plan is to come home, lock in my garage and try it first without locking shoes, then try the locking mechanism, then go out and hope really hope I won't fall down in front of people
Looks nice! You can do it! The falling will happen when you first start out with the locking shoes. At least it has with everyone I know. It usually happens when you are stopping, starting or just standing waiting to go. That's because it is just hard to get used to unclipping them. After a few weeks, you don't even think about it. Hopefully you are in a bike-friendly city.
Enjoy!
@patrikc333 I be fallen several times on my bike. It's always in front of people. Just try to fall in the grass and not hurt your bike!0 -

GROSS, GROSS, I HATE WINTER, GROSS <<< How I felt about today's run
21F to start, 28F to finish, not much wind at all, but running on snow (or plowed, churned-up slush) while your face is being pelted by freezing rain? Not a fun way to start the day. My running group was split into two camps: the "Isn't this fun? " camp and the "I hate this, why are we out here?" camp (I was in the latter). We were all covered in a coating of ice when we were done, with frozen rain stuck to our eyelashes and hair. The picture below encapsulates my attitude about this whole thing:
Winter/Spring 2017 Races:
1/8/17: NYCRUNS Cocoa Classic 10 mile
2/18/17: FebApple Frozen 50 - 10 mile option
3/12/17: E. Murray Todd HM

3/26/17: Philly Love Run HM
4/1/17: NJ Ultra Fest HM (trail, maybe)

Yeah, some unpleasant winter running here this morning too. Trudging through the snow was HARD. I tried out my new Saucony Ride with GoreTex shoes and they worked well. My toes did get a bit wet and cold by the very end but it was much improved over regular shoes.
Managed to get 90 minutes in and now I can have pizza!
Here's a shot of some of us in the pelting icy snow. I'm the foreground on the left, taking the selfie with a couple of my Y running buddies in their flourescents following.

So, I had my HM this morning and absolutely smashed it! My previous PB was 2:02:53 and all I wanted was to squeak under 2 hours, but I managed 1:56:20 Absolutely over the moon with more than 6 minutes off my PB in 3 months.
It was a 1-mile course that we ran 13 times, although we did the .1 at the beginning to make up the distance, rather than at the end. I actually preferred that, because it meant that I was just counting down miles when looking at the clock, rather than having to work out how my finishing time would work out with the .1 at the end. I was dreading the monotony of doing laps, but actually it took so much concentration to keep count of your laps that it wasn't actually boring. It was quite undulating too, so knowing where the slopes and downhills were coming really helped to keep the pace steady on average.
My watch was all over the place with telling me my pace though, it kept jumping from 6 min/miles to 10/min miles, so by the second mile I had decided to ignore it. There was a clock at the mile marker, and so each time I just added 9 for a 9 min/mile and aimed to get there just before that time. It was hard to ignore everyone else and keep an even pace, as they staggered lots of other races in (a 10 mile, 10k and 5k) so there were lots of different paces running around, whereas normally by the middle of a race you're all grouped and plodding along with the same pace.
I had absolutely no problems with little niggles or anything on the run, which is the first time, so I'm really glad about that. The only random problem I had was at the beginning of the 12th mile, when I had suddenly worked out the time I was probably going to finish in and almost burst into tears. I tried to stop, but ended up feeling my throat close and the beginnings of a panic attack. I clearly got too overwhelmed! It didn't take me longer than 10 seconds to switch my brain off, I have a few good strategies for stopping that happening after it happened all the time 18 months ago, but it was still a bit random. Then I did burst into tears at the end, which seemed silly with a snow machine and a dancing reindeer there to greet me It was just nice to finally smash a goal.
They also played a lot of Christmas music most of the way round, so all in all you didn't even notice it was a boring lapped race on a grey, miserable day. Weather was perfect though really, about 5C (41F)
All in all, a really great race! Off to find my race photos now, which are all being posted for free on Facebook, rather than being charged for them

How do you guys can run with such awful weather??0
-
@louubelle16 awesome job! You smashed your PR! Really great run, just amazing.0
-
@kristinegift, @MNLittleFinn , @katharmonic & other winter runners I forgot.. oh my gosh. Can't imagine running in those temps! Although I guess I better start imagining it since I'm headed to NYC the end of the month.
@louubelle16 -- amazing time!!! Congrats! I've not heard of a HM where you run around the same 1 mile 13 times! Sounds ... I don't know ... strange. But it worked for you!!!
@orphia - my Garmin Fenix is SO stingy with calories. I never looked at my FB calories, but I used Strava and Endomondo and all 3 of them give different burns. Endomondo is the most generous, followed by Strava and last Garmin. It adjusted my heart rates for me and I think they are not in the right zones, so I need to look at it one day.
Today was a 44 mile bike ride followed by a 1 mile run for streak. That mile was the hardest one I've done for the streak, because unlike you all in the cold, it is HOT down here today. Tomorrow is supposed to be worse!
12/1 - 3.2 miles
12/2 - 1.5 miles
12/3 - 45 miles biking + 1 mile run

Holy cow! Temps back up in the mid 70s this morning with about 90% humidity. I don't know how I am going to manage this when summer rolls around, but one thing at a time. Forecast for tomorrow is back down into the 40s so too much heat isn't anything to worry about yet. Other than the warm weather, it was an uneventful short run this morning. I am always so tight after a rest day. It seems to take me a day or two to get back into it when I take a day off. We are shooting for a long run tomorrow, but we will see how it goes. I am not really putting pressure on, but I am going to set my watch to monitor pace rather than distance and try to keep it slow and easy and see how far we get. I'll be pleased with any distance over 5 miles or so.
@louubelle16 Congrats on your HM! Nice going!
Have a fabulous rest of the day everyone!

They are Ice Beasts. Just a little bit crazier from the rest of us, er them.. or they are running junkies!7 -

@louubelle16 - congrats on what sounds like a great run, and fantastic PB.
Thanks also for the detail about the event - been debating between this event and the Windsor HM for my first HM race so good to have the info. May go for dedicated HM race for now until I'm more practiced in race environments, as suspect my pace would be all over the shop with all those different runners and races going on! Well done keeping your focus with all that going on.1 -
3 Ladies and one Guerilla (me) were the only runners out this morning for what is traditionally Long Run Day - all the others stayed Home " to cold they said ". We said WUS'es . Of course being Smart Runners we did modify our plan to a shorty 3km - 19 mins of hiding from the wind in the trees.
The ambient temperature is a balmy -22C but with the Warm Pacific air heading our way it meant a nasty West wind - so the wind chill factor was -42C. Last night was -31C and wind chill was at -37C. So even though the ambient temperature was higher the net effect was for a very miserable morning. Actually have a 2nd afternoon run planned for 10km ( when it's warmer ) but just had to get out so we could " Hassle our club members "
@kristinegift LOL at your "GROSS, GROSS, I HATE WINTER, GROSS <<< How I felt about today's run" But you got it done!!! Nice Car!!! I can see the Frozen Ice Drops on the windows - Nasty stuff to run in.
@MNLittleFinn Nicely done - No frost bite - no lashiciles so its all good. That's called practise for the Arctic HM.
@katharmonic Great Photo
Winter Warriors all of you.^^^^^
@louubelle16 Busting a PB . Never ran on a Course with such a short 1 mile loop. We have a Hypothermic HM we do where it is modified Figure 8 with a 6.55km loop, but at 5km you run past the start/finish area for a small 0.775km loop that brings you back past the start/finish area. The first time around the Figure 8 loop isn't bad but the 2nd time around when you pass the start finish is just brutal as all you want to do is turn in and run across the timing mats.
@NikolaosKey How do we run in such cold weather. Like anything in life a little Planning-Preparation goes a long way to making it enjoyable-survival able, or as it has been said " Embrace the Suck" . Really it is all about layering the appropriate Clothes, Socks, Gloves/Mitts(shoes) and a good run plan so you minimize you exposure to the head winds. A cross wind is still tough but so much easier than a headwind. A tail wind on the home ward leg is the best plan.
@Elise4270 Yes we are all Beast's and Junkies. I think running in Heat is harder than running in the cold. But I may be biased. Tomorrow is the Jingle Jog - Santa's Anonymous and Food Bank donations.3 -
@juliet3455 Nice job getting out there and getting it done! About lachiciles, I was wipiing them off as I ran, I even had a nosecile at one point, but it was nasty! Picture was after I was inside for a couple minutes, had to fins my phone. It was a good run. Yours just sounded nasty, great job getting out there and running in those conditions.0
-
@louubelle16 - amazing job! Way to go! I also can't imagine running that loop over and over, but it obviously worked for you. Impressive!
@juliet3455 great job to you to in the extreme cold. -42F wind chill, I can't imagine. We were struggling with our head wind and it was only a +9F wind chill. I was so relieved to turn around for the way back. I agree that it's mostly about preparation and layering. And that I do better with this than the extreme heat.
I took Stella out for a hike after I got warmed up again and conditions were much nicer. I really wished I had XC skis because the trail by my house was perfect for it. Next week I have my first XC ski experience/lesson so maybe I will end up buying some very soon!

@louubelle16 Fantastic job on smashing that HM PR!!!
--
Today's early AM run was a lot warmer...in the 50s, making for a really nice fast-paced run. Tomorrow is supposed to be down in the low single digits with the wind chill, and unlike everyone one else here (seemingly), I'm a complete and total wuss when it comes to the cold, so there'll be no more running this weekend from me; time to schedule some weight work instead!

I would say that's a good idea. It was my 6th HM and I still found it quite challenging with all the other runners around doing different things, having to remember to count your laps etc. It was a great race, and so much Christmassy fun, but not an ideal first HM. There are some great ones in the South East though, so I'm sure you'll find one you like.1 -
Since a few people are wondering how some of us crazy people run in the cold I thought I'd post a pic of all the clothes I wore for my run Thursday when it was -23*C and 34 km/hr winds:
Feet - Asics Gel Cumulus 18 GTX running shoes, WrightSock Thermastat Crew 576 lined socks, feet were toasty warm, the socks are warm and no thicker than a regular pair of running socks so they're very comfortable.
Legs - Sugoi fleece lined running tights, UnderArmour Cold Gear pants, the tights are so soft and comfy but around 0*C I need to add an extra layer if it's windy out. The UnderArmour pants are pretty good as an outer layer, but I'm thinking of trying gore-tex pants for really windy days.
Upper body - Asics moisture wicking short sleeve t-shirt, Puma long sleeved mock neck half zip shirt, UnderArmour Cold Gear fleece zip hoodie, UnderArmour windbreaker. I like the zippers in the shirts so I can unzip a few layers if I get overheated when the wind is at my back but keep the windbreaker closed so that my skin isn't directly exposed to the cold. I also like wearing something with a hood in case I find I need an extra layer on my neck or head while I'm out.
Head - Trailheads fleece lined headband, Trailheads fleece balaclava, Trailheads fleece baseball cap with ear flaps, I find the Trailheads fleece is nice in the cold, but it doesn't break the wind very well so I've ordered a couple of Buffs to try and see how they are in high winds. I like to wear a baseball cap when I run to protect my glasses if it's raining or snowing, and because I'm so pale that my face freckles and burns even on a sunny day in the winter!
Hands - Sugoi running gloves, Sugoi Shell mitts, hands were toasty warm which is saying a lot since I have arthritis in my fingers and they are so sensitive to the cold that I wear leather gloves in the spring and fall weather to keep them warm.
Since I was running during the day I didn't worry about wearing reflective gear, I stand out enough against all the snow wearing black!
I'm still learning what works best in this weather so I would love to know how some of the others in the colder weather layer up...7 -

01/12 3.12 miles
02/12 3 miles
03/12 3 miles
13/12 3 miles
14/12 3 miles - there was a full moon tonight, it was lovely
16/12 3.25 miles
17/12 3 miles - very dark tonight and met 8 cars. I have to stop and step to the side as the road is quite narrow and the car lights put me off balance when passing.
Must go back a few pages and catch up on all the posts.

Went to REI to look at trail running packs. Sales person had a genius idea about my bounce issue... look in the cycling section! I looked at and tried on several packs. Settled with the Osprey Raptor 14. Going to swap out the hydration bladder for the Camelback I already have with an insulated tube / bite valve. I won't take it out tomorrow in -20 to -30 F wind chills, though.
In fact, I am falling behind goal too much due to the cold and darkness. I need to get and punch pass for my local fitness center so I can use it on days when I have the need to run, but don't want to deal with darkness or temps. I had better do that tomorrow and get some miles in.1 -
Just managed to pop out at 9:30pm in 50m visibility due to heavy fog which was interesting! Had my high vis cycling jacket on so I felt safe enough from cars etc - more worrying was at times I could hardly see my feet let alone the surface in front of me. Did a short loop around my local shops (i.e. the best lit place near my house!) which equated to 2.37km. Whilst I had given up on my streak earlier in the day, opportunity arose and whilst I was thinking about early night I knew it'd probably backfire as I'd lie in bed thinking that I should have gone for a run, so decided to go for it!
Good news is streak is still on and at moment have no reason why I can't at least get to Dec 30th, (when I have the same problem as I thought I'd have today in that my 3yo and I may be alone all day).

This morning a shorty 3km - 19 mins of hiding from the wind in the trees.
The ambient temp was a balmy -22C but with a nasty West wind 25km/h so the wind chill factor was -42C.

Second run as planned for 9km to give me 11 km for the day.

Someone stop me. I've run 12 days in a row. I'm not supposed to be on a streak till December 25!
But today just felt like a long run day. I ran with a friend, on a route I hadn't run before, and it was a beautiful morning for it. It was awesome.

@louubelle - congratulations on your HM PB!! That is an awesome time!
I am at the hotel for my half tomorrow and it is going to be cold here (for us) at the start. Weather is saying low 30s and they were handing out gloves for free at the packet pickup. I know this can't compare to what so many of you are experiencing but for those of us not used to it, it will be cold! I am also hoping to meet up with @mom3over40 and her husband at the start!2
