how is Texas not southern?
I'm from WV which is technically southern, though we seceded from VA because of the Civil War and wanting to be a member of the Union... so... I don't know about us. I wouldn't consider myself southern, but I know plenty of people in this state who would.
I'm not sure what I am trying to say.5 -

Just because it lands south on the map, dont make it Dixie.

People seem to think Southern is like southeast (Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, etc)0 -

I get that.
I always used the Civil War as the definer, and if a state was part of the Confederacy, then, to me, it is considered southern. I can kind of see it as being "southwest" from a regional standpoint. but at the same time, it has south in the name.0 -
South Carolina!0

Being from Houston, I think of anywhere that it snows as 'the North.'3

Another Texan here...although I'm also British, so I kind of have no idea where I get to stand in this particular thread.2

Texans don't consider themselves Southern; they consider themselves Texans.1 -

I'm from the very Northeast corner of Texas, right on the tri-state line. Back in the days of the railroad Northeast TX was called "The Gateway to the West", but the Western state label always seems to start with New Mexico. Maybe that is why Texas is just Texas who knows? I can see Arkansas from my back yard, and being a state line city most of the identity of the town is Arkansan, woo pig sooie and all that stuff. You really have to get 100 miles west before you lose that image. We have pecans, so Texas is southern (in the Dixie sense). We have avocados, citrus and desert so Texas is western too.0

Parts of Texas are culturally Southern and parts are culturally Northern. I'm in and of the culturally Southern part.0

Once on glocktalk a discussion was speculating on Texas seceding from the Union. Individuals from all across the country were certain that if Texas did secede, their states would join Texas in abandoning the East and West coasts. I recall we were also able to get assurances from half of Canada, also.1
