I was just wondering....if anyone else was taking thyroid medicine and having rapid weight loss as well.

I'm actually kind of surprised at the amount of weight loss I have been having (32 lbs in 2 months time) and can't help but wonder if I should see my Dr. and maybe go off the meds if my diet is helping my condition.

I do watch everything I eat and try to get to the gym at least 5 days a week but I am still taking my medication. So if anyone else has been having the same experiences....please reply.
Thanks

  • i am, mine isnt as rapid as yours but since 5/31 so 6 weeks ago i have lost 16 lbs which is an average of close to 3lb a week. Mine could be because of having a baby but i do know when they checked my thyroid it was actually working better so they had to lower my dose. I dont know if i need a lower dose because of it elevating during pregnancy and going down more afterwords (because that can happen) or if being active and everything affects it. I would get your blood drawn and just see if its changed

Did you just start taking thyroid medication? When I first started I had rapid weight loss. The thyroid's function is to regulate metabolism. Do not stop taking it or cut back yourself. If you are worried you should see your doctor and have a thyroid panel checked. Even after being on it you will need periodic checks to make sure you are taking the correct amount. When I first started mine, my doctor check my TSH, T3, T4, free T4 every few months, now he just checks it every 6 months or if I'm feeling bad-feeling cold in the middle of summer, tired even after sleeping well, feeling like I can't get enough rest...
Hope that helped. Keep up the good work!

I wish!!!!!!!!! Had my thyroid out in December and losing weight is very very hard. Only have to look at food and put weight on! Doesn't matter how little eat, whether eat exercise cals or not or what kind of diet. Metabolism non existent!. Haven't posted any weight loss for weeks and not through trying.

My aunt has experienced similar rapid weight loss since going on her thyroid medication a few months ago. She goes to the gym most days and watches what she eats just like you and she lost a large amount of weight in the first few months and now that she has less to lose (is closer to her goal), the weight loss has slowed down. I think it partly depends on how much weight you have to lose total.

What I'm wondering is - since you weigh almost exactly what I weigh and I'm struggling and not losing anything...how many calories a day are you consuming? I, too, am exercising at least 6 days a week -- walking, lifting weights, and playing tennis with some basketball and bicycling mixed in -- and I can't seem to lose anything although I'm exercising around 8 hours a week and watching what I eat very carefully.

What sort of calorie level is working for you?

    Hi,
I am on thyroid meds and I don't know if you would consider 19 lbs
since june 6th rapid or not, but that's what I have lost, and weigh in is tomorrow
so I'm hoping that number increases. My dose is 188, it was increased June 3rd.

I don't think you should be to alarmed at your weightloss, I'm sure your metabolism
just increased due to your thyroid fuctioning better, because when the thyroid is out of whack
everything else is too and it's next to impossible to lose weight!

Continued success to you with meeting all of your goals!

I am eating 1200 calories a day, and use my exercise calories as a cushion only. I don't usually eat back all of them.
My calorie burn when I do workout is usually around 400. Treadmill for 45-50 min at a 3.5 mph speed. (I can hit 3 miles in that time at this pace). I also do some strength training for my upper body.

I have been on this medication for about three and a half years.....so I guess I will have to check this out with my Dr. and get my levels tested again.

Not that I am unhappy with the loss, but I don't want to make myself unhealthy by not at least checking on it.
    Thanks for the replies
  • I have also had rapid weight loss. I had a total thyroidectomy in April of 2011 and have lost 45 lbs. Just remember to watch for signs and symptoms of hyperthroid because your dose is based on your weight. My physician added in Cytomel which is a T3 supplement to help me feel better after surgery. The MD cautioned me to make sure that I am eating a minimum of 1200 calories per day and taking a rest day with exercise. Congratulations on your weight loss!

Were you eating 1200 calories and exercising this much for a long time or have you just started that recently (when you started losing weight rapidly)?

I guess with hypothyroidism conventional wisdom doesn't mean much but generally speaking (aside from the hypothyroidism), someone of your weight and activity level should have a maintenance calorie level closer to 2100-2500 a day which means if you've been eating closer to 1200 a day rapid weight loss would definitely be expected. In fact, you could lose a pound every two or three days on average depending on how many calories you burned exercising along with your calorie deficit in your diet.

Since you've been on the medication for a long time, the sudden change in weight is curious. If you were always eating and exercising like this but just suddenly started losing weight then I would say that is very odd. If you just started losing weight rapidly when you started eating this low calorie level and exercising this much, then it would seem your metabolism may be working normally. If that is the case though, you may want to consider upping your calories a little to avoid slowing your metabolism in the future. From many books on diet and metabolism that I've read, they say you shouldn't go below your resting metabolic rate or you risk slowing down your metabolism. Your RMR is based on gender, age, weight and activity level so I can't quote it exactly but it is probably around 1800 calories a day for you. There are free online calculators for it if you are curious.
