Hello, my name's Lacy... So I've been diagnosed with severe acute pancreatitis recently and am on a very low fat diet restriction now. Sometimes have to be on a liquid diet and have lost 30 lbs. I'm 23 years old and don't drink. I have been mostly vegetarian and vegan for the last few years. Lots of fruits / veggies / beans / and grains. I've started incorporating fish and extra lean meats into my diet. Anyone else having similar issues?

I was hospitalised last week for acute pancreatitis. They took my gallbladder from me "just in case" that was the cause. I drink (drank) but not excessively. I was told to eat low fat/low sugar, I suppose forever but no one really said. But I'm skittish to test the waters. The pain was not cool and I'd rather never do that again!

I have a follow up today with my PCP so I will be asking lots of questions.

Any advice on diet? What are your favorites, go-to foods or snacks, do you eat out and how/what?

I have a digestive illness but not pancreatitis. I have Crohn's and have to eat low fiber.

Oh my gosh. This makes me want to scream. Acute pancreatitis is often caused by a gallstone that blocks the common bile duct but that doesn't mean it will happen again. If you did not sign a consent for this I would be all over that idiot. I have rarely heard of them taking a gallbladder "just in case." Grrrrr. Unfortunately, you will now have to eat low fat for life. Normally, pancreatitis itself does not require low fat for life.

I had severe pancreatitis in 2001. I nearly died from it. Mine was determined to be caused by a different reason then most. When they can't pin alcohol or gallstones they start looking for other causes. I have never had to eat low fat or change my diet long term because of it. It is unknown if I have actual damage to my pancreas because of the severity of it. They can't really measure that. For the first few weeks while I recovered I just basically took it easy, ate lightly so my gut could continue to heal, and got a lot of rest. After that, I never had to do anything different. The up front diet changes for the first few weeks are mostly to continue letting your pancreas heal completely. Sugars play a part in that since insulin is released from the pancreas. With no gallbladder, lower fat will play a part too. But if one still has their gallbladder, long term low fat is not required or necessary. Today I eat a high fat, lower carb diet (I stay lower carb b/c I choose to) and have never had issues with pancreatitis again. There is something called chronic pancreatitis - but it is not common and a person has to have it a certain number of times before they'll diagnose it as chronic.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!
