There's been a lot of people out in the world lamenting how terrible 2016 has been for them (war and crises, celebrity deaths...Trump) but I know 2016 has been my best year ever! I've lost over 135 lbs, and got my life/health together for the first time in a long time, and best of all I got engaged over Christmas week!
As we look forward to 2017 let's take a minute to share why 2016 was your best year ever!!

Awesome....
I've been at this good livin' thing for over four years...2016 was actually the worst from a fitness standpoint. I was injured while training for a time trial series in mid July...I completed one race in the series despite a herniated disk and pinched nerve in my c6/7 which left my left arm and hand mostly numb...I was in a lot of pain to boot.
I wasn't able to complete the other races in the series as I was instructed to back off from my physical therapist who I spent 8 weeks with 2x per week. Literally the day after my PT cleared me to resume riding (easy riding) and light work in the weight room, I jacked my foot...crutches for a short time and then a cane. It would start feeling better and I'd push it and re-injure...basically, I didn't feel particularly good until right around Thanksgiving. I also re-tweaked my neck/back in October doing a ride I probably shouldn't have been doing.
For the last month or so I've been doing some light work on the bike and the weight room just to make sure I'm healed...I'm very much looking forward to 2017 and getting back into action. I have a couple of bucket list rides on the horizon that I'm pretty excited about...just need to start getting those miles in again.
So, I guess I'd be in the good riddance to 2016 camp...just for different reasons.3 -
contratulations on you weigjt loss and your enagement. cwolfman I hope 2017 is better for you.
we had a lot of emergencies in 2016 but I still think it was a great year. things could jave been worse....focus on tje positives. I took control over my health in may and have had a great healthy journey so far. Have lost 60 pounds and have gained so much strength in many ways. Not quite halfway there but I will get there...bring on 2017!

Well, December was a great month for me because that's when I decided to finally get up off the couch, get back in shape, and lose the extra poundage that I'd accumulated over the past 4-5 years. However, the rest of my year was shite for all the reasons you listed (and then some). Here's hoping for a better 2017!3

Actually 2016 was most likely the worst year of my life...
Buh bye 2016!!!2 -

We finalized the adoption of our daughter and celebrated the completion of our family. This year is going down as one of the best for my family and me. I am excited to see what 2017 has in store for us!21

2016 was the year I really committed to a healthy LIFESTYLE. Not just working out and trying different diets to lose 5-10 lbs then stopping. I really took the time to get to know myself and be patient with the process. No more fast fixes. If I didn't lose weight for a week or 3 I just kept on going. Eventually I'd see results whether it was in lbs, inches or mastering a new exercise. I was kind to myself and if I slipped up I let it go and moved on. If I had to offer advice to someone getting started in 2016: it would be all this. Be kind to yourself, be patient and trust in the process. Don't rush your personal perfection.9

Yeah, 2016 was amazing for me:
I am ending this year 2.8 lbs away from my initial goal weight, after losing over 100 lbs total. A new body, new life, new possibilities ...
And also a real absolute miracle for me: I am back to being a college English professor, something I just thought would be impossible to do again.
I'm grateful everyday for what's happened.14 -
I'm not going to miss 2016 at all, it was horrible, but that's not what this thread is about.
I no particular order:
I'm still alive
My wife and family are alive and well
We're sheltered and fed
We have jobs
My eyesight is good
I have functioning arms, legs, feet and hands
My wife is still after many years, my soulmate and best friend
My grandson is healthy and happy
There's so much more that I could add to this list.
Yeah, maybe 2016 wasn't so bad after all.
Thanks OP - Cheers, I needed that.13 -
Well I got married this year and finally started my way to being healthy with losing over 30 pounds so far. I still have a long ways to go but it's been a great year for me! And my sister had her baby so I became an aunt!8

My brother and his wife brought their daughter home from China in June. Lily has been such a blessing to us all. I'm thrilled to be an uncle to this little girl who was once abandoned half a world away! Congrats to your family! Adoption is awesome!8 -
Today marks 365 consecutive days of getting 10,000 or more steps. As a result of moving more, eating better and drinking less, I'm down 65 pounds and have maintained since September. My new goals include strength, flexibility and perhaps another 10 pounds. Cheers.11

We moved to a very beautiful part of the USA. Definitely not the worst year I've had personally, but could have been better. Though, I'll have to kick these bad habits out of the way that I picked up in 2016.3

2016 was awful and then horrid and then finally just plain vile. BUT I'm glad you had an amazing year. That is AWESOME! Congrats! Some friends of the family won something like $280 million dollars in the lottery and my best friend sold his startup and can now retire in his early 30's so it was clearly a good year for some. I figure it's my turn in 2017!3 -
I beat cancer this year, so yeah this was a pretty good year.21

60.3 pounds down this year, graduated college and got a great position in the profession!! What a year!

I found my career, in which I've been employed for seven months. Before this I just held "jobs," and wanted more... I've found exactly where I want to be!11

2016 was wonderful!
Through MFP I have gotten my lifetime of emotional eating almost completely under control and lost 45 lbs!
My next/final? goal is to get to 145 lbs in 2017 - I know I can do it with this marvelous community!
My son graduated from high school and has launched his engineering studies! My daughter is midway through finisher her grad year in high school and has her sights set on climate change studies at a great uni! Husband is healthy and happy! Oh, and... introduced my sister onto MFP last summer and she has also lost 45 lbs!!!
Life is good!
Thanks OP! - Great idea for a thread!!

2016 was my best year ever because I married a love of my life, and gave birth to a love of my life! I've grown immensely as a person as I figure out my new roles as a wife and mother.9

No year is only bad - Yes 2016 was not a year that on the bigger scale than just me that will go down in my books as a good year. However for me personally it was not a bad year.
Some highlights
- I decided to start a new post grad course, not only that I managed to convince my employer to pay for it. It may lead to a change of career, but most of all I just love learning/studying and it has given me so much already. A lot of it has to do with increased confidence due to my weightloss.
- For my best friends wedding I made my dress, my husbands waistcoat and his regency coat. All of them were at the top end of my sewing skill set and they all came out great. Lots of compliments.
- I joined a gym and took up serious weight training. Loving it.
- I did my first run of over 1kmwithout stopping Given my asthma that is a major for me4 -
2016 was one of the best years of my life. I got into good standing at my University (finally off academic probation after years of slacking), all A's and B's the last three semesters. I finished writing my 10th novel, and the best part of the entire year (and my life!) was welcoming our beautiful baby boy into our lives on July 23. It took me four years to get pregnant and he's beyond anything we could have hoped for7

I have 105 reasons why it was great4

2016 had its ups and downs but that's called life. But for me it was pretty darned fabulous as I became a grandma for the first time! On November 23rd we welcomed our grandson into the world and that far outweighed the missed fitness goals (correction...completely neglected fitness goals), the looooong hours at work for 6 months due to a new software conversion and all the other little things that seem to throw a person a curve ball once in a while.
I in no way mean to make light of things that have happened in other's lives because there are many that have suffered terrible losses, injuries or other setbacks. Those things make it hard to find any joy in life. But for myself I try to stay positive and believe that every day I wake up is a good day. It may be a sad day, a stressful day or a frustrating day but it's still another day that I have.4 -
It was a good year overall! I lost 40 lbs, am fit as ever, two of my children become engaged to wonderful life partners, and my husband had a huge success at work (my work is going well, too). I am so excited for 2017! We have two weddings coming and who knows what else! Blessings to all of you!2

OP congrats on the weight loss and the new additions to your family. 2016 was my best year ever because I continued my weightloss/fitness journey and lost an additional 51.5lbs for a total of 132.5lbs. My doctor took me off all medications, HBP, High Cholesterol, and Diabetes. I ran my first officially timed 5k. I joined a fabulous gym and signed up with a personal trainer and met some wonderful health and fitness minded people. They offer awesome encouragement and support. I reached my goal size...size 8 but not my goal weight...but that is ok only 8 or 9lbs to go. Looking forward to 2017. Hoping to lose those last few lbs and take my fitness journey to a whole new level.4

I posted this in a different thread...
My very first weigh-in of 2016 and my very last weigh-in of 2016 were EXACTLY the same...179.8. But that isn't bothering me one bit! I've gone down a pants size. I went from not being able to do one pull-up to able to do five in a row (2017 goal is ten in a row). I deadlifted 315 pounds (2017 goal is 350). I was able to put big girl plates on the bench and bench it, and then I maxed out even more than that, 160 pounds.
2016 was AWESOME!!! But the scale doesn't show it. This is why we celebrate our NSVs!!!2 -
Congrats! And yes despite it all it was the best year for me yet!!0
