What is your Pre-Workout routine?

What is your Pre-Workout routine? Sometimes I find it hard to get going and unsure if I should eat or drink too much before I workout. (If I drink too much water I jiggle all work out) Do you have a routine ? What works for you? Any Pre/Post workout snacks?

If I have time (i.e. the weekend), I like to enjoy two cups of coffee beforehand. Otherwise, pretty much just force myself out of bed at 4am and get started.

I drink a protein shake during my 30 minute ride to the gym in the morning.
It's a pretty light shake, though. Just 8 oz of almond milk and 1 scoop of chocolate protein.

IMO, most important thing pre-workout is properly timing your last meal before working out so that the insulin spike and drop doesn't hit you right when youre fixing to workout. When your insulin drops, that's when you get that lazy, sluggish, "i don't want to be here right now and need a nap" feeling. What works for me is a real meal 2 or 3 hours before working out and 30/45 minutes pre-workout I eat a poptart and on the (7 minute) drive to the gym I drink 1 scoop of 1st phorm megawatt w/ 10 oz of water.

Play around and find out what works best for you! Hope this was somewhat of help!

I usually have a coffee and snack about an hour before. Then candy (dextrose) before, during and after.. then followed by lunch.

Food before (frequently right before), caffeine right before, candy during.

On weekdays, i get up at 3:15 am, brush my teeth, get dressed, and drive to the gym. On my way, i drink a protein shake and pre-workout drink. Nothing complicated or scientific, just get up and get it done.

I usually eat (I eat LCHF), then, lots of water (I notice a huge difference in my performance if I don't properly hydrate beforehand) and go.

Fasted early morning workout, usually with a BCAA + energy supplement beforehand. Then a whey protein powder afterwards, and a small brunch an hr or 2 later.

I get up, give the dogs a milkbone snack(because one might throw up otherwise), pee, put my hair up, get on a sports bra, get my water, put in my DVD, move the furniture and go! I have a shower and coffee after...

Eat a small meal 2 hours before, eat a snack 30 min before, drink water continuously through out the day before and during workout.

If I'm going for a run or a swim I roll out of bed and chug down some coffee before heading out the door. Going to the gym I'll have the aforesaid coffee and a banana and/or yogurt.

On Sundays when I typically do my longer runs after my 7AM pool session I'll usually have a bowl of oatmeal along with the requisite amount of coffee before going to the pool with a light snack while driving home & before running.

I generally work out first thing in the morning before breakfast, so pre-workout is either coffee or a pre-workout drink, sometimes both. If I drink just coffee, I'll drink some water as well.

I roll out of bed and lift or run. Black coffee for the drive and deal with all the food and drink nonsense when I get to the office.

I eat small meals throughout the day. The last being some fruit, normally some type of berry. It works for me. I do not like pre-workouts.

After my second or third coffee I look at the clock, realize it's getting late, groan and *kitten* at myself for awhile, then get on my workout clothes. Once I bother to get dressed there is no turning back and I get that workout done.

If I'm working out before 7am, I just have an espresso (on the nespresso machine) and maybe few bites of a banana, anything more than that is too much. If it's later than that, I'll have a bit of yogurt/gronola or small omelette. I try to eat that at least 1 hr before workout.

Typically walk my dog while drinking my amino energy (the dog's energy always helps a ton to get my day going), then have a yogurt and something small (apple/banana/almonds). Usually, depending what I'm doing, I'll wait maybe a half hour and head there.

I get up at 5:15 to do my workout. I set up my workout clothes on my nightstand the night before, which I find makes it easy to roll out of bed and throw them on... no need to fumble around in the dark and disturb my sleeping husband! Then I head downstairs, pee, drink some water and do my workout (using YouTube). Afterwards I shower and get ready for work before the kids wake up, and then make my protein smoothie at around 7 am.

When I lack motivation what gets me going is a shower. Yes, it sounds odd to shower first, but for some reason it changes my state. Like last night after dinner I wanted to practice yoga but had no motivation for it, so jumped in the shower and then just did it.

After yoga or lifting weights in my 64 degree gym I don't need to shower again afterwards, but I use gentle soap and have no issue with showering multiple times per day in the summer when I'm doing stuff outdoors that makes me sweat.

I'm a swimmer, and I really can't eat anything for a good 2 hours before I work out; but I usually plan for a high-protein snack after I finish.

So explain how people who work out fasted can still get a great workout in if that's your opinion?

Sunday AM: Coffee, fart around on the computer, go bench.

Weekdays after work: Eat a snack (usually just a protein bar) 30-45 minutes before going to the gym, go lift.

Either a medium sized meal ~40 minutes before or something like Clif bloks right before (if I didn't get a chance to eat earlier) - (so I'm not either starving or in need of a restroom during a run). (I run in the evening after work, before dancing).

I've done fasted early morning with only a cup of coffee before, and have switched to late afternoon to accommodate my wife and daughter joining me, which usually means I have lunch about 3 hours beforehand. The only real difference I've noticed is convenience.

I do keep a large bottle of water available during the workouts, and have a glass or two after, with dinner an hour or so after that.

The other important (to me) part of my routine that I never, ever skip is a good 5-10 minutes stretching and warming up first, and a 5 minute or so warm down after.

My advice OP, is to listen to what your body is telling you, and do what works best for you regarding food, supplements and drinks, and time of day. Find what works best and be consistent. Best of luck!
