Exhausted

I've been pretty consistent the past 7 weeks on starting up going to the gym again. I've been going 4x per week. I've. Prices thought that the past week or so I've been getting exhausted about half way. I take a break halfway and eat half a protein bar and the other half when I'm done, also resting about 15 min before I do my second half. Is the exhaustion just part of it or am I doing something wrong?

Any chance you could be anemic? I only ask because I had the same thing happen to me many years ago. I could barely get through my usual spin class workouts. And I would get more out of breath as well. After doing some lab work, my doctor found that my ferritin level (iron stores) were extremely low. Once the level came back up, my energy and endurance returned

What do you have before your workout. Also maybe just back off for a week the intensity

I haven't been tested. But I guess I'm supposed to be tired after the gym right?

A little tired is one thing - not being able to complete a workout without a snack is a different level. Are you eating before the gym? And if so, what? If not, maybe you should. What are you eating the rest of the day? Are you getting enough protein, etc? What are you doing at the gym and for how long? Sounds like you might not be getting enough to eat before the gym and then pushing yourself too hard once you're there.

I agree with the others that looking at what you're eating prior to working out is a great place to start. It could also be that you started too fast too quickly. How active (or not) were you prior to starting your workout routine seven weeks ago? And did you start slowly, gradually increasing the intensity of your workouts from week to week?

I currently have a bowl of cereal and a scoop of peanut butter before. I usually do the stationary bike for 30 min and some weights, take a break then treadmill for 30 min and then some more weights

Is this the workout you've always done? I'm exhausted just reading about it! You could try separating your cardio and weight days.
  • Vitamin D is another deficiency to have checked out. I recommend a physical and request a nutrient panel. That kind of tired is not normal.

I don't want everyone to think that I'm not capable of finishing my workout. I'm just tired halfway through most days. I don't know if I would go the I need testing done route but just want to know what you guys do so you don't feel sluggish before and during your workout. There are also times where I feel tired before so that could be a reason why in tired halfway through.

I think we all get tired halfway, that means we're doing it right.

I'm by no means an expert on the science behind this, but it could be going from an aerobic exercise to anaerobic to aerobic again. Your body is trying to catch up--that'd wear me out pretty last too. Try doing cardio days and then weight days, or doing weights before a longer cardio sesh.

How many calories are you eating?

How much are you looking to lose?

    What is your current weigh?

Are you eating backat least a portion of your exercise calories?

What does the weight routine comprise of?

What is your average protein, fats, and carb split?

Are you lethargic during the day and not as active, a bit more of a couch potato, as you were 7 weeks ago?

It really sounds like your daily food consumption is a little low and you are not fuelling your work outs.

    Cheers, h.

    That sounds quite doable.

Maybe, try something different for breakfast ... like boiled eggs on toast. I know, for me, cereals don't really do it.

And personally, I'd do 30 min on the stationary bike + 30 min on the treadmill ... and then I'd do weights. Or 30 min on the stat bike, then weights, then 30 min on the treadmill. And I'd go straight through with no break. Sometimes taking a break, depending on how long it is, can make you more tired.

Being a little sluggish and needing to stop for a snack and a rest are really not the same thing. However I will admit, if I lie down to do any exercise on the floor I have a hard time not taking a nap while I'm down. I have no shame.

Have you tried a cup of coffee, caffeine pill, of preworkout to give you an energy boost for your workout?

Your question typically hints at a person who is persistently under-eating for their activity level.

Your total deficit should rarely exceed 20% of your TDEE (maybe 25% of your TDEE while you're classified as obese). Persistently larger deficits will result in excess adaptation and part of that adaptation is to feel tired and sluggish and thus unable to "waste" calories.

OF course this may or may not be what's happening; but, that's why so many people are asking you about your calories, goals, deficits and what you're eating.

Presuming there is nothing wrong medically. I would honestly say you're not getting enough nutrion. Why not increase amount you eat and see how you feel.
