gloves of not

I am starting to lift heavier dumbbells during my workouts. When I was young working out I had straps that wrapped around my wrists and then the barbell or dumbbell. Now I see a lot of lifting gloves. Should I buy gloves and what should I look for in a good pair besides comfort fit?

No, you should not wear lifting gloves as they tend to compromise grip strength.1

I don't see why you would need gloves for dumbbells...How heavy are they? What lifts are you doing? I only use my gloves for heavy deadlifts and sometimes rows0

Gloves is going to be a personal preference. I choose not to. Others have equipment that tears their hands up and choose to. Gloves rarely improve grip.
The straps you are talking about is to make up for failing grip. They should be used only when absolutely necessary.0 -
Nope...
If grip is an issue, start working on that rather than masking the issue with gloves and straps.0 -
Grip is not the main issue I am concerned with. I only use dumbbells and they are getting in the 65 Lbs range. I was wondering if gloves protect my hand from getting chewed up. My calluses are starting to rip open. Maybe I just have wimpy palms?0

What are you using the dumbells for and are you using the proper grip technique?
For pulling having the bar wrapped in your fingers
For pushing having the bar rest in the webbing of your thumb and palm0 -
If you're getting torn calluses, your grip is wrong and/or you're not taking care of over-large calluses properly.1

Sounds like you need to take better care of your hands and callouses. Trimming my callouses and moisturizing my hands several times a week and I usually don't have any issues.
Straps are mainly going to help with grip, and gloves may not help you much at this point.
I like to use Versa Grips for high rep rows (similar to straps, but you have a palm sized piece of vinyl you wrap around the bar). That may be your best bet if you want something on your hands, but i would stress the hand care first.0 -
Thanks for the input everyone. Tried a pair of lightweight rubber dipped work gloves today. They worked pretty well. They were a little too big for working my wrists, I use a dowel and hanging weight that I twist up and down.0
