3 years ago I arrived DOA at E/R in total renal failure from a prescribed antibiotic. I was thin my entire life, now I'm a WHALE. I lost my Mom 6 weeks ago and I am determined to start living again. I don't know where to start. I need to lose more than 100 lbs, I can barely walk.

You've come to the right place! If moving and exercising is difficult for you, start with your diet. A wise person once said "it is easy to out-eat a good exercise programme, but it's hard to out-lazy a good diet" anyway pop your numbers into MFP and try to stick to what it says.
Tips that may help:
1. Protein helps keep you feeling full, so try to have some at every meal.
2. Don't shy away from snacks but measure them - hunger isn't bad but allowing yourself to get too hungry can cause you to pig out at your next meal and overeat.
3. Weigh all your food in grams on a digital scale, and measure all your liquids in ml. Log all food and drink. Logging inaccuracies can quickly add up!
4. Check out the sexy pants guide. It's awesome.
5. Don't punish yourself when you have a bad day. Treat this as an act of self-love and self-care. You're worth it.
Good luck!17 -

First things first:
WELCOME! Happy New Year! You have taken the first major step to change your life. This is a great group to help walk by, support, etc you on this journey.
Secondly:
You are not a whale. You are human. You are smart, kind, and important. Losing your mom is heartbreaking and I am so sorry! She is looking down on you, let that be your motivation to keep living. She'd want you to be happy and healthy. You said it yourself that you've been given a second chance.
Take small steps with small changes. Drink your water, move whenever possible... even if it's just walking around the house a couple times. Overtime these will become more and more obtainable and you'll be running a marathon before you know it!
I struggle with being too hard on myself, sabotaging myself, not giving myself enough credit. I am changing that this year, because I want to be a better version of myself. I need to learn to love myself completely. You need to do the same. This is a great start to do that!
Have a great day.
P.S. It helps to befriend people... they are literally the best support system,14 -
I am 325lb and don't feel much like going out my front door either. Everyday is a new day though.9

So what happened between three years ago and today? Renal failure from antibiotic overdose is awful, but as far as I know it won't in and of itself make you gain that much weight. Was it medication? Comfort eating? Were you disabled and unable to move around? No one's going to be able to give you targeted advice unless you give more details about what the specific issue that made you gain weight was.1

I can relate, I just hit the 300lb Mark myself and have all of a sudden become a recluse. While normally very social, now I seem to come up with excuses or illness to avoid going out. Even seeing my own family for the holidays was stressful (granted, my family is Very judgmental and LOVE to talk about anyone that gains weight). Anyway, can't wait to lift their jaws off the floor at the end of this year with my new healthy body!! Cheers to 2017.....looking for some weight loss buddies to help keep each other on track and provide support.5

Welcome!!
I think @mumblemagic and @woznube7 are right on the money in terms of advice to get started, so I don't think I can add much other than to say that even the smallest steps are a start toward your goal, treat yourself with kindness and let go of what was.
I've always found MFP people to be very positive and supportive; it's rare to come across someone being judgemental here.
All the best - you can absolutely do this.1 -
Thank you all for your input, you have bo idea how much I appreciate it ! As far as the renal failure, I was DOA on arrival, Creatinine 9.0 they told my husband, I was not going to make it. I was in ICU for awhile. After I came home I kept pushing too hard and took bad falls. I kept getting sick, so my Dr made me stay home. It was not food it was No Activity that made me gain weight. I have been a lifelong athlete.2

Slow and steady wins the race. I'm grateful for winter so I can hibernate or wrap myself up in layers upon layers of clothes. I'm ashamed to say I lost 40 pounds on mfp two years ago. But have gained almost 25 back. No more. Logging really works, start there. Add activity slowly. Just walk, maybe a little more each day than the day before. Treat yourself kindly, you are not a whale. And lucky you, you were a lifelong athlete so your body has some memory of those days. You got this, you can do it! Feel free to add me.4

I am absolutely committed to this journey. I HATE the way I look. I can barely walk, I have fallen so many times, I am TERRIFIED. The minute I try to walk, I can feel every muscle in my body tense up. To whoever said I had an antibiotic overdose, that was not it. I had a terrible Sinus Infection and my Doctor prescribed an antibiotic that I was violently allergic to. That day, I was out driving a car and DON'T remember ANYTHING ! After I went home, I was in and out of the Hospital because I kept getting sick. I am hoping that my lifelong Athletics will help. My Husband is going to start walking with me , and try and help me calm down. I look forward to helping all of you.1

Woznube7 Thank you for a very insightful message. I also really push myself way too much. That is why I have hurt myself so many times. I am now feeling well, I'm not depressed anymore. I am finally at the place to start this journey. I hope you will join me.1

Welcome back to your life. Tomorrow, walk from one telephone pole to the next. Done. Do that for a week. Every day. Next week Waller two. Eat right. Just focus on today. I have a friend who started out 90 pounds over weight and struggled with that one telephone pole distance. By the me of the year he ran a marathon and lost 80 pounds.2 -
Mumblemagic Thank you for good steps, I have never had to diet. I have done massive research on getting rid of this weight. I see most of my problem as not eating, staying in bed depressed, too much frozen food. I also must have monthly blood tests to see how my kidney's are. So far so good. I hope you join me in my journey.0

In addition to all the great suggestions, I would add: find some body positivity support groups and learn to love yourself at your current weight. You can still have the goal of working towards a healthier body, but learning to love yourself right where you are, being proud of yourself and having the right headspace can really make a world of difference in conquering your goals. You are beautiful and worthy, remember that.6

@aka62792, look at all of this support (besides a few judgmental posters). We are all in this together, have all gone through this, we all are going through this. You have what it takes. Lean on us. When it hurts to move, then stop. Do as much as you can, and keep increasing it. Whatever you do, is a step in the right direction. Happy New Year! This will be your year!1

YES , YES, YES I feel so empowered ! 2016 was a Nightmare, my Husband had serious surgery, I got a Breast Cancer scare. The worst was losing my Mom 6 weeks ago. I Ignore judgmental people, only POSITIVE, CARING People allowed in my life. How long does it take to learn this App LOL ?0

The app will take a couple weeks to get used to, but is a good tool. I found that logging from the website was easier, particularly when logging multiple items at the same time.1 -
I just purchased a year of fit pal. I'm getting the App, lost two pounds2

Welcome to MFP. Sounds like you had a tough few years.
I have a comment on the bolded from your post.
If you are going to be a success in your weight loss, the first thing you have to get a hold of is the reality of your weight gain situation. It most definitely *was* food that made you gain the weight. If you hadn't been eating too much for your enforced sedentary lifestyle, you wouldn't have gained the weight. So to say that "It was not the food, it was NO Activity" isn't the reality.
But the good news is that even if your activity level is still curtailed while you recover, you *can* successfully lose all the weight you want to. Exercise is not necessary for weight loss. Eating less than your body burns each day is.
Don't get me wrong, though. I highly recommend exercise to anyone looking to lose weight. It makes the process somewhat easier than by simple caloric reduction alone. But know that for anyone for whom exercise currently is not feasible, weight loss is perfectly doable without a lick of exercise.

Keep up the good work if you try to stick to your cal intake suggested by the app you will see the weight come off. Take it one day at a time. I like to count my steps i started at 8000 steps per day in october now im 20lbs lighter and i try to hit over 10000 steps everyday. I also got a part time job over the holidays doing retail to help keep me moving i figure i could earn a little more money and loose weight.1

After doing some research, I agree with both of you. I have never dieted, because I was swimming or riding everyday. However, this past year, I basically stayed in bed. I ate frozen food or nothing at all. So, now I am making meal plans. I am still having problems with the food diary.0

What problems are you having with the food diary? Perhaps we can help.

Did you read the threads on logging? There is a lot of great information out there:

Food is definately the key. A year ago i was going gym 6 days a week, lifting heavy weights n still putting on weight. Without logging i eas under the impression i could eat what i wanted n lose weight! Oops. No. Then i hot injured n couldnt work out at all. Apart from the mental stress at not being able to move (ive always been fit) i focused on what i could control. Diet. Used MFP to set it to a sedentary lifestyle and experimented with the daily calorie target.
Worked a charm! Did no exercise. Lost weight!
When i started to incorporate exercise again i kept same level til i reached goal. Now use to maintain.
Things i did at home when everyone was out, get on youtube n find exercise videos. Blast some my fav music and even dance (shuffle) round living room like no ones watching! Did billy blanks boxing vid. Did to my own pace.
In a month i felt better n went outside. Music in, chose a destination to walk to n back. Kept going. With your previous athletic back ground your body will remember and adjust quicker than most. Our bodies CRAVE movement its our brains that stop us!
Get your food right n any exercise is a bonus1 -
YAY, YAY, I figured out how to add my food ! However, it said I'm not eating enough !1

Seems like you're feeling good about this
One resource I found particularly inspirational was Cameron Diaz's body book. She has lots of good information in there* based on sound science and not woo. She is not a proponent of the BS Hollywood fad diets. Her key principles are basically to look after yourself and feed yourself a healthy diet and exercise as an act of self love, on an ongoing basis not just to lose weight. Most of it told me what I already knew but the way she writes is very feelgood and helped me break my psychological diet fatigue. If you don't like reading the audio book on Audible is really good.
*some of the scientific advice has changed since she wrote the book - notably her advice on eggs.1 -
I have a kindle, I can pick it up on Amazon. Thank you so much for your help and support . I have lost 5 pounds WHOO HOO3
