Just had a funny and frustrating run in with a personal trainer at my new gym. He pulled me aside to tell me about a free one time training session. Nice of him

Not sure why but 98% of my post didn't show.
Long story short was just told by a PT that CICO doesn't work
It does! Lost 20 lbs so far in 6 mo and kept it off7 -
Did he have some Beachbody or Advocare crap to try to sell you, or is he a 'bro' who believes you have to eat brown rice, broccoli and chicken breasts 24/7 to lose weight?6

No one at the gym knows what the *kitten* they're talking about.6

I once had someone from Herbalife come talk to me when I was on the stationary bike. Kept showing me pictures of his own journey and his wives. Was very annoying.0

I would have asked him "then how did I lose weight and keep it off? osmosis?"5 -
i belong to a chain fitness center, every manager comes up to me and tells me that i should get a personal trainer because i workout so hard and i know the moves pretty well, i told the guy, ''you had three tries with me, now i dont need a trainer, because i have one now" . that manager asked me if they were certified, i told him, "lwell your trainers are certified quitters on clients.." lol (one trainer left the business, another got fired, and another one didnt want to train anyone, he just wanted dates...not with me...but he always had an excuse not to do a training session with me since i already paid him. i got my money back. lol ) lol

People will always be trying to sell rubbish to people who are trying to lose weight. Clearly CICO is working for you and for a lot of other people, if he comes over again just shut him down immediately and tell him you're not interested, if he keeps bothering you, complain to the management. You're paying to work out, not to listen to his sales pitch.1 -
Tell him you can give him a one time free science lesson.9

CICO doesn't make money for anyone--that's why it's bad mouthed.22

This is the sad truth.11 -

Fyi if you used an emoji that's probably why your post got cut off - that's happened to me. You can use them in your newsfeed but not in the forums for some reason.2

not sure why someone disagreeing with CICO is 'shaming' you?
smile and nod, and walk away. as the saying goes, opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one...5 -
I know what you mean though- my trainer was (and still is) against calorie counting, even though I barely lost any weight training with her for many MONTHS and eating "healthy", and then as soon as I started using myfitnesspal to track my macros and implemented a 300 calorie deficit I immediately started losing weight.
Also the training manager flat out told me that dieting by reducing calories only works ONCE, but once you've done that and then gained the weight back it never works again because you can't "trick" you body twice. Hahaha!
And they also want everyone there to take these expensive tests (like $300 each) to find out your resting metabolic rate and active metabolic rate- but not sothat you can know how many calories to consume... so that you can buy a heart monitor from them so that when you do cardio you can make sure you're in the "fat burning zone"... OMG SERIOUSLY!!!! So much pseudo science and scamming going on right there!!! Luckily I didn't fall for that. Plus you had to wear this weird mask and breathe through that for like 40 minutes for both tests... no thanks!!
Now that I'm losing weight and looking great they all kinda think it's because of something they did or from me going to the gym, haha! I mean it was extremely helpful to learn how to work out and I love my trainer and I LOVE lifting weights and being fit and active, but the WEIGHT LOSS part all came from CICO. There's a reason they say weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise... because it is.

I have three people in my life that are all Beachbody Coaches..... I hear this all the dang time!!! Its annoying.1

Gotta love it. I was in denial myself until I started really tracking accurately. I consistently gained weight while working out every single day. And not standing around looking pretty kind of working out, lol, pushing myself to my limits. Guess why? Oh yeah, because I was eating more than I was burning.4

even with LCHF diets, imho it still is CICO in the end. I am eating low carb but i'm staying around 1400 calories. So yes I will lose weight.
Whatever works for you that you'll stick with, is what's best6 -

Yeah I was in denial at first too- actually I was oblivious. Eating "clean" and healthy, working out like crazy- thought I was doing everything right but just losing and gaining the same 2 or 3 pounds over and over and couldn't figure out the issue at first because everyone who I thought should know never even mentioned calories!!! I forgot to mention in my above post I even met with a nutritionist at my gym and even she did not believe in counting calories!! She said I was not losing body fat because I was having too many carbs with my breakfast which was spiking my blood sugar and you can't lose fat when that happens. She never once mentioned needing to be in a caloric deficit!!! Ugh! It kinda makes me mad how much effort I put in for so long with no results- it's almost like they were actively trying to hide the one piece of information that would actually help me... but I genuinely think none of them actually believe in CICO!!!3 -
Did he elaborate?
My trainer most definitely believes in CICO (the energy equation) but he also really pushes nutrition and eating well and emphasizes that more than anything...you won't actually here him talking CI-CO all that often with his clients as much as you'll here him talking about good nutrition.
So did your PT really say it didn't work or is he focusing on other aspects?2 -
Glad they aren't hard selling any of this crap at my gym! CICO clearly works and partnered with spending time at the gym and working out it works even better!1

It only works if you pay him to tell you it works. Lol! This is why I scoff at personal trainers most of the time. They might be good for specific training, like weight training or martial arts, but beyond that, I'll do my own dieting thank you. ;P2 -
dont worry about it, just make sure you have your headphones on again when you see him3

That advice applies to most trainers in most chain/franchise gyms.2 -

Also applies to people in general.6 -

Whenever I have someone try to sell me some new herbal remedy or diet wonder, I tell them I am allergic to aloe vera...that stops most of them immediately.1

FWIW I've lost a lot of weight with CICO, but at some point it stops working if you plateau, and then try to drive the CI too low -- then your CO calculations are wrong because your metabolism slows down. I didn't believe it until I tried ramping up my CI, especially protein, and boom, plateau broken.
However, gym person sounds like a shyster.2 -

That's why I hold to the don't go below the BMR rule, actually prefer to go about half way between BMR & TDEE for my deficit, and adequate protein is a must... there are more factors than just CICO of course, but the MAIN factor when it comes to weight loss is CICO.
Great way of explaining it though- about the metabolism slowing when CI is too low. That's a hard one to get across to some people.1
