Hi,
Does anyone do or has tried the Low Gi diet?
I am thinking of trying it more for my health side of things. But would love to hear what you think of it?

I would highly recommend watching the below video, Dr. Layne Norton discusses this in depth:

Personally, the GI system is rather flawed as it looks at foods in isolation, post fasting. And going with lower GI vs higher GI foods won't necessarily improve health: Think berries vs banana. Ultimately, the biggest drivers for health are weight/body composition (the latter more in particular), exercise and genetics.

Having said that, if low GI foods allow you to eat more volume which allows you to stick to your calorie goal, than it can be beneficial. But personally, I can't go without potatoes as they satiate me better than any other carbs/fat. Proteins are my number 1 item for satiety.

Nutrition is my number one for satiety, and variety number one for nutrition - so, cutting out foods based on nothing besides how that food, in isolation, impacts blood sugar levels, seems absurd.

Thanks, it seems similar to the katogenic diet which is used for Epilepsy. That is the main reason I am thinking of trying the LowGI to see if it helps epilepsy.

I encourage you to discuss this option with your doctor.

Low GI and Ketogenic can be different. You can eat a fair amount of carbs on low gi (as long as they fit the criteria). But on ketogenic you tend to eat less than 50g of total carbs. Since you have epilepsy i would discuss keto with your doctor. And join the low carb group.

I have no choice right now but to be low glycemic bc of specific health issues and I'm finding it very very hard to do. I'm suppose to stay at 40% carbs with those being as low glycemic as possible, 40% fat and 20% protein as best I can. Very hard for me because I love my carbs. Since we expect this to be temporary (hoping the issues calling for it resolve themselves with weight loss) I am trying to use that as my motivator right now. I DO feel a difference eating lower glycemic carbs but it's not for everyone. I think if a person has a specific health issue they are trying to address with it, it's fine. But I wouldn't do it if I didn't have to.
