Best program you've tried?

My son had major surgery on his kidney about 4 months ago. He is a very active man child lol, 6'6 198 pounds. (He did lose down to 170 right before surgery and about Christmas he was back up to his normal weight.)
This surgery set him back so much. He was able to dunk a basketball with no effort. He has become very weak from this illness but just recently is getting his mojo back.
Is there a program that I can get him involved with in addition to the normal basketball workout routine he does 6 days a week? I'm really at a loss seeing him so discouraged from this major setback.
He has been cleared as of November 1 to resume his routine which is running, running, running. I appreciate any advice.

Hire a coach with experience helping people with similar things and preferably athletes.

Does it sound like he's interested in weight lifting?

Starting a 5x5 program with lighter weight is great to get started. The Stonglifts app is free and will provide all the info he needs to get started.

He'll see steady early progress with it, maybe enough to get him excited to stay with it.

I've worked with many athletes who've had surgeries or injuries that hampered them from playing the sport they love. Correct rehab training and progressive strength training is important here. He should have programmed INSTRUCTION, so get someone that has experience with this.

He does do a program with trained coaches and staff. I just wanted to know how to get stronger in addition to what he is already doing and not have to hire a Trainer. But thanks for letting me know your 2 cents.

I thought maybe someone had been through a similar situation and could maybe share what they had to do literally... like what they ate extra and how much extra protein.......
