Has anyone had success with this? If so, how did you do it? I'm looking online for jobs and everything I come across that is "work at home" looks like a big scam...

    Hey there,

I work from home, but it's through a physical company that I started with FT in the office. Best thing to do is to search for jobs where you can telecommute, versus 'work from home' positions. It also depends on what you do. I am in IT, so it's easier to find a telecommuting job. Anything that looks like easy money, is probably crap - but there are positions out there!

My situation is similar. I work from home too, but I started out freelancing for the company that was previously my employer. They wanted to reduce headcount and start outsourcing, and the timing was perfect for me to transition from employee to contractor. That was 17 years ago, and I'm still doing it.

I run my own small business from home. I'm a real estate appraiser (commercial/industrial as well as residential). When we built our home 8 yrs ago I designed a 'bonus room' over our 3-stall garage with its own entrance seperate from the house. That way I can limit interuptions from kids, have an occasional visitor without bringing them into the house, and it seems to help me seperate work and personal life. Everyone is different but I strongly suggest finding a way to set aside space and make boundaries or you'll find yourself either working all the time or never being able to work.

Rather than looking for jobs advertised to work from home, I'd do some real soul-searching for what you would LIKE to do and then figure out if there is a way for that to be a work-from-home career. With technology and most businesses running leaner there are a lot more opportunities than ever. Don't forget though there are a LOT of expenses to consider when self employed (accounting/IRS forms, payroll taxes, various insurances, higher utilities, etc) I could go on and on.....But I wouldnt trade it for anything!
