Target for February is 700KM. It will be a challenge as I'm away with work quite a bit.

Got a good start last week and clocked in 212KM, all on Zwift. My target this weekend is to actually get out of the house on my bike.

Wishing everyone best of luck with their targets for February.

@nikkiwolf - Glad to hear you're making progress on the rollers
Thanks! I'm still riding in the kitchen doorway, but I'm actually thinking about being brave and moving the rollers inside the living room in front of the TV. I'd just have to make sure to remove every breakable object in a large radius around, just in case...

@Rebsrockem - Great job on the new distancte to the third rest stop!

@Machka9 Wow, that's a really impressive ride! I can't even imagine riding up and down such a hugh mountain. Awesome job!

    ---

    1.2.17 - 10.1km commute
    2.2.17 - 5.3km (14min) indoor/rollers
    3.2.17 - 12.7km commute
5.2.17 - 2.5km (8min) indoor/rollers - too tired from running for more, but I wanted to practice at least a tiny bit
    6.2.17 - 7.2km (20min) indoor/rollers
    7.2.17 - 7.4km (20min) indoor/rollers

Been a lifetime cyclist, including a Cat 3 racer in the 70's and 80's (yep I am an old geezer) and have completed the Ironman triathlon 3 times. Currently I do about 5 hours of spin classes per week. Once the springtime arrives, I'll be out on the trails on the mountain bike. I gave up road riding 3 years ago when I hit 65. There comes a time in your life when the traffic starts to scare you a bit more than usual, and that was it for me. I'm good with it though, I love mountain biking! I'll go with my usual 20 hours per month of spinning for now, until the MTB comes out.

Only did half an hour on the recumbent exercycle this past week. I’m starting out cautiously because of my lower back problem but I hope to up the ante this coming week.

I was using my normal road tire on my trainer and my tire popped. I learned my lesson, picked up a trainer tire so all is right in the world. Goal is still 550km.

    Feb 1-5 – 42.1km
    Feb 6-12 – 71.6km (on going)

We have snow, slush, and nasty stuff right now that I just don't want to pedal thru! I'm up for the outdoor challenge as soon as this weather gets a little bit better. I'm using a recumbent exercise bike in the house every morning but it's just not the same.

I'm in.... Goal 200 again. Fell a little short last month.. Never know what the winter weather will be like.

I'm only counting my outdoor miles because that is all I can count on a LBS challenge.

    2/1 - 20.58 miles 37*F
    2/2 - 12.65 miles 25*F winds NNW @ 10 feels like 9 accordingly to weather bug lol.
    2/6 - 18.18 miles 45*F
    2/7 - 5.49 miles 52*F so windy 20 mph gust to 30+
    2/9 - 8.38 miles 13*F winds 11 mph feels like 6*

    MTD - 65.31

    YTD - 237.46

@_nikkiwolf_ I've finally had a chance to try out those electric gloves (I think the original conversation was waaay back in the December thread), and the results are.... pretty inconclusive.

Yesterday: -1.9C. Started out with normal heavy gloves, fingers numb within a couple of minutes. Switched over to lobster mitts and fingers back to normal after another 5-10 minutes.

Today: -2.5C. Started out with the electric gloves switched off under the lobster mitts, fingers going numb within a couple of minutes. Switched the electric gloves on, and fingers feeling normal/warmish after 5+ minutes. After another 10 minutes or so, my hands were too hot, so I took off the lobster mitts. At that point, the electric gloves didn't appear to be much if any hotter than I would expect from wearing a thin pair of undergloves; anyway took them off and went with just the lobster mitts, and remained roastie-toastie for the rest of my ride.

Conclusion - complete waste of time at that temperature, may or may not be worthwhile if it gets much closer. Also, found them really uncomfortable with the battery pack on the back of my wrists, which also made it a royal pain to do up the velcro on the lobster mitts, and to get the cuffs of my jacket over them. On balance, I don't think I'll wear them for cycling again, but I might give them a go when I'm commuting by foot/tube in the cold, where my hands tend to suffer more than when I'm cycling.

OTOH, the lobster mitts are great: http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/PXLGWL/planet-x-100-waterproof-crab-hand-winter-glove (lobster mitts / crab hands / whatever you want to call them).

In other news, I've finally found something that will keep my toes warm - I've tried 2 pairs of socks, overshoes, layers of paper between 2 socks, layers of tinfoil... nothing worked. Every time I went over about 45 minutes in low positive degrees C, my toes would go numb.

    Until this:

    0od94wwbk8ha.jpg

These are actually intended to go into a pouch on the back of the electric gloves, but if you activate one, flatten it as much as possible and stuff it under your toes, you have (a) slightly uncomfortable toes, and (b) warmish and certainly not numb toes.

The pack itself is about 2" x 1" by about 3mm thick (that's classic Brit measurements for you!), and it stays warm to the touch for hours. The downside is that they're not re-usable, but they're ideal for those really chilly rides. Here's one of the pads itself:

    qke1wj14x009.jpg

FWIW, I got them from here: https://www.primrose.co.uk/filter.php?vars=type+features&default=37&lhcol=lh_refine_by.php&cPath=37&use_default=0#type=11993&features=

In other news, I rode my bike, in light flurries of snow (hence all the discoveries above):

Last month someone had asked about a stand to put by their bike. There is a laptop table (IKEA) that works really well. You can raise and lower the height of the table as needed and the base is in a Y shape so it fits around he front wheel and can go right in front of you. Oh, and it's about $20 so really economical.

Not sure if the person is still looking for something but thought I'd mention it.

@35dollars Thank you so much for your review of the electric gloves and the lobster gloves!
Sounds like lobster gloves are what I want. It's supposed to warm up to 10°C next week, then I'll be fine in my running gloves again, but I'm sure the winter isn't over yet...

    --

I tried out the sufferfest videos for my indoor training today.
Unfortunately, the windows version only supports ANT+, and my speed&cadence sensor can only communicate vie bluetooth. Supposedly bluetooth support will come later in 2017 - for now, I used another app on my phone to record the sensor data, and my laptop for watching the workout video.
I did one of the shortest videos I found, called "Half is Easy", but it was still hard! There were two 10min sections with 20 times each "15s hard, 15s easy". It was surprisingly fun, too
Today was nearly twice as long as my roller rides so far, with only three stops of a few seconds - once I stopped on purpose to wipe my face with a towel, once I rode of the rollers when I tried for the first time to switch to the lower drop bars, and once I slipped off as I accellerated too choppily for one of the intervals.

My new official longest ever single ride. Also learnt a few interesting things about Garmin / Garmin Connect and Strava. (1) be careful what buttons you press while messing around trying to get the map to update, or you might end up inadvertently pausing your ride for ~25 minutes - doh! (2) Garmin Connect will only reflect the unpaused time - double doh! (3) Strava OTOH, will magically reconstitute the full ride time and distance - woohoo!

OK, last week wasn't great, I was away with work 3 days so no opportunity for any cycling, although I did a couple of gym sessions in lieu.

Total distance this month to date is 274.3km, hoping to get back on track for my 700km target this week as I'm at home.
