Hello All,

I am planning to start adding weight training into my exercise routine. I found the below beginner program and was wondering what people thought about it? Any Suggestions?

For a beginner weight lifting, I would suggest a beginner program. I started with Stronglifts 5X5 and LOVED it!!! Your program looks a bit involved/advanced for where I assume you are currently.

Check out Stronglifts.com. You can download the app and use it at the gym to track your workout, weights and progress.

There's only 5 lifts to learn. It's only 3 days a week, so you have time for rest and/or cardio days. I did this program for about 14 months before I moved on to a more advanced program. AND I saw AMAZING progress. Did I say I <3<3<3 Stronglifts?!?

Gotta agree with Strong Lifts 5x5. Easy to use, understand and follow, with good results.

Thank you. I am a complete beginner in the weight training world. I have been consistently doing cardio and am ready to add weights but I am lost in the weight room.

I will look into Stronglifts 5x5

Awesome! The weight room can be intimidating, especially as a female. Do it anyway! I know I am always silently rooting for the newbies in the weight room.

Also, there is a MFP group especially for women doing Stronglifts. I forget the exact name, but it's a good forum to ask questions, etc. @canadianlbs - What's your group again?

This is the one I'm doing right now.

I like it because I can do it with what I have at home, so no going to the gym. I don't think there is an SL program that I can do with my equipment.

Another vote for Stronglifts. It has a free app that makes it ridiculously easy to follow and track your progress.

I'm going to take a different stance.

Yes, SL is great. Yes, it's the defacto answer to most every strength training question on MFP. But...

I think the idea behind OP's posted program is good. As a beginner, it introduces them to a variety of programming methods (splits). Full body is the gold standard, but push/pull is certainly a proven approach, as is upper/lower. I think the 4th week is probably overkill for a beginner, but I wouldn't say it's bad to do.

The only thing I'd change about it is the length of time you spend in each split. 1 week isn't enough time to really get a feel for things. Ideally, I'd run each one for a month to really get to know each method. Then, assuming you want to stick with lifting, you can choose a program designed around your preferred method. If you like full body and want to stick with it... SL is a great option. If you prefer an upper/lower or push/pull split, then there are programs built around those splits that are great options, too.

Thank you guys for your imput. I will check out all those options.

I have done BodyPump in the past and really enjoyed it but I want to learn how to do a lifting routine on my own since the classes are not always at convenient times.

@quiksylver296 I would love to join that group.

SL5X5 is perfect. Especially the free app on Google/apple.

Will this 'lifting' be at a gym? Great advice and instruction available at most, and probably better than from people on here that you don't know. You could even join one short-term, then get your own weights, but personally I like getting out and seeing how others work out, plus it's a good social activity if you find a partner to lift with...
