Apple pie alternatives

I absolutely love apple pie but it's not healthy really. I've heard that you can use porridge oats to make it healthy. Does anyone know if it's true and do you have a recipe?

Apple crisp. Baked apples with seasoned oats on top. It's not life, but it's pretty good. Lots of recipes in Pinterest, I just use the one in the Betty Crocker cookbook.3

Baked apples are pretty good by themselves. A cobbler or a crisp will be your best bet.

I made these cherry zoats once. You could do it with apples easily. It is oats mixed with shredded zucchini, probably some protein powder and seasonings, then baked for a bit with a fiber one brownie on top and topped with cherries and low fat whip. I ate the whole thing. I think it was like 400 calories.

Using oats might increase fiber somewhat but I doubt it would have a significant effect on the total amount of calories. I wouldn't consider one small slice of apple pie unhealthy. If apple pie is a trigger food for you - once you start eating it you feel like you can't stop - you may wish to avoid it for a while.

Over the years, I have learned that making baked apples from Rome apples give you the most pie-like taste. Here's what I do. Core 6 Rome apples, and lay them in a baking dish that can be tightly covered. Sprinkle the apples liberally with cinnamon. Fill the core hole with either raisins or seedless grapes, and a bit of walnuts, if you like. Sprinkle again with cinnamon and fill the baking dish about 1 inch with water. Seal and bake at 350 for a minimum of 1 hour. You will know these are done when the skin pops open and breaks free of the apple. Using the Rome apples really does make a difference. McIntosh would be my 2nd choice. You can serve these hot, warm or cold.

I suppose you could make apple pie "healthier" by using whole wheat flour in the crust and reducing the sugar. I suppose that if you used one of the sweeter apples (like a Honeycrisp) you wouldn't even need to add sugar. But apple pie doesn't seem particularly unhealthy to me in the first place.0

I don't really care about pie crust, I'm all about the filling. So I'll mix up a portion of filling, cook it in the microwave. Sweeten with brown sugar splenda or stevia to cut calories. It's a fantastic pancake topper, or goes on plain oatmeal to make it fantastic.
Apple pie filling: peel and chop an an apple, put in a mug with a teaspoon of cornstarch, mix. Add a tiny bit of water to it, add sweetener and cinnamon to taste. Cover and microwave 1-2 min until soft and delicious.2 -

I substitute my apple pie with cherry pie. Just eat the dang pie and keep it within your calorie goal.2

You can still eat apple pie. Just fit it in.
I've had a nice 'pie' that was basically 2 sheets of puff pastry, baked on their own with a sugar free well seasoned apple 'stew' placed between the layers between serving with a serving of whipped cream or Dream Whip on top. It was years ago, but very tasty.
You can find lower calorie apple pie recipes online. Some apple pies only have crust on the top which minimizes calories.0 -
I get a tin of pie apples, add a little bit of cinnamon and microwave. Add some toasted oats/muslei ontop (only about 30g) and it is delicious. Definitely not a normal apple pie/crumble, but damn it satisfys the cravings and is low on the cals.0

Damn diet. My first thought is that "serves 2" is just about the right size. I used to make lemon pudding using the pie filling mix and just scarf it all back.

I just make stewed apples (compote basically) with cinnamon and a little sugar. Excellent hot dessert, everyone loves it and it's very nutritious and easy on the calories. Fabulous with plain yoghurt or custard.
If you wanted to make it more pie like you could bake little puff pastry shapes and sprinkle a few on top. You could bake a whole pack of puff pastry this way and freeze the bits, then refresh them briefly in the oven or a dry pan before serving.

Yup. I use one apple in a small ramekin and half a pack of oatmeal. All in, 200 cals. (Apple 90, oatmeal 75, brown sugar 25, cinammon10). Enjoy.0
