No more tilapia?

I keep hearing that tilapia is really the worst fish to eat. Has everyone pretty much stopped eating it for protein now?

I had Tilipia once, it tasted like dirt to me. I can't eat it. Yuck. After reading the few replies, I know why it tasted like dirt now. I love fish, but not tilapia.

Fish that tastes like dirt is nothing! You guys should try Rakfisk. You'll be begging for the sweet release of death after even smelling it.

Tilapia makes me grateful that I am allergic to finned fish.

In aquaponics, tilipias are very popular because they breed fast, survive in filth, and produce a bunch of *kitten*. The *kitten* if fed to the plants in the garden, and the people eat the plants, occasionally also the fish. Any critter that can be kept alive and *kitten* in the water is suitable, but tilipias are easier to keep alive.

I don't care how the fish is raised any more than I care how sausage is made. I just plain don't like tilapia. Tastes like scrambled egg whites to me which I greatly dislike.

There is NOTHING wrong w/farmed tilapia.

It's cheap, has no taste that I can notice (trout and salmon have stronger flavors) and has a firm flesh that is easy to cook in many ways (braise, poach, deep fry, stir fry or pan fry) and will take on any flavor you add to it.

Then why so much hate for it? I see article after article saying it's the worst fish you can eat.

It's the "gross" factor, and too many people buying into it.

It's a pretty dirty fish...that fish will eat pretty much anything. It's farmed and they feed them chicken *kitten* instead of fish food. It's one of the reasons it's so cheap. It also doesn't have any benefit really in terms of omega 3 fatty acids.

I've never eaten it. I only eat wild caught (frozen)...mostly Alaskan Sockeye and Alaskan Pacific Cod.

I don't eat it either. I mostly eat local wild caught (mostly frozen) alaskan sockeye salmon, local, wild caught trout, and sustainable, wild caught sardines (on salads). YUM

I tend to use the Monterey Bay Aquarium app for choosing "clean" and sustainable seafood.

    Just nonsense IMO.

Catfish is another farmed bottom fish and I don't hear similar criticism of it. Both are delicious when properly prepared and cooked.

Oh man, catfish is one of the few fish I cannot stand. I think it's the texture that gets to me.

I used to eat a LOT of tilapia. I didn't die. But I did discover different fish that I like a lot more, so I haven't eaten it in a couple years. It is cheap, easy and fast to cook though.

I don't think too highly about factory farmed chickens and beef, still eat em like I do tilapia.
I don't eat too much seafood in general because of the price barrier.

I really like tilapia. Also there's a fish called Basa, it's very buttery & tender. I read it's a Vietnamese fish
