hi everyone, im not new to this, so i understand weight loss isnt linear etc, i weigh and measure everything and i exercise 3 times minimum a week using the TDEE method.
i would like to pick peoples brains regarding a gain i had.
4.3lbs
i went away at the weekend to great yarmouth, i had 3 days off plan not logging and eating what i liked. i thought then monday-friday i could try claw a bit back and lose some of the water that i possibly was holding from eating crap at the weekend.
however i got on the scales today and gained 4.3lbs still after 4 days of good logging.
could it be possible that im still holding water from the weekend? i know i didnt eat 14,000 calories over maintenance so it has to be water right? but why would it remain after 4 days back to cleaner eating??

i forgot to mention that i am currently being treated for hypothyroidsim, so can it be that even though im adequately medicated its still rather easy for me to gain weight?

How close are you to your TOM/ovulation?
Did you increase your exercise intensity during the week?
Did you increase your sodium consumption?
When was the last time your medication level was checked?

If you're certain of your logs, then it really is just a matter of hanging in there.
(I need to take my own advice... 4.4lbs up on the scale due to new exercise. Frustrating as hell but I know it's just water...)

Hi If it makes you feel any better I had a weekend in London for my birthday where I just had exactly what i wanted both booze and food .Scales today after a full 5 days back on it are 3.5lb up.I am convinced sometimes it takes a bit longer for your body to recognise your healthy habits than it does the bad ones !!!I am hoping by next week it will have gone down again .......I have questioned my thyroid but my Dr is convinced its ok !!

It can vary individually but I have found that something like a 4 lb gain after a day of high carb/sodium eating can stick around for a few weeks. I would not expect any improvement after 4 days in this situation.

It can take longer to lose the gain than gain the gain sadly
That's why they say only have time off plan rarely until goal then if you need time off plan reflect that into maintence
I can gain and then it can take 2-3 weeks to lose it or a gain doesn't always show immediately
I've been to lots weightloss groups and people cheat and lose then stick to plan and gain the next week the body is a mystery

It can take me a full 7 days to "recover" from one to three days of excess. (Think Thanksgiving or Christmas)

I'm going off plan for 9 days starting next week. VEGAS! But will be walking, hiking, and will search for a recumbent bike in the fitness center, and will be making minor attempts to choose less calorie dense foods if possible, but you know, I'll need a good base for my drinking.

I'm mentality preparing myself for a 5 lb gain, with no regrets!

    It's a strange experience that's for sure.
I had weighed myself Friday and by Saturday had lost 8 pounds, after a KFC on the Saturday I weighed myself on the sunday and had put 5pounds on! It's weird there was no way I ate like 15,000 calories to put on 5 pounds! I need to get into the routine of weighing myself once a week.
I feel like my body takes a little longer to digest alcohol or takeaway food than most people, so I'm hoping that it was 5pounds of water and retaining carbs. Maybe that's the way you work as well

Its likely you are still retaining some water weight from the weekend, it takes me to Friday to see my usual happy goal number, so that's 4 days when the scale remains higher after weekend eating - and that's me just eating slightly above maintenance (its just water weight from the glycogen being replenished and then it takes its time leaving the body once back to normal eating.)

Just think about the 3500 cals making 1lbs fact - if you know you haven't eaten that much above maintenance calories then you just know you haven't truly gained.

ps I had a weekend away to Glasgow two weeks ago and I'm still up 0.5lb from that plus the normal day to day fluctuations, that 0.5 was true gain - I still fully expect that to be gone by this weekend because thats the norm for me after being on holiday. Once normal routine is resumed the weight eventually goes back to what it was. Have faith

thats brill thank you for that, its hard training the brain to analyse the gains, and assess whether its water or true gain, but you are correct, my Christmas gain didnt stay long either,

You understand that weight loss is not linear and that weight can fluctuate yet need advise on why your weight has fluctuated??

You didn't log for 3 days but you probably didn't eat 15k calories over maitnenance so it's not all fat.
You ate crap which is filled with carbohydrates and sodium.
Sodium & carbohydrates make the body retain water.

This. It's mostly water weight. Drink more water, get back on track and that 4.x lb gain is probably a 1lb gain or less. Sometimes none at all. Give it a few days and re-weigh once your sodium levels have been normal and you have drank lots of extra water.
