I keep seeing posts about people losing weight without exercise. Unless there is a medical reason why you can't....I don't understand why you wouldn't want to! It helps me to have less brain fog, less stress, muscle, stamina, better breathing...on and on and on!

We all have to find our own way. I've lost weight with & without exercise. What I learned from that is I will not maintain without exercise (desk job, sedentary, hate yardwork, etc)....in other words we're not all the same. That took me years to figure out.6 -
I agree exercise is great, but you don't need it to lose weight. There are some people who just don't have time (work full time, kids, activities, etc.) so its more of a stressor if they have to think about adding this in too. At some point its a personal decision to decide when you can fit it in your life, but don't assume everyone has the time.5

It seems to me that saying that exercise is personal preference is much like saying that how fat you are is a personal preference. While technically true, it makes no more sense to say that it is okay for a person not to exercise than it does to say that it is okay for a person to be overweight. Being overweight has health risks, but lack of exercise carries even greater health risks. It is true that a person can lose weight doing nothing but sitting on the couch and eating pizza, but that doesn't mean it is a good idea. Eating less will result in weight loss, but people would be better off if they would continue to eat the same while increasing their activity level.6 -

But you're not the one who gets to dictate that. It is 100% their choice of how they live their life. No one put you in charge. Maybe their doctor or their loved ones can have a say but not you. Maybe they would be better off but maybe there are 100 factors that we don't know about that prevent them from exercise. Eyes on your own plate and on your own workout pants.14 -
There are far more degrees of activity between sitting on the couch and eating pizza and say....tough mudder. Its often not an all or nothing. Thats why it personal preference - the level of activity varies from person to person according to their needs, wants and abilities. We all find our success in different ways. For me, it was no intentional exercise, BUT leading a relatively active life within my medical restrictions. I have no doubt that a lot of folks here would say the same. You can get a good work out running after little kids. You can get a good workout if your job is very active. Exercise if it makes you happy but its not necessary for weight loss, or even a happy, fulfilling life.6

Except I'm in excellent health by every marker my doctor goes by. I'm also one of the very few people who are successfully maintaining the weight loss. All without intentional exercise. I'm doing things in a way that's realistic and sustainable for me, for the long term.6 -

I'm not exercising at the moment. I'm just focusing on eating whole, natural foods to lose weight. It's working for me so far. Exercising is great if you feel you will maintain it for the rest of your life. But I honestly don't see myself going to the gym all the time. I do, however, see myself going for walks around the block, go on hikes on nice days, or follow some yoga videos on YouTube sometime in the future. But I love Netflix too much and my job is basically sitting in front of a computer, and my hobbies are painting and drawing. I enjoy indoor activities more, as I'm a major introvert. To each their own. Everyone should do whatever works for them. I just know that I'm not the type to workout all the time, but changing the way I eat is the main culprit for me because I always consumed milk, cookies, chocolate, pizza, burritos and all the other processed foods you find in the frozen section. And I'm trying very hard to not eat that way ever again because it made me feel very sick and very depressed. Eating healthy has been life changing so far and the taste of processed foods don't taste as great as it once did.
I think it's awesome that people feel wonderful after a workout. I feel wonderful after eating healthy whole foods and not having to do strenuous workouts. Everyone is different.6 -

Yes^
Some people DO lead active lives without deliberate exercise. I look at my mother (in her 80's) - gardening, up on a ladder painting.....things that not everyone her age can do.6 -

people who are overweight are a drain on the health system and cost a TON of money more than people who simply don't exercise.
You don't think people with osteoporosis are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with heart disease are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with a weakened immune system are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with cancer are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with cognitive problems are a drain on the health system? All of these are risk factors that are reduced with exercise.
What about other strains on public resources? Our roads are clogged with traffic. Our bridges are in need of repair. Our air is filled with pollution. All of these problems could be reduced if people would choose to walk or ride a bicycle for a few of the trips they make.3 -

that is fine, but as humans we have free will to do what we want. If one wants to eat less and not exercise because they do not like exercise then that is fine.
I love to lift weights but not everyone does ,it is personal preference. So I stand by original assertion.3 -

Mother nature is the one who dictated that. Timothy isn't saying Thou Shall, he's saying obvious and true things about what a person requires to be healthy. Like it or not, it's true.7 -

A. Don't want to, no exercise holds an interest or they can't work up the enthusiasm.
B. They don't get the endorphin rush (I feel physically better in my body/joints, but I'm drained sometimes mentally and physically).
C. They're trying to get the eating under control. They're trying to learn to eat better as a first step, so questions come up as to if that's feasible (which it is.
Obviously it's better for overall health, but it is a personal preference for weight loss.2 -

Here's how exercise goes for me:
exercise -> lose weight -> get hurt -> gain back the weight I lost plus some extra -> repeat
This time around, I'm not doing any directed exercise. I have a sustainable eating plan and I don't have to worry about hurting myself. It's much simpler to avoid eating 300 calories than it is to figure out how I'm going to exercise them off in a safe way.6 -

This is how we always are? I understand where you're coming from on it, but I'm one of those people who isn't really exercising right now. I like to walk outdoors (treadmills are boring), and I don't get off till 6pm so it's dark outside (and still cold, I'm a weenie), plus I technically haven't been cleared for exercise from my Dr (had surgery, healing for surgery #2). So I just watch my food intake.2 -

Regular exercise is linked to a reduced risk of osteoporosis, which is the point that @TimothyFish was making.3 -

I am never trying to exclude anything or anyone. Not my style.
I was just trying to make a statement about me and only me that encouraged others.
I lost 50lbs without working out. I was just saying, for me and only me, this time of losing weight has been very different and I enjoy it and my body/attitude much more. I attribute it to exercise for again, me and only me.
I finally see ME and it's been a long time coming.

I'm with you! I also feel better emotionally and physically as well as sleep better.
Also, with exercise people will be able to stay independent longer when they are old. My OH's mother is in a nursing home because her sedentary lifestyle caused her to lose so much strength in her legs she became unable to go to the bathroom unassisted. She had previously had many interventions with physical therapists, but never kept up with her exercises.
Even her 5 star nursing homes is a very depressing place0 -

It seems to me that saying that exercise is personal preference is much like saying that how fat you are is a personal preference. While technically true, it makes no more sense to say that it is okay for a person not to exercise than it does to say that it is okay for a person to be overweight. Being overweight has health risks, but lack of exercise carries even greater health risks. It is true that a person can lose weight doing nothing but sitting on the couch and eating pizza, but that doesn't mean it is a good idea. Eating less will result in weight loss, but people would be better off if they would continue to eat the same while increasing their activity level.
But you're not the one who gets to dictate that. It is 100% their choice of how they live their life. No one put you in charge. Maybe their doctor or their loved ones can have a say but not you. Maybe they would be better off but maybe there are 100 factors that we don't know about that prevent them from exercise. Eyes on your own plate and on your own workout pants.
What do you mean by dictate? people who are overweight are a drain on the health system and cost a TON of money more than people who simply don't exercise.
You don't think people with osteoporosis are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with heart disease are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with a weakened immune system are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with cancer are a drain on the health system? You don't think people with cognitive problems are a drain on the health system? All of these are risk factors that are reduced with exercise.
What about other strains on public resources? Our roads are clogged with traffic. Our bridges are in need of repair. Our air is filled with pollution. All of these problems could be reduced if people would choose to walk or ride a bicycle for a few of the trips they make.
You don't think people who strain muscles, break bones, get concussions, fall, etc etc etc because of exercise are a drain on the health system? Sure, exercise is good for you, but it's not like people who do exercise never get ill or hurt. My aunt works in A&E. She gets a lot of people who get hurt running, playing football, playing rugby, playing hockey, weightlifting, playing tennis, badminton, or any other of the many sports out there. Squash especially can be dangerous! My grandad is 84 and in perfect health other than his mind (dementia) and his knees, which are awful and need replacing because he played football for far longer than he should have. Once we stopped him going to the gym, his mobility increase dramatically. I'm not saying exercise is bad, I'm just saying it's not as cut and dry as you seem to want to make it!
The only time I have ever been to A&E was due to a torn ligament when running as a child. I currently do not exercise (I don't have time, I'm in my last semester at university) but I have no health problems linked to this. Let people do what they want, mate.2 -

all of those are severely heightened through obesity
Regular exercise is linked to a reduced risk of osteoporosis, which is the point that @TimothyFish was making.
yes it is to an extent. Risk of osteoporosis is linked mostly to genetics though.
Risk is absolutely linked to genetics (among other things). That doesn't mean that regular exercise doesn't help people maintain bone strength (in some cases even augment it) and serve to reduce the risk that one will actually develop it.
Our genetic risk of getting a disease can't be removed. But our lifestyle can help reduce (not eliminate) the chances we will actually develop a condition.2
