Starting Keto

Alright, well I just got back from a 5 day vacation and I been struggling to stay on a diet for at least since January and I gained a lot of weight and would love to get back to how I was around Christmas. I been eating a lot of carbs and I seem to get a lot more hungry when I have them. I want to surpress my cravings for them plus sugar because I have a strong sweet tooth. I want to try new foods and be able to stick to a diet that can burn the extra fat I gained. What should I expect when I start keto? How can I have lots of energy without feeling weak and sluggish? How many total carbs can I have when I'm not overweight and very active? How can I feel and stay full (I can easily put away a lot of food bc I have a huge appetite but I want to fix that)? What about fixing my sweet tooth? I remember last year I went on keto (the wrong way) I had like 40-50 grams of carbs, low fat, and high protein but under 800 calories. I want to be able to eat 1400-1500 calories and stay on keto and lose weight quickly. I just need some tips on how to survive this for about a month or possibly longer.

I am a keto'er my macros are 5% carbs (20g) 75% fat and 20% protein .........Also don't forget sodium (to avoid the keto flu) Its recommended to have 3000 to 5000mg daily ...(pickles, pickle juice ...I make mio , water, and 1 tsp of morton lite salt daily ....Also make sure you take magnesium ( I use magnesium citrate) it helps with leg/foot cramps...look at pinterest, dietdoctor.com, ruled.me and wickedstuffed.com for keto recipes/desserts

In the end, weight loss is only going to happen if you eat a calorie deficit. Meaning you burn more calories than you consume. That being said, I have found that a keto-like lifestyle has worked for me in terms of staying in a calories deficit.
There are many different sources and people that will tell you how many carbs you can have in order to get into ketosis and stay there. I have seen as little as 20g of carbs per day and some as high as 50g. It's something you need to find and work with. Now, many people will tell you that being in a state of ketosis is bad for you. There is a difference between nutritional ketosis and ketoacidosis. Primarily one is life threatening and the other isn't. A quick google search will get you into all the science of it if you want to know more.
When starting Keto you should be aware of something called the "Keto Flu". Cutting carbs in a severe way such as this will cause you to become irritable, tired, have headaches... This can last a few days to a couple weeks depending on the person. Mine personally lasted three weeks. DRINK LOTS OF WATER. It will help.
Now, as for the cravings. They will suck. Not going to lie. I didn't stick to keto till about my 5th time around. I lasted about 6-8 days the first few times before I caved to high-carb foods. I'm currently on my 5th week and have had no cravings. This will take a lot of willpower and planning on your part. You will also need to make sure you hit your protein macro, that's the more important one to pay attention too.
This is all I can really think of right now, I'm still pretty new to it. Google searching and Pintrest has really helped me.
Anyways, good luck, don't rush it. The weight didn't get there overnight, don't expect it to come off quickly.
Also, sorry for any typos, I'm on a phone...

Will this make me want to cut workouts until I'm use to it or should I push myself to keep going? I usually do a 2 hour workout and I'm gonna start adding in strength training to tone up. What about multivitamins and coconut oil? Will those help?0

I take a multivitamin everyday just to make sure I make my nutrients. I also supplement extra calcium, vitamin D, and B complex per my doctor. Coconut oil will help if it has a high MCT content. I, personally, haven't noticed a difference, but I haven't been concerned with one and have been content with my olive oil.
In regards to your workout, it will be up to you if you cut them. You could try shorter workouts and see how you feel until you are adjusted to keto, or just power through it. I, personally, haven't started my workout program as of yet and have still been losing weight.1 -
I really dislike the term "keto flu". It's really a completely preventable set of symptoms caused by an electrolyte imbalance. When you cut carbs, insulin goes down and it is insulin that causes water and electrolyte retention. That's why keto'ers often lose a few pounds of water in the first week.
Because you will lose electrolytes you will need to increase your sodium intake to replace the sodium you've lost. You'll need 3000-5000mg, or more, of sodium per day. To give you an idea of how much that is, there is 2300 mg of sodium in one teaspoon of table salt. If you add a teaspoon of salt to water, take salt tablets, drink broth, make keto-ade, and salt your food liberally, it should help you avoid the fatigue, headaches, nausea, weakness, BM issues, muscle aches and spasms that are caused by low electrolytes. Extra water does not actually help and may actually make it harder to balance your electrolytes.
Some ketro'ers find they have a very slight dip in energy in the first few weeks or months of a low carb diet, until they are fat adapted. It is not a large dip in energy and generally is not a problem for people. If you are planning a major competitive athletic event, you could notice a difference in performance. Say a 50 minute 10K instead of a 45 minute 10k race.
I went keto about two years ago. I ate about 1500 kcal per day and that included about 20g of carbs and 70-90g of protein. I lost the 40lbs I needed to lose in about 6 months, without exercise. My energy seemed to increase. At the very least, my energy leveled out. I no longer had dips of energy in the afternoon, or a couple of hours after eating. My appetite dropped quite a bit and my sugar cravings stays quite low as long as I avoid many carbs or sugars. It's a real blessing to no have food on the mind, or have light headedness and shakes because I have not eaten for 2 hours! LOL After about a month or two, I also noticed an alarming increase in cognitive clarity. I could think much better.... That's one disturbing improvement that will keep me low carb for life. Oh, and my blood glucose levels are very steady and much lower.
I'm now eating around 2000kcals. My weight is pretty steady. A very slow loss is still happening.

So if increase my sodium intake, it should help with the fatigue? Bc the worst feeling is feeling weak while trying to workout, even with enough calories and protein. I'm very nervous about this new diet but I really need to change my habits and so I can feel good about myself. I just spent 5 days straight eating whatever the heck I want and I have no idea how many calories I ate. All I no is that I went carb crazy. I'm estimating 3-5k a day. I did do some hiking to help me out and before the trip, I followed a strict diet but it caused me heavy cravings for carbs and sugar and I end up binging. I feel huge because I also had like 3 carb and sugar binges before the trip and now this. I hope the keto diet helps me bc I want my physique back and be able to fit in my new clothes I got. I love to workout so my biggest worry is the sluggishness and weakness.0

It should. Try teaspoons of salt in water and broth and give it a week or so.
The first day of two has a bit of an energy hit, but it goes quickly. There may be a mild energy dip if your electrolytes are balanced but nothing extreme.1 -
Alright, I'll try it out. I'm very nervous about starting.0

I just no I tried and failed at a few diets, the 1200 calorie, the low fat high carb, those just caused me to overeat or binge on more sugar and carbs. My goal is to suppress that and lose weight but I don't want to undereat. Plus all the low fat high carbs has caused me to always feel bloated.0

Keto, or simply LCHF, might agree with you then. Like you, I do not do well on higher carb, low fat diets... that's how I gained. Same goes for moderation.
