Questions about increasing my distance -- Minor annoyance with MFP's interface

So I can comfortably run the 5K at this point. Last weekend I came in second in my age group at a pretty big run. Yay. Now I want to ramp up to the 10K. I've started with fitness labs' 5K to 10K app and I'm on week one. Is there anything I should know or do to ease the transition? Any tips or advice from more experienced runners? I am going to a shop to get fitted for better shoes soon. I know that much. Any other unknown unknowns I should know about?
Now the annoyance -- I notice that we can enter a time for our exercises now. What exactly is the point of that? I can't imagine a scenario where I need or want to know exactly when I ran this morning, or any other morning. I do it when I do it. This just seems like a purposeless addition. Correct me if I'm wrong.

A time for your exercise? I've only ever seen a "How Long" in minutes, and I still only see that on the website. Unless that was just rolled out in a new version of one of the apps.1

You probably have a fitbit or other step counter device connected to your MFP pal. The purpose of the times is so that your steps aren't counted twice, once on the device and once when you add your exercise.3

could also be good for trends analysis if you want to geek out that much - looking at time during the day you worked out correlated to food eaten when2

Phone app you just add in the minutes and just ignore it, your diary entry for the exercise does not show it anyways when you have completed your entry for your exercise.
On the web site, same thing, just ignore it, it is not recorded anywhere on your diary.0 -
When you don't have a fit bit or something line that then the time helps to calculate your calories burned0

I noticed times showing up just after I connected MFP with Fitbit, so I expect it's there for synching the data.1

The only reason MFP will ever ask for the time you exercised is when you do have an activity tracker (Fitbit) so if you are recording exercise you can log it without messing up other data from it.0

Stick to your programme and don't be tempted to do more on the light weeks. They are in there to allow your tendons etc to get used to the increase.
I know you want to come first for your age group but I'd concentrate on your 10k goal first, This will naturally make you quicker over 5k any way.
