PORTIONS

I am trying to make better food choices. I don't notice People talking about portions. I generally eat more than a frozen food portion. I am also battling a Thyroid problem. I am really struggling, trying to eat right.

The whole premise of this app is to weigh food.

So a portion is really whatever you decide to consume, rather than some arbitrary amount.

What is it you are struggling with specifically?
What is your definition of eating right?

Yep...one day my portion of fries may be 300 calories, and the other day it may be 500 calories. It just depends on what else I'm eating and if I want to eat some fries, I will fit it in.

My evening meal most days is a Lean Cuisine with a whole bag of steam-in-bag veggies. That gives me a large volume of food for about 400-450 calories.

I'm also in the "a portion is whatever you decide to consume" camp. Suggested serving sizes are just that - suggestions. Sometimes my portion will be 3 servings and sometimes it will be 1/9th of a serving depending upon what I'm wanting right then and how it fits into my day's calories and nutrition goals.

    What @cityruss said.
My portions are of a size that suits me and my needs.

    For dinner (averaged out)

    Protein is usually about 125g
    Pasta, potato, rice 100g
Veg depending on density anywhere from 200-300g
    Oils/dressings 10-15g.

You have to decide the weighed portion sizes you need for your calorie goal, nutrition goal, satiety level, and food preferences. It is very individual.

    Cheers, h.

ETA: make sure your thyroid is checked regularly and medication adjusted as you lose weight.

What? People here talk about nothing but portions. That's why we're all over weighing food, and not at all about restricting what you eat.

I think having smaller portions is great at least it works for me. However, I don't calorie count or weight my food, so for me eating smaller portions of things is what I go off by.

I've successfully lost 32 pounds never touching a food scale. You mentioned you generally eat more than one frozen meal I'm going to say it would depend. If the portions are already small I would eat a second one. But if it's huge in portion size I personally wouldn't, but to each their own.

Actually Portion is very important, who ever says otherwise is extremely wrong. Here is a link for what is recommended. Dietary guidelines for Americans, is a good place to learn about the food guide pyramid and what is recommended for adults and it includes serving size. It also talks about how much exercise a person of your size, gender should be getting, calorie intake.....all that good stuff. It's a great place to educate yourself.

I use a lot of recipes from my favourite cookbooks, and they give the recommended number of servings. so I weigh out what is a serving - I weigh the whole dish, divide it by however many servings the recipe says it makes, and then I eat one serving. So if the whole dish weighs 800 grams, and serves 8, then I eat 100 grams.

    @cross2bear.
I tend to make the recipe, weigh it, then divide it into 1or10g servings. That way I can have the amount of servings that fits my calorie and nutrition goal for that meal, instead of arbitrarily eating a recipes' idea of what a serving size should be.

    Cheers, h.

Yes, I have seen some of your meals in the database, and can see that your method would be useful.

I divide the casserole dish by servings. (I'll take a 4-serving meal and use a spatula to cut it into quarters.) Since I'm the only one eating it, it doesn't really bug me if out of a 500 calorie/serving dish, one night I have 475 calories and the next night I have 525. It balances out.

Sounds great, I am sure I was eating too much.

    Thanks

An appropriate serving size for one individual isn't going to be the same as another individual.

Thank you , this is GREAT
