Yes. Some clothes weigh more than others. I've noticed that my tank top and panties (that I usually sleep in) don't make any difference on the scale. Jeans and a t-shirt would. If you have to weigh clothed (like at the gym), just wear the same thing (or very similar workout clothes) each time. That way even if your weight is a little more because of the clothes you will have a consistent trend.

Yes, I should be more accurate with weighing with the same clothing.

With weighing I try to be as accurate as I can and repeat the same circumstances for consistency. I don't realy see the point in collecting data that isn't as accurate as possible.

One thing I have noticed that does make my scales misread is footwear - maybe the different pressure points that shoes of different heels makes but I learnt to always weigh bare foot.

Shoes are extras, not clothes, lol

Here is the test. Weigh your clothes . You will be off by the weight of your clothes.

But day to day you might have that variation (or more) anyways. The best way to assess is to weigh yourself in your clothes, and then immediately strip naked and weigh again. I'm pretty sure that you'll find that your clothes had weight (that can range from 1 lb to as much as 6-7 (or more) depending on what you were wearing)!

I just weigh in my pj's. They are pretty similar and lightweight.
The more you wear and the heavier the clothes are the more it will add to the scale reading.

    Mine usually add 10 pounds.

OP, I think you're asking if it matters for tracking your weight loss. If that's what you're doing, just weigh wearing the same thing (or not wearing anything) each day. If you're trying to get an accurate body weight just once, weigh wearing nothing or wearing something very lightweight.

It would depend on the clothes...shorts and a t-shirt are going to weigh less than my jeans and a sweater...my workout shorts and shirt are going to weigh next to nothing...

    I'm having deja vu.

Edit: I swear this question was asked a few months ago. But can't find it. Oh well.

Surely you understand that it completely depends on what sort of clothes you are wearing, right?

I recently gained 3.5 pounds one morning by taking a shower and getting dressed.

Yes, clothing affects your weight. How much depends on the type of clothing. Jeans, sweaters and shoes are typically heavy. Tank top and shorts might make no measurable difference.

For tracking your weight, the fewer factors that might add random variation, the better. I weigh in my panties after the morning pee stop.

It may be good to weigh yourself in clothes if you are going to do a weight-sensitive activity (tandem skydiving, some horse rental places, bungee jumping, may have weight limits).

Does weighing with and without holding a 20 lb watermelon make a difference?

    Answer: Of course it does.

OP, if you're interested in readings that are as accurate as possible, weigh yourself at the same time (in the morning after using the bathroom) and in the same clothes (pyjamas) or naked.

So, from two recent threads we learn that you can weigh anytime of the day wearing anything you want and weighing first thing in the morning, naked or nearly naked, is a waste of time.

    Huh.

Just annoys me cuz when I hit the doctors office its usually in the afternoon, I'm fully dressed(shoes too) so my weight is about 8 lbs higher and they write it on my chart

Jeans and shoes will make a huge difference. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning either nude or in the same type of clothing each time.

Of course it does. ;) Don't let that stop you from choosing one method (with OR without clothes) for weighing.

I'm a big guy, and big clothes make a difference.

I weigh every day, in the morning, after my morning "business" on the way into the shower. Digital scale: I weigh 3 times, count to 20 each time (lets the digits settle), take the mode (most frequent number, whole number pounds only).

I know some folks advise less frequent weighing - once a week, for instance. I like more frequent waypoints, and don't fret the daily "bouncing around" of the numbers that may occur; I watch the trends. I figure if I'm MFP logging every day, I should check the results every day.

I reeeefuse to strip just to weigh myself, especially in winter! Having said that I sleep in lightweight stuff, boxers and tank top in summer, and light weight pj bottoms and tank top in winter. I did test it once and weighed naked v pj's and it made no difference on the scale.

Now obviously i wouldnt weigh in a winter coat, thermals and gumboots, but pj's is fine for me.
