Why am i finding it difficult to stick to this diet?

    Thank you for this. I keep ping ponging back and forth to myself which diet would be the most effective and work for ME by helping me get to my goal weight. I am wondering do I stick to reduced fat cheeses or get the full fat? Skim or cream? Decisions, decisions.

    The way I've done it in the past was always eating reduced fat food. But I've come to the realisation that a) reduced fat often means increased sweeteners (which are terrible for you) b) it feels like you're even more on a diet (eating low fat mayo when your other half has full fat) c) if I ever get to maintenance, I wouldn't be eating low fat anyway and d) I ended up eating twice as much as it was half the calories

    This time around, the only food group I reduced the fat content of is milk. But then I've always drunk semi skimmed milk, I now drink arla best of both (skimmed milk that tastes like semi) but then I don't drink a great deal of milk. I have full fat cheese, uoghurts etc, just in moderation. Because fat is good for you. As are all the food groups. And restriction leads to bingeing.

    Any dietary change should be sustainable when the 'diet' is finished :)

    What macros are you using, OP? And how diligently are you tracking? What aspect of the diet do you find difficult? And how long have you been doing it.

    Over the years I've done simple CICO (resulted in baby #1 weight lost), Paleo (with no tracking, ended up gaining), Primal (with no tracking, ended up gaining), Intermittent Fasting (with tracking, lost weight), and now I'm Keto (with tracking, working on losing weight from baby #2, currently losing)- but in the end, like the other's said- deficit is king.

    I think there can be pros/cons to all the different varieties of calorie restriction and not every flavor is right for every person. Simple CICO is usually best for most, but it wasn't helping with my binges and blood sugar issues. Paleo- I couldn't stand giving up cheese and dairy. Primal was a bit easier, for me, but I was still having a lot of hunger. Intermittent fasting was... interesting, but I got sick of being so hungry half the day. Keto so far, has been the most helpful for me, in the sense that I never feel hungry, and certainly never get that blood sugar crash hangry feeling anymore. Plus, all that cheese, and nuts, and avocado feels decadent in a sense. That said- it can be tough giving up cakes, and cookies, and bread (and it makes social gatherings sometimes difficult) compared to CICO- which allows those things in moderation.

    My problem is I suck at moderation, even within the framework of CICO. I can't just have 1 cookie and track it. One cookie makes me want 50 more, and then 50 don't seem sweet enough, so then I need something sweeter, and it goes on and on. For whatever reason, I don't find cheese and nuts as easy to binge on, but ymmv.

    The first 3 to 7 days of keto is the hardest, imo, since you are changing how your body is running, but after that it gets a bit easier. Sometimes energy levels can feel low, though (carbs are good for energy and exercise for a reason). If it's something you really want to stick with, there are certainly ways to troubleshoot and find adjustments that work (most particularly sodium and potassium levels), but if you really think it's not the right type of calorie restriction for you- there's nothing wrong with that. CICO will provide weight loss just as well for you as long as you are in a deficit.

    If you can't stick to it then it's not a sustainable way of eating which is what will set you up for maintaining your loss.

    Start by eating what you like to eat. You'll figure out what foods keep you satisfied and what foods are worth eating occasionally.

    What part is hard?

    If you aren't feeling well then you need to increase electrolytes.

    If you find it inconvenient, you may need to plan ahead better.

    If you don't enjoy the foods, perhaps try different foods (or quit).

    If you are trying keto for health reasons though then you just have to suck it up and stick with it. ;)
