Intro - Keto & Prediabetes

Options
Hello Everyone! I'm new to MyFitnessPal and am looking for support on this weight loss journey. With two insulin dependent, diabetic parents and an A1c that varies between 6.1 and 6.4, I have chosen to eat a ketogenic lifestyle to reverse what may otherwise be an inevitable diagnosis of diabetes. I definitely do better with support, so I have joined MyFitnessPal today in order to find community. I'm particularly interested in joining a group of people who are committed to keto and have significant amount of weight to lose (50+). I'm also interested in connecting with those who are pre-diabetic or type 2 and use keto to control their blood sugar. Looking forward to meeting folks here and supporting myself and others in living a healthier life!

Warmly,
Lynea

I'm roughly following Michael Mosely's 8 week blood sugar diet, which also recommends low carbohydrates. (I gave up sugar a couple of years ago, and feel much better for doing it.) The keto diet seems roughly on the same wavelength, and I'll be interested to see how others do.

I lost my Dad last year at 68 from diabetes complications. He was a very sick man for 15 years. Diabetes destroyed his arteries and his heart, and the "diabetes" diet his specialist had him on was full of fruit and carbs and did not help him at all. My Dad is one of 9 siblings, all with type 2 diabetes or dead. My Cousins have also started to develop diabetes (we're mostly over 40 now). At 38 my doctor told me I was prediabetic and would have full blown diabetes by the time I was 40. I tell you, I was terrified. I didn't want to think I would soon be like my Dad and live out my last years in agony waiting for death (he was in hospital about 3 times a year with heart attacks for the last 5 years, and couldn't lay down to sleep because of the angina pain).

Fast forward to now, I'm nearly 43. I switched to Keto 4 years ago. I and strict, under 30g of carbs a day, I do not have cheat days. I eat well and am happy with my diet. I track religiously to keep myself honest. For the last 3 years I have shown no signs of prediabetes or insulin resistance. I know if I go back to a carb laden diet I will be signing my own death warrant, it's that serious.

A lot of people go on about how they couldn't possibly eat such a "restrictive" diet, but I don't feel restricted. I have got to the point where I just think "I don't eat carbs" much the same as a vegetarian doesn't eat meat. My diet is full of meat and eggs and many great vegetables and cream and cheese and olive oil and pate and oysters and all kinds of things. If you have a hankering for something sweet you can easily whip something up with almond flour (as a treat, I don't tend to do this often). I dine out, nothing wrong with a steak and salad and a couple of glasses of red. Many places do a low carb option now.

If you do decide to do it, take it seriously. It could well save your life.
