Yes you need to count calories - eating excess amounts of any macronutrient will cause weight gain. But you don't need to go low carb - if you've tried it before and it wasn't for you, why do it again?

If you go low carb, then yes you need to count the carbs in your fruit. If you want to lose weight, then you need to be in a calorie deficit. Some people can do that naturally without counting and others can't.

I am not going low carb, but I am reducing the amount of carbs I eat. Most fruit is high in carbs and sugar, so you might want to restrict your fruit intake!

I try to stick to low glycemic carbs so my blood sugar remains steady all day. You can google them... I also try to eat Ezekiel bread and things that remind me of carbs like quinoa... I think it is more considered a protein. I'm just getting back... been awhile.

@anne096 welcome to MFP forums and best of success with the low carb way of eating. I have been LCHF since Oct 2014 and being older there was a learning curve in my case. It is helping me recover health lost over the past 40 years.

In my case I just left off sugar (all sweeteners in fact) and all forums of all grains and keep my carbs just under 50 grams most days. I did some carb and calorie counting at first but this Way Of Eating addressed my carb cravings starting about the second week of eating this WOE.

Just finding hidden carbs can take a while. It is not mission critical to do so but if you want to start living more on ketones than glucose most need to keep carbs <50 grams daily. Actually <150 grams daily is the high end of low carb.

No quinoa is much more carb than protein. I like it and eat it (because I don't have any reason to eat low carb), but it's protein content is often way overstated.

For low carb all carbs but fiber count.

Fruits and vegetables both have what's known as "good carbs". Try cutting out all pasta, bread and rice if you're going low carb. The. You will get the majority of my carbs from fruits and vegetables. And yes you should definitely count calories. It is difficult at first but after a while it is second nature.

If the OP is looking to go into ketosis, fruit and veg carbs will kick her out of it as easily as candy carbs.

This was my approach when losing, and has been my approach in maintenance the last 15 years.
It's definitely not ketogenic, or even really low carb. Well, lower than the S.A.D. probably.
