Broken rib

I have inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs and sternum and I also have a broken rib. I am getting very frustrated as I am unable to do the exercise I loved. Feeling very sorry for myself and therefore comfort eating and weight is piling on. It's already been 4 weeks and I'm not getting any relief. Doctors aren't any help. Some telling me to rest and others telling me to swing my arms. Can anyone give me any help on what to do and what exercise I could do to prevent me comfort eating. Thanks. Grateful for any help big or small. X

Your body needs extra calories to heal bones. Eat at maintenance or a little above while you are healing.
Can you get your doctor to send you to physical therapy?

I could request it by waiting time is about 3 months.1

Broken and cracked ribs are no joke. They hurt way more than people realize and, if your fracture comes apart, your risk puncturing a lung. Honestly, I don't even know how who can think of exercising...I had just a cracked rib a few years ago, and laughing slightly too hard would seize me up with pain (added bonus: I was on crutches at the same time). Find a distracting hobby and eat in a deficit until you get cleared to go back to normal activity.1

Like you said unfortunately most doctors are no help. They routinely give horrible advice on general sport injuries as do many physical therapists, chiros and the like unless they have true training experience with lifting heavy. Using ice and resting muscle strains/pulls or using bands in unconventional ways is the last thing one wants to do for healing quickly and lowering the risk of being injured again yet that is what one could expect to hear for many.
Cracked/broken ribs are no bueno. You failed to mention what your exercise is.
Heal well.

You need to let it go and let your body heal. Broken ribs are very serious issue that are going to take time to heal. The best thing to do is let your body heal remember this is a long-term journey and not a Sprint you don't want to do some damage that may take you out of commission for a longer time than you really need. Best wishes to you and get well0

I just went through something similar. I fell down half a flight of stairs and the bottom stair cracked a rib and dislocated cartilage. It took me two weeks to be able to move around without cringing in pain. Its been 6 weeks now and Im pretty much pain free. Mine must not be as serious as yours is. Take it easy and youll be back working out soon enough. Just a minor setback. It will be a bigger setback if you work out before your body is ready for it. Good luck and best well wishes sent your way.0

You definatly should try for physical therapy that way you can get exercise and stretches in a way a professional seems safe.
I would also try to eat a balanced diet with mostly whole foods but still make sure to have a calorie surplus to allow for healing and aim to get extra amounts of bone healing nutrients like calcium.
Try to get into a book.0
