Facebook or nah???
I've been Facebookless for two years and I feel my life has been more at peace. But lately I've been thinking about making another one. I miss being in contact and being updated with what's going on with my friends. However, I enjoy Facebook not being a pivotal part of my life. My fiancé is happy that I'm considering getting another one but solely to boast about our engagement and the fun things that we do. I haven't had a Facebook since we've been together and she can't wait to be "Facebook official" which is something important to her but I believe it is pointless and illegitimate. (To her it's another engagement... or at least that's how I feel)
Honestly though I am a little torn. A part of me is saying no but a part of me is missing the connection. What do you guys think, should I get one or no?

Could you be Facebook official if you made an account but remained inactive?1

I haven't had a Facebook in 4 years and don't miss it at all. Waste of time in my opinion.. but if you think your missing out on something or want to make your fiance happy you should try and see how you feel in a week or 2. You could just get it on your browser. (So you have to log in each time) since with the app your always "linked in" then you can control how much you see and when. Since you wont get notifications all the time doing it that way.0

The thing you said about "connection" is what facebook does not deliver to me. My list of friends includes a bunch of family, church, and high school mates, as well as a few random others. After a few minutes of scrolling through it, I see that my religiously fanatic kin are still that, my politically fanatic kin are still that, my reticent kin are still that, and my reasonably bon vivant friends are too busy bon vivanting to post.3

Well, you could give it a trial period of one month and see how you feel about it now.
I don't find it peaceful these days. I do stay in touch with people on FB where I would not otherwise. A lot of my friends are very politically minded concerned citizens though and it can be stressful because that is where they share their views constantly. A couple of years ago it was more brags about kids, stupid games and cat pictures. Not anymore.0 -
what's facebook?
wasn't that popular in 2013 ?3 -

"Facebook Official" is a red flag for me. Too much control, bro. Not saying take the ring back to Jared but you should stand pat on this. Your life has improved without it- why roll it back? This would be a valuable lesson for her to see how you define love. Why can't she post your sexy self on her page anyway?

I used to get sucked into Facebook. Then I had to take a long hard look at myself and why I post on Facebook. It became too self absorbing and narcissistic "Hey look at my life type a crap" . I got tired of everyone's selfies and meaningless posts of absolutely nothing. It became way self consuming. So now i dont post, I only like it to keep informed of events I am interested in going to, recipes or news articles. Other than that I dont care what people post of their meaningless lives.1

Oh! You should totally make a joint FB account!2

I deleted my primary FB account years ago (I might go back on it to get certain people's numbers). Right now I have a throwaway Facebook account only for Tinder and Bumble.1

i barley use mine except to keep in contact with family....i check for messages and leave0

I've never had one. I'm not that sociable, and it just doesn't appeal to me. In fact, MFP is the ONLY social media site I'm on. I've heard Facebook is mostly just a bunch of posers showing off, ridiculous family and relationship dramas, political rants, and other useless nonsense. I don't need that in my life. MFP forums are already enough of a time suck for me.0 -
I've had fb for years but I don't use it that often, in fact my family and friends don't even know I've lost weight and that's how I intend to keep it until they see me. I'm just not all that into social media.
Get one if you want and use it for your needs, other than that, just don't log in.1 -
I deleted my Faceache, Fakebook or whatever you want to call it after i was a member here for a few months. This place is so much more interesting and has posts that I'm actually interested in and can learn from. I'll leave Facebook for the teenagers.
I'd like to know the motive behind your girlfriends request, it sounds like there's more to it.... Does she want your exes to know you're taken or something??2 -
I have a couple thoughts on this. Personally, I think that when you asked her to marry you and she accepted, THAT made it official.
If you miss FB as a means to communicate with a few of your friends, then sure, why not make one. There are ways to keep your page a bit more private if that is what you wish.
I wouldn't get a FB page just to announce your engagement, or just to appease her. To me, and I could be wrong, as I don't know you or her, but it seems as if she's just wanting attention... OR Maybe she's excited and wants the whole world to know, I don't know. But in all, the page is for YOU. So IF you want to get in touch with buddies, then yeah, do it for you, otherwise, nah.5 -
I don't have Facebook and I don't want all the druma that hoes in with that site . Plus everyone knows your business on there and tons of gossip. I don't need all that in my life3

for some of us, it never left
that's okay, I still think Betamax is waaay better than those new fangled laserdisk players...1 -
I deleted my facebook account out of a general and growing security concern.
This site is almost as bad, in terms of revealed identity/information...but I hope to have a fully engaged yet limited stay...and when I part ways with MFP say my goodbyes and leave contact info for any relevant parties.
The future of honest, heartfelt online communication is extremely bleak. Enjoy while it lasts. I don't think it will be too many more years before we're forced to retreat from the Internet.

Get a joint fb0 -
I like FB. I keep touch with some old friends that way. I get to keep up with what happens to them without having to call or text, which is awesome (I'm an introvert, and some of them live a continent away, so yeah. Easier). Love the memes too.
Of course I do delete people who get to me (or hide them so they never show on my feed) and I won't accept requests from people I know that have views I don't agree with in the first place.
It's never been a pivotal part of my life though. I don't have a ton of friends on it. I post pictures of my kids (and puppy) for my friends/family to see. Nothing much really. I'm not the person who gloats about how wonderful her life is and I'm more likely to post funny things that happen to me (or stuff I bake, especially when it looks awful). I post a couple times a week maybe?
Most people I know actually don't use FB much. I think I'd feel pretty isolated if I didn't, personally, but I'm a SAHM with just a couple friends, so...0 -
I have family all over the country, so I keep my Facebook open to catch up with them. I've also reconnected with friends I met when I was a kid living in Japan on Facebook. And I have some high school friends. I rarely post, mostly just share posts I see from Delish because I want to make the recipe in the near future. The only way to find my page is if you're a friend of a friend. And I don't accept friend requests from people I don't know. My life is all about living healthy so I spend more time of MFP than I do anything else.0
-
I still have Facebook but I mainly use it to keep in touch with some people since I have a few friends that live in America and I like to know what they're up to and if they're doing okay! I don't post too much on it, it's every now and again that I do or I just look at funny posts. I think I'm starting to spend more time on MFP than Facebook these days0
-
Facebook depends on how it's used. For me it's the only way to stay in contact and interact with certain peer groups and artists, entertainers that I enjoy.1
-
I don't do any social media except MFP and even this can be sort of toxic. I have family all over the place also but the way I see it is this, the people that truly matter know how to get a hold of me if they really wanted to.2
-
For those bashing FB, that's fine but you know you've replaced it with something else... MFP, Snapchat Instagram, Twitter.
Silcon Valley has gotten into our lower stems. We're done.1 -
I deleted mine for a while, and felt peace. But only recently got on it to keep in touch with family. The down side, is that everyone is posting political crap and complain about everything. I like to feed my mind with positivity and with FB, it surely doesn't help. So I'll prob be deactivating it again. I don't use any other Social media platform besides MFP.1
-
Only used for keeping up with family really. I really never even post directly to FB. Everything is a feed from my IG, which is the only truly active social media account I use...because, pictures.1
