I spent the morning in t he hospital where they did abdominal xrays and found the bowels are completely blocked from beginning to end. They are wondering if it is because there is not enough fat in my diet. They told me the bowels need fat in order to work-like butter, salad oil, etc. Has anyone ever heard of this or had this problem? What did you do for relief?? Thanks for your help.

It's crazy , but since I started eating better, I have not been as "regular". I have added Fiber One bars to my daily diet and it seems to be helping.0

You need a stool softener or an enema. Try adding healthy oils to your diet, add some EVOO to your food. Good luck!0

Yes! Your body NEEDS fat, believe it or not. Good fats...fish & nuts have good fat. In fact, almonds are a GREAT source and are tasty.

I work as a nurse, and I would say regular fitness, fruit intake (including prunes), high fiber foods, fat (try to keep it low but still needs to be in your diet), you can take laxatives but remember that they can cause depenancy so don't use for long!
I have tried using a cereal called "holy crap" you can find it at most health food stores and it is made or organic chia, hulled hemp hearts and buckwheat, also very good for your bowels.

This can be a very serious problem and if you don't want a complete bowel obstruction (which you need surgery to repair) get on top of it quick0 -
Eat high fiber food, such as F-Factor cereals or bars. My nutritionist told me told me that not enough fat will also cause your gallbladder to fail.0

It is true that if you do not have enough fat in your diet, you will get sick. Of course, you want to have the "good" fats (olive oil for example) but you probably need to increase that in your diet.0

YES! I have had this problem before on a high fiber, low fat diet. The bulked up fiber needs fat to move it through your system. Start adding some good fats to your diet. I make sure I get 2 teaspoons of oil a day and eat two avocados a week. They are high in fat, but half a small one or a quarter of a medium one isn't that calorie dense.
I STILL have problems sometimes, so I do take Mirlax about 3 times a week. My former nutritionist says it is perfectly safe even to take daily. It's not a laxative, but a softener. I mix it in Sugar-Free grape Kool-aid.

Yes -- I have heard that you need fat to be "regular."
Focus on increasing your healthy fats (unsaturated) like olive oil, fatty fish like salmon, and nuts. For some reason, almonds always seem to make me more regular -- lots of fiber and unsaturated fat! And definitely talk to your doctor, since your issue is extreme.0 -
And drink plenty of water. Your bowels need that too.0

If I go more than 3 days without a movement, I get a large Dunkin Donuts coffee. It's the only one that does it for me. But it has to be a day without a whole lot of meetings at work, as it really does the trick, all morning. LOL
Since starting MFP, I too have had the issues with irregularity.0 -
I have this problem too. I try to add a dash of olive oil whenever I'm cooking a protein. It makes steak and chicken taste yummy, AND helps my digestion.
Stay away from laxatives.... they won't help in the long run.0 -

Generally my personal experience is that dehydration has a lot to do with constipation, as it helps to "keep things flowing"
Try to drink a lot of water and if you don't want to take laxative, it is good to eat things which is rich in fiber, ground flax seeds with a tablespoon and at least 16 oz of water, same goes to psyllium husk both of them is natural "laxative" they swell in your intestines if they get enough water and help bowel movements. Just make sure you take it with a lot of water.
Psyllium husk you can find in pills in the pharmacies everywhere if you don't want to take it as a spoonful of powder.0 -
You can try Miralax, which is milder than a regular laxative, or something like Metamucil.0

Fiber for the win for sure hon - yes when we eat a fatty diet it.. ugh... Lubes things up... With being more careful on what we eat - we need the increased fiber to help us out..
I eat a lot of:
Fiber supplement like "colon cleanse" that I get at GNC - but I take this about once a week or so now...
Oatmeal daily
Baby Carrots
Ezekiel Bread
Veggies
Occasionally I'll do a Fiber One bar or something, but usually the above handle it great for me0 -

TOO FUNNY! I'm still laughing out loud. I think I want to try it just because of the creative marketing.0 -
Drink lots of water, use finely ground flax seed on many things like yr cereals, oatmeal, yogurts, scrambled eggs, ground meats etc..., eat plenty of fruits and veggies, use olive oil in small amounts. Drink cleansing teas found in the health food stores or better yet check out this website: www.drnatura.com They have a wonderful Kleri tea that relaxes you for a good nights sleep and will help you move yr bowels. They also have 30 day cleansing programs. There are some nasty pics too if you search them out but if you have a weak stomach I wouldn't suggest it. You can also take Colace tablets every night as it is just a stool softner - you can get yr drug store brand too which should be the same - I buy my husband the Rite Aid brand. Remember if you take anything like Metamusil you MUST DRINK LOTS OF WATER THROUGHT THE DAY - IF NOT IT WILL SOLIDIFY IN YR SYSTEM AND MADE THINGS WORSE. Hope you feel better soon as it is a miserable feeling. Take care.0

I had the same problem... I increased my fat intake a little and started drinking a cup of black coffee and haven't had a problem since0

No don't take laxatives, your body can get used to having them. I use stool softeners and try and eat plenty of fruit and veggies. I see in your diary you don't have any green veggies. I find that eating all bran 40% works great too. Just 1/2 to a cup a day keeps me regular.... Metamucil or Miralax is helpful too. You do need fat in your diet. It is everything in moderation. but you need fiber to.
I hope they gave you something to help you. I make sure I am regular because my mom and grandmother passed from colon cancer.0 -
I have IBS and go between long periods of constipation and then sudden periods of painful, loose bowels. This has never been caused by diet...I've had it since my teen years...but eating alot of protein has made it worse at times. I've been blocked up like that a few times. My doctors put me on a prescription medication which was awful and made me nauseated all the time so I couldn't stay on it. The another doctor told me to simply take 500 mg of magnesium at night (I take the Phillips tablet) and it works like a charm! Magnesium is a laxative but it is not a stimulant so it is safe to take daily. It keeps me regular. Of course eating alot of fruit and fresh veggies helps and Activia yogurt helps too!0

MFP should tell you how much fat and fiber you need based on your weight, height, age, and activity. If you include 8 glasses of water per day (or 4 16oz bottles of water) you should be fine. Water is really important. Maybe a (very little) bit of olive oil on your salad a couple of times per week. I take 2 gummy vitamin suppliments per day as well. Since eating healthy I do not go 'as often' but I still go at least once per day.0

Regular fiber (the good stuff) in your diet, plus a small amount of healthy fat, and drink plenty of water. I have learned that doing this daily keeps me regular.0

Took a peek at your diary, and your fat intake isn't abnormally low, same with your fiber, although you might want to up it a little
What I did notice was you consume a lot of artificial sweeteners, which looks like can cause bowel issues. I'm wondering if that is the true problem.0 -

Although, MFP does a great job calculating those numbers. Its generic, and each person is different even with the calculations. Sometimes you have to change certain numbers to attune it better to your body.0 -
You should take Vitamin B 6/12 (they come combined) , I had problems with this as well and once i was on that once in the morning for a week it made me really regular.. So I still take it once a day in mornings and haven't had anymore problems0
