In some cases, sure. No arguing thyroid issues and other dysfunctions. But it's over generalized, and often reversible.

What, that it is out of one's hands?1

Personally I look at it not so much as a disease but as an injury you inflict on yourself. Like smoking or taking drugs. in and of themselves they are not diseases. (If I am wrong about that then I am sure there is someone who can inform me).
Having said that obesity (smoking and drugs) cause some pretty chronic diseases.
What point do you wish to make OP?0 -
I just dont understand why it is a chronic disease ?0

"chronic" just means it occurs again and again or extends over a great deal of time. Considering that obesity is something that people live with for decades, it sounds chronic to me. However, that says nothing about the cure.1

Hardly. The cure for obesity is to eat less and/or move more. Even after an operation, the reason people lose weight isn't because they had an operation but because they are put on a low calorie diet.1 -
It's an ongoing condition, so it's chronic. It's not like you're obese for a week or a month, then it goes away.1

Google to the rescue..The American Medical Association has officially recognized obesity as a disease, a move that could induce physicians to pay more attention to the condition and spur more insurers to pay for treatments.
“Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans,” Dr. Patrice Harris, a member of the association’s board, said in a statement. She suggested the new definition would help in the fight against Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, which are linked to obesity.
To some extent, the question of whether obesity is a disease or not is a semantic one, since there is not even a universally agreed upon definition of what constitutes a disease.
Still, some doctors and obesity advocates said that having the nation’s largest physician group make the declaration would focus more attention on obesity. And it could help improve reimbursement for obesity drugs, surgery and counseling.
