The problem with eating too little is that the body gets into starvation mode and retains fat, thinking that it needs to store the energy in case there is no food available soon. I forgot the name of the hormone that causes this. It is true that in order to lose weight you need a deficit in calories, but it cannot be way too big, or the body will get confused and hold on to fat. Actually, I have been struggling with my last few pounds to lose, and I noticed that i may be eating too little and my body is just storing fat. I will try eating more for the next month and see how it goes. Also, be mindful of the type of calories you're eating. Be sure to eat a balanced diet in carbs, protein and fat.

it is about calories in vs calories out. if you arent losing weight then you are eating more than you think, retaining water for various reason, even with a health issue its still about CICO but what your CICO may vary from what any calculator tells you as your BMR could be lower than the calculators state.I have a metabolic disorder and still lose weight, its slower than most but it still comes off.but its possible you could eat more and still lose weight as long as you are still in a deficit. The smaller the deficit and the less you have to lose the slower its going to be.

Which explains all the fat anorexics and obese starving people in third-world countries where food scarcity is a fact of daily life.

    Wait, what?.......

Facepalm, I have to tell myself people talking about starvation mode and eating more to lose weight are hearing it from the side effects of bulk veggies = way less calories thn say bulk butter, So they get to eat more. But at the same time its easy to undereat when going strict honeymoon beginner mode and eating nothing but veggies... Probably where both started from. Then got stretched and warped.

Eat at your set calories OP. Dont undereat, Dont overeat. Yes its a balancing act, To much youll gain to little you risk low energy and the side effects of your body eating its muscle and not being properly fueled. Like hair loss. Or faint/weak feeling, Goodluck exercising weak. Just counter productive is all.

BUT if your not losing weight, It will never be because you are eating to little.

Whoever originally started the "starvation mode" nonsense was somebody with zero knowledge of basic physiology. Yes, there is such a thing as metabolic adaptation/downregulation and it can slow weight loss - but there has never been a valid study which showed that weight loss actually stopped or that people started gaining weight while in a deficit.

Great discussion on it, including some relevant research review: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/another-look-at-metabolic-damage.html/
