GOMAD(Gallon of Milk a Day)

So I have started this gallon of milk a day. I am drinking 2% organic milk. I am stuck at 187 and am trying to put on muscle. IT is supposed to add 2.5 pounds of muscle a week. It is out of the book the four hour body. I am starting a blog to keep track of my progress and to see what other people have done and to see if it worked for them. So give me your thoughts.
So I am 6"1' and weighed 187, neck was 16 inches, waist was 33 and chest was 39.5. Was trying to do around 2000 calories a day and exercised mostly strength training 3 to 5 times a week. Now I try to keep my calories in the 4000 to 5000 range with the gallon of milk a day. I am going to try it for 14 days and see what the difference is if any. So stay tuned for the results.
Has this worked for anyone out there?

It works well for the thousands of people who do Rippetoe's Starting Strength program....but then again, most of them are quite young.
I definitely think 2000 calories per day for a person of your physique and training regiment is too low. Keep us posted on how it goes!0 -

That doesn't sound healthy at all. Whey protein works just as well. Yes -- watch out for kidney stones if you don't drink a crap-ton amount of water to flush out all that calcium.0

I'd be a little worried about the health risks with this. That's a LOT of saturated fat to be consuming. While I understand that you need to eat big to get big, that's quite a bit. I'm a firm believer in balance. So, up the milk, but try the whey as someone else had mentioned, eat peanut butter, oatmeal, all of these things are pretty calorie intensive without overloading you on anything.
And PS I had to listen to a guy pass a kidney stone once... you do NOT want to deal with that, those screams are still burned into my brain!0 -
For what it is worth, I dranks that much when I was preggers with my son and gained a TON of weight! Mine was skim milk thought but I was pushing about 5K extra calories per week just in milk. So, in my experience (though mine was a different reason than yours, milk is like my crack) it works! Good luck!0

Just to clarify in the event there is a misconception: Drinking a gallon of milk a day won't magically add 2.5 lbs of muscle a week (There are no magic formulas), that comes from how efficiently you're doing your strength training along specifically your workout intensity and technique.
Are you working to max fatigue each time and allowing for enough rest (48 hours min) to push harder the next time?
General Recommendations for Strength training os 0.6 - 0.8 g of Protein per LB of body weight, while some high intensity trainers shoot for 1.0 - 1.2 g / LB. Milk serves as a convenient source of protein that is readily available and transportable, and also contains a fair balance of carbohydrate as well.
2,000 does sound quite low for tissue building however.
If you're 187 and shoot for 1g / Lb, that's 187 Grams of protein / day which is 748 Calories from Protein. (4 CAls / Gram)
The MFP Default for Protein is 15% of your diet so shooting for 187 grams/ day would require you to eat 4986 Cals / Day.
Upping your Protein to account for 30% of your diet would bring you up to 2593 Cals / Day.
Any higher than than, and you're hitting weight loss ranges more than mass building as your Carb and fat intake serves as the energy sources which are stored in the muscle cells that the protein builds.0 -

I used to drink a gallon of whole cream-on-top organic milk every day...Maybe I am just creepy (my grandpa drinks the same amount of milk, and is thin and fit), but I didn't gain weight from drinking milk. I gained weight from eating sticks of butter, large amounts of cheese, and eating 2,000+ calories in candy per day....
My point is, milk may make you more trim.
As for the kidney stones, maybe I got lucky, but I have been drinking a good gallon of milk per day (except during my diet) since I was a kid...never had a problem yet Never had a problem with stinky farts as another person posted either lol

I'd go with Eggers training advice and add more protein and workout plans instead.

Yeah I try to max out every workout doing low rep and high weight with increasing the weigth and decreasing the reps. I try not to do that much cardio and focus on weights doing upper body then lower body.0

You are way under eating... I am 5'11" and weigh 175 and I am also having a hard time bulking and I eat 2300-2500 calories a day.
The mile thing doesn't sound good at all. The amount of sugar you would intake from a gallon a day may increase your stomach.

I'm 5'10 165 and eating 3500-4000 cals a day on lift days and maint (2200) on off days. You just need to eat more. Milk is good but i can't imagine that amount of fat pitting on lean muscle. Add some more brown rice oatmeal and chicken to make up for the cals. Gallon of milk might make you gain but not all lean.0

OK I am 7 days into the GOMAD. I gained 7 pounds over the 7 days. Went from 187 to 194. Gained in the neck, chest, thighs but the worst area was the waist. Gained almost an inch in the waist went from 33 to 34. Getting body fat checked today to see what it increased. The problem is the waist is where I gained the most so the trade off is not worth it so far. I spent most of the dayoutside saturday and sunday sweating like a stuck pig so it is definately not water weight. Will keep you posted on the body fat later today but it appears I am back to the srawing board and gomad is out.0

Not that you're old, but something like GOMAD will work much better on a hormone filled 18 year old than you. It's tough for guys in their 30's to add muscle and something like you tried surely added some muscle...along with a few pounds of fat. You can't just add muscle no matter how you do it. Fat always comes along for the ride. You need a caloric surplus to build body mass and GOMAD did that. But it was probably too much.
Maybe start out at 500-750 cals over your maintenance with plenty of protein and go from there. If it's too slow add more calories. Milk is an inexpensive way to add calories as long as it fits in the rest of your goals. Lift big and get plenty of rest. Hopefully you're already squatting and dead lifting.0 -
I am sure age had a lot to do with it. I like to try different things but I am probably a normal guy that just jumps out and tries it and knew what the results would be if I would have dome a little research. I think the GOMAD would work if I did cardio every day and added a testosterone booster in with it but I dont have the time to put into it so i will need something a little slower. Probably about the same or more protein and less carbs and fat. We will see. Going to try to find something new to try this week and next. I have tons of cardio the next 3 days to drop that fat that was added. YEAH!!!!!!0

Sounds like a plan. You may consider skipping the cardio (after you drop the fat from last week) if you're really trying to add weight. Why eat the extra calories just to burn them off again? Some might say it's unhealthy, but I know my heart gets a heck of a workout when I'm lifting heavy. At most, I'd add some sort of interval training 1-2 times/week on non-lifting days.0

I put on 7 pounds in 7 days from it but I havent gotten my bodyfat checked yet so I dont know how much of that was muscle. Definately gained some muscle because neck, chest, calves and waste got bigger. I will know more later when I go to the doc and get the body fat percentage measured.0

Take it from someone who passed a SMALL stone (According to the damn doctor) I considered it LARGE enough. that I'll never do that again if I don't have to.
Smart aleck women will comment that passing a stone isn't anything like deliverying a child and I'll agree. Its worse. Women get Epidurals or go with Ceasarians to deal with the pain. Guys get told to "Gut it out." My best description about pushing that bit of calcium out is that it is like pushing a glass shard out due to the small spurs on the stone.
So, ease up on the calcium. Increase your water intake in the summer and pray you never have to pass a stone.

My doctor told me at my last check-up that too much calcium (over the recommended 100%) over a long period of time is harmful to one's heart.0

A gallon of milk a day sounds like an extremely bad idea. Although you definitely need a good amount of protein to build muscle, even 2% milk has way too much sugar and fat if you are trying for a clean bulk. There are way (or Whey) better options out there. Otherwise your belly is going to out gain your muscle growth.0
