For Type Two Diabetics, Medications and weight loss

I have been on this weight loss journey sice Dec. 2010. Lost close to 33 pounds, then was taken off insulin and put on Actos in April. My weight started fluctuating and did so for a couple of months and now it's just steady going up. I have gained 14 pounds of the 33 lost. Went to the doctors this morning because I have developed another "side effect" water retention. Was told by the doctor that the Actos has caused the increase in apetite and the water retention which has resulted in the weight gain but all he could tell me is to keep doing what I am doing and we will monitor it. I am so frustrated. I feel like I am fighting a losing battle, I do not want to use the medications and the diabetes as a excuse. Can you over come the side effects and get control over your body again and start losing again? can you over come the feeling of being hungry all the time? Can you get the water retention under control?
I really wanted to be fit and fab for my 40th birthday in November, but I feel like I am losing control and letting old habits come back into play!
I do not want to end up back on insulin, either, but I keep catching myself eating the same stuff that put me on it in the first place.

I used to be on a combo (Gliburide-metformin) with a loss of 30 lbs I was switched to metformin once a day. The combo was making me sick.

Talk to your doctor about different options.

I was taken off metformin because I was in the small percentage that it caused liver problems in.

I would definitely keep working, if nothing else, when you go back to the doctor it will show that the cause isn't from your bad eating habits or lack of exercise. I had the same problem with the diabetic medication I was first put on. My doctor basically gave me the same advice but I quit taking my medication (wouldn't reccommend that either); but my doctor was more willing to switch my meds. I gained 10lbs the first week and was hungry non-stop. Don't let it get you down. Keep working, and keep that communication open with your doctor. Some meds just don't work for some people!!

oki, sorry about my suggestion, only saw your post later :)

for type II insulin seems a little harsh...i am on metformin as well and i have been doing fantastic...i started with twice a day and now im on one pill a day and doing great! you should seek a different opinion and even talk to your doctor about merformin...it's the safest (i work in clinical trials and i studied metformin) only probs are the gastrointestinal issues, but with time are reduced.
    best of luck :)
