Sugar is not to be omitted from your diet. Your brain needs sugar. We function with the help of sugar. What needs to be done is as we all know, follow a balanced diet. Everything in moderation. Be mindful. That is all.

It's been a few years now since I've watched this but I thought it was worthwhile too.

    To put it very mildly.

Lustig is a woo peddler who cherry picks research to support his agenda, which is not at all in agreement with science.

He is also a poo peddler.

LOL, no. You can omit sugar completely from your diet and be fine. Your body will make the glucose it needs from the complex carbohydrates you eat, or from fat and/or protein (gluconeogenesis) if you don't eat many carbs.

I watched it a few years ago and found it interesting. I think there is something to what he has said.

No, it is not the sole cause of the obesity epidemic but I doubt it is benign when it comes to our health.

No your body doesn't need sugar. It doesn't need carbs at all, for that matter (and a few people manage to function just fine with a diet containing virtually no carbs) (not me!). the body can make everything it needs from fats and proteins.

so then how does one get the nutrients they need that fruits and veggies provide? those things are carbs(sugar)

I think they mean that dietary sugar or carbs are not needed, which is true.

... I think my carb total for this month during an animal products challenge is about 30g. Carbs definitely haven't been needed.

they may not be needed to function, but if you cut out fruits and veggies would you not be denying your body of certain nutrients only those things can provide? how is the body going to make certain nutrients from fats and protein if the food doesnt contain it?

@Marigolds333 thanks for sharing that the type of calories consumed can make a difference in weight loss/gain.

This is not true; there are a few things that we need in order to function. There are nutrients that are called essential nutrients. These have to be consumed by humans and cannot be made by the body from fats and proteins! That is why they are called essential. The Wikipedia page is quite decent in giving a readable overview of that. But for instance only humans, primates and guinea pigs are not able to produce vitamin C themselves, therefore we need to take it up through our food.
