It is a ridiculous diet that is very restrictive.
It has nothing at all to do with the military.6 -
It works only because it is ridiculously low calorie. That's it. There's nothing special about the food combinations.4

Work for what? You'll lose some water weight, maybe some fat, but when you go off of it, because it's such a ridiculous "diet", you'll gain it back because it didn't actually teach you anything about eating healthy, appropriate sized portions.3

Here's a recent thread with good discussion, including a proponent of this diet, which you won't find many of around here.
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10557868/military-diet/p1
As mentioned repeatedly in that thread and every thread on the Military Diet:- It is a random, arbitrary sampling of (IMO) not very appetizing foods combined to result in a very low calorie level for a period of time.
- It lacks a lot of micronutrients
- It doesn't instill good long term habits about nutrition, balance, building a sensible diet for yourself.
- It can result in short term weight loss but most people who have tried it report that they gain the weight back.
Good luck.4 -
@Monreal1574 I've did it before lost 6 lbs!1

That was mainly water weight, OP can do that by eating any foods at a calorie deficit.1 -
lol I looked it up and thought. Wow, I've had days like that, which means....
Eat higher protein to help you lose weight.
Eat in a calorie deficit.
IIFYM the rest.
Repeat.0 -

You got that as a summary of the military diet? All I get is:
3 days a week eat weird food combinations like tuna, saltines, hot dogs and ice cream with half a grapefruit
Be hungry all the time
Probably binge eat the other 4 days of the week
Maybe lose water weight but gain it all back when you get bored with saltines and tuna fish.4 -

I tried to distill it to the things that will actually work, for the OP's benefit I totally discounted the 3 day/short term dieting thing, because we all know that's just garbage.1 -

See you in a week, 'cause that ain't a plan.
Just sayin'3 -
Head- brick wall4

It's like ADF if you did all the fast days in a row, ate a bit more, and ate stuff that isn't interesting or tasty or especially nutritious and pretended like they'd magically have some special effect on weight loss that other foods don't have. Cool.0

Or you could just, you know, start eating healthy and exercising... and if you do that and maintain a reasonable calorie deficit over time, then you'll lose weight AND create long term sustainable habits that will help you achieve your goals and transition to maintenance....0 -

I don't disagree that the foundation of the military diet is an unhealthy approach - but I don't look at the components of it and think yep, that looks like high protein and IIFYM. Also, how does eating high protein help you lose weight?0 -
I know nothing about this diet. but when I was 18 I joined the canadian armed forces reserve and served for about 5 years. On coarse when training we ate exclusively at the mess... and we ate like pretty bad stuff and tons of it. I mean we ate probably 2-3x what a normal person would... so much food lol. The rub though is that we were extremely active. 1 hour of PT in the am and 1 hr in the evening... on top of a very physically active day.
Any diet called 'military' would scare the jesus out of me.... no thanks... at my age it would kill me.0 -

Higher protein helps you lose weight by making it easier to feel full. A proven approach is to have protein for breakfast, let's say and egg or two, and you will find it easier to not eat a larger lunch. There's no magic, it just helps with satiety.0 -

It doesnt work that way for everyone. some people are satiated by carbs, others by fat, some people its a combo of all 3 macros and higher amounts of fiber. while that may work for you it wont for everyone. If I were to eat 2 eggs for breakfast I would be hungry an hr later. my oatmeal is over 600 calories and very high in carb(70-90g) and over 40g of protein. that keeps me full for a few hours.if I were to change all that to a protein shake with high protein foods mixed in, I would again be hungry an hr later. protein for me is not satiating.1
