recently tried using gatorade, the sugar made my head spin.
there is apparently one you can get at a health food store that is an electrolyte replacement without sugar. lemon-lime flavor. It's name sounds something like veetal? vitale? i forget. i grabbed the wrong one, it turned out to be lemongrass flavored appetite supressant.0 -

Definitely water. Drinking gatorade regularly is awful for your teeth and sugar consumption.0

If I sweat a lot (like I do on an all-day hike) I usually drink G2, the lower sugar version of Gatorade. During and after normal workouts, I just drink regular water.0

Water or a protein shake for sure. Gatorade and other 'sports drinks' are just full of sugar and sodium. I can't stand the idea of drinking right back all the calories I just worked so hard to burn. Sports drinks are best used by athletes, not 'regular' exercisers. For us, water will do just fine for hydration.0

Always water and usually a protein shake also. I like Gatorade, but I hate the sugar and calories that go with it.0

I would say neither, go for Propel Zero, it's a gatorade product or smart water. They have the electrolytes but not the carbs or calories of gatorade.0

I drink Low Cal G2 gatorade.... i get really bad headaches when i work out ... i thought it was the heat and my mom told me to try drinkin somethin with a little sugar or electrolytes... the g2 seems to have helped... i never get headaches when I drink it after workin out0

Gatorade was made for the Florida Gators, so to a Georgia Bulldog like me, it's unacceptable. :P

I recently read on a Yahoo news article that water is the better choice. It said that Gatorade is really only beneficial to people like athletes that are doing EXTENSIVE exercise and workouts. Like other people have mentioned, it is just extra calories and sugar.0

I do a lot of cardio so if I do not hit 100 oz for the day., I will drink a powerade zero. Grape is the best...not overly sweet and strawberry makes me want to gag0

The electrolytes are nice but I hate the fake sugars in G2. Today I mixed my Gatorade with water 1/2 and 1/2. Little pick me up for the long bike ride but not enough calories to weigh me down.0

If my workout is cardio based just water. If I weight train I drink a recovery drink called Dark Matter.0

I like G2 and Gatorade, but only drink them if I'm doing a race or a major major workout. I usually dilute them with water, too. They taste too sweet anymore.0

A few years ago I was working out pretty heavily in the gym primarily cardio. I was spending 3-4 hrs a day and sweating like mad all the time. After about a month of this I had no energy and could barely move. I was drinking plenty of water, literally 1-2 gallons a day. My neighbor a nurse noticed and told me I had to get some Gatorade in me. Once I started getting it into me I was much better, but for about a week there I could barely move.
So now I make sure even if I'm watering down the G2 I do it to make sure I get some extra electrolytes in me. Best of luck.0 -

And one additional thing I want to say about this topic, is that people love to bash gatorade for its sugar and salt. I'm not saying anyone here did, but I do hear it all of the time.
I guess that's gatorade's fault for marketing it to people who don't really need it and then those people discovering that it doesn't suit their needs.
But the sugar, salt and other electrolytes are all important for a distance runner. Gatorade has its uses.
Your body uses the simple sugars for instant energy. This can help prevent the wall.
But just like any other energy source, if you don't use it up, it gets stored on you. But, in a distance runner, this gets used up.
The salt helps prevent hyponatremia, which can have all sorts of nasty side effects, including seizures and death.

However, the average person does not need to worry about those things on a regular basis.0 -

Ummm... low fat chocolate milk after a rough workout...... or a protein drink (Jay Robb). Otherwise it's water, water, water.
I agree with pp about long distance workouts, or working out for many hours- you need something. If you are working out for an hour or less then water or a small glass of low fat chocolate milk (low sugar, too. )0
