Hello, I have struggled with binge eating and chronic over eating for years. A lot of it most likely can be chalked up to emotional eating and an addiction to dessert foods. Anybody have any tips / success stories for over coming binge eating?

Plan a menu based on food you actually like. Plan for snacks. Include fruit in your diet. Never allow yourself to get too hungry.

What are people's thoughts on eliminating sugar completely from my diet vs. incorporating it to mitigate cravings?

How about eliminating added sugars? I don't see anything wrong with fruits, particularly those with a lower glycemic index. Berries are a delicious treat. Proteins and fat do keep you satiated longer, IMHO but the hard part is listening to your body's hunger cues. I frequently have to ask myself if I am truly hungry or just *want* something, and yes, I still occasionally binge. It's a battle against a lifetime of bad habits. I agree with Olds above---planning is your friend. I always have some sort of snack handy in my purse so that I can avoid the pitfalls of actual hunger (versus boredom). Sometimes boredom wins but at least the snacks that I keep handy are better choices for me. Good luck.

I've lost a little over 130lbs, and the vast majority of my being overweight was binge eating. I have to practice a form of food abstinence, I do not eat "trigger" foods. Simple sugars and simple flours (like bread, or sweets) send me into a hunger rampage. Complex sugars and carbs like potatoes and strawberries don't. Like others have mentioned, planning my meals and knowing exactly what I'll be eating helps a lot.

During times of emotional distress it's still difficult because I no longer have that "rapid release" from the pain of it, but it's something you have to truly want. At the end of the day it has to come from you in the form of willpower. When I am upset and have the urge to hide and gorge, I remind myself of how it makes me feel the next day, and that's usually enough to stop me.

Sadly, I didn't know "trigger foods" were a thing, so thank you, Geo for actually using that term!

One slice of pizza releases mr hyde. It takes me a couple of days to get cravings back under control. For some people its fries, others it is ice cream. It's all about listening to your body and finding what works for you as an individual. There is a lot of us who avoid simple sugars and flours for this reason.
