Firstly you can't spot reduce. Secondly, the best way to lose inches is calorie deficit.... Mainly achieved through diet.4

Don't overcomplicate it - sticking to your calorie goal is what matters for weight loss. There are no magic foods. If you're new to logging, perhaps start by logging what you currently eat for a few days. You'll learn how your habits look compared to MFP recommendations. You'll see where you need to cut back, swap foods for better options, increase other foods etc. If you reduce portions after a few days to fit the goals and find you're hungry, you can then play around with macro breakdown, meal timing, meal size etc to suit you.
Definitely get a scale to weigh all solids, measure all liquids, and check the database entries you use - there are many inaccurate ones!6 -
Agreed with the previous posters. I'll just add that you can keep it simple and get a handle on your calories first. Then you can worry about the nutrition aspect (this is important as well). One thing at a time.
Good luck.2 -

This is great advice.
Keep it simple to start. Mfp goves you a calorie goal and you should try to get as close to that goal daily, you don't have to be perfect.
