Weight gain after 2 weeks of boot camp?

I started a Boot Camp June 1, been going pretty consistently to all the workouts and following their meal plan for the last 12 days. Weighed in this morning +2 lbs... what's up with that?! I don't feel like I've gained muscle that fast and my pants are so tight.

Is it possible for our bodies to metabolize a high protein diet differently (I'm 41)? I feel like I'm full of so much egg and chicken.

How many calories are you eating each day?

It's likely water weight from the exercise - your muscle fibers will store extra water as a part of recovery. I recommend taking measurements in addition to the scale so you have more metrics and a better full picture of what your body is doing.

    One thought and one question:

    1) How many calories are you eating with their diet? If the consumed calories are too high, you could be gaining actual weight, however, I suspect it's the next point at play.

    2) While you won't build that much muscle, the exercise will necessitate that your muscles retain water for repair. This is a natural process, and the water retention can last for some time (2-6 weeks). It will drop off eventually.

But how many calories are you eating?

It's most likely water retention from the exercise or other things...two weeks isn't really enough time to see what's going on, particularly if you only have 2 data points.

In addition to all the other points already made, my TOM make me go up 1-3lbs no matter how I have been eating. So like @cwolfman13 said, there may be other reasons (if everything else seems to be in order with your intake and logging).

Thanks for the info so far!

The calories were coming in around 1320, which is why I thought my food intake was okay. We did take measurements as well but not scheduled to measure again until the end of the month.

Could the water retention also explain my feet and hands feeling swollen when I wake up in the morning?? I've heard a couple people in class talking about water retention pills they have been taking, is this why?

Yes, the swelling is a sign of water retention. I wouldn't bother with taking pills to remove the water though. I understand that the higher scale reading is frustrating, but the retention is a natural process that your body is using to recover. Using diuretics to remove it, can cause electrolyte imbalances. I wouldn't mess with it, just ride it out. 1320 calories isn't enough to cause weight gain. Are you otherwise active, or sedentary outside of the bootcamp?

Thanks, nutmegoreo! I have a 8-5 desk job so mostly sedentary Mon-Fri with weekend hikes/walks/playing with my kids.

Just checking. If you were otherwise active, I would say you could probably do well to increase that calorie intake a bit. The lost will be a bit slower, but you would preserve more of your muscle mass. I loved my bootcamp classes, but can't make it to them anymore. They kicked our butts, but you really need to find a balance in fueling that activity with the right foods too.
