This weekend I'm going to an amusement park and will be doing A LOT more walking than I ususally do. What's the best way to keep track of burned calories for this vs. what I burn on a normal day?

Do you have a pedometer? You can get a simple one pretty inexpensive at places like WalMart. This will keep track of your steps. You can then use your steps to calculate your burned calories. I suggest wearing it before you go to calculate what your average steps per day, that way you can subtract that from your park total. You dont really want to calculate your normal every day steps rather, the ones beyond that.

You can also wear a heart rate monitor that will keep track of your calories burned for the day.

How about you don't worry about calories burned and just have fun.
Just came from 6 hours at a park two days ago. Walked huge amounts (no lines for rides).
It was the eating that was challenging. So I didn't really eat anything. Lost 3 pounds between the start of the day and the end. Of course a lot was water weight.

Really. Have fun. And let your body just burn off those calories.
  • I think there is a 2 mile per hour pace in the saved exercises. For the total time I am there, I divide it by two and say that is how long I walked. Not a very exact science but I think it is worth tracking because with eating only what my body needs, I can feel it needing more food when I do go to places where you walk a lot (i.e., zoo, park, etc.)

If you have a smart phone, especially on an Android platform, there are programs that you can download onto your phone that will help keep track of all that for you. I used one when I went to Six Flags about two months ago. The one I used also keep track of the amount of exercise and calories I burned while I work out (cardio, etc). If you don't have one, all I can say is have fun...and fyi...about four hours of walking Six Flags was close to 900 calories burned. (I don't do rides, just walk). Have fun!!!

Agreed on the go have fun thing! Stay hydrated, enjoy the time. This poster definitely lost 3 pounds of water weight!

I'm going to an amusement park in about a week with my family, and I plan on enjoying the day and not worrying about how many calories I've burned. My personal opinion is that anything outside of getting my workout clothes on and getting really sweaty isn't something I count for calories burned. So, I don't count it when I clean my house, do yard work, go to amusement parks, go waterskiing, etc. Those extra little workouts are just icing in the cake!

I'm not really 'worried' about it, I just want to make sure I am refueling enough - some days I tend to not eat as much as I need to.

Just make sure to stay hydrated and eat. My philosophy is bad but the way I see it...if I do all that walking (and pushing a stroller I might add LOL) I deserve to eat a funnel cake as a dessert, provided I had something relatively good during the day. If want to eat loaded fries, there's no way I can have my funnel cake. I might eat a hot dog but I don't eat the bun...or I'll have a chicken cesar salad (yes, I realize the majority of the calories is the dressing). Main thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy yourself and keep yourself healthy!!! You'll probably offset your calories by all the walking you do. (Oh, and if you go to a water amusement park, going into the lazy river or it's equivalent and jogging through it instead of sitting in the tube is excellent...you'll feel it in your legs in the morning)

I hear ya! My biggest thing about going to an amusement park is not wanting to eat as much, 'cause the options of what they have aren't the greatest! But, you're right...you need to make sure to refuel! Eye ball portion sizes and try to stick to healthier options :) And most importantly...have fun!!!! I love amusement parks. I love roller coasters. I love the sun!
