Well . . . I am past menopause and it was difficult on many levels, mostly with the weight gain and fatigue. That's when I gained my 26 lbs and I am only now serious about taking it off. My suggestion would be to not wait like I did, but to pay close attention to your diet and exercise while you're going through menopause because it will be much easier to handle than trying to take off a whole lot of weight afterwards. I found the sweet cravings really difficult to handle, which I think is why I gained the weight. So watch your carbs. And good luck!

I'm on a low carb diet, but only Mon - Fri.
I've lost 11lbs in 3 months.
Best deal has been replacing porridge for breakfast with full fat Greek style yogurt. I can honestly say it keeps me full until lunchtime, and often beyond, and I do a physical job.
Keep well away from low fat products. They are full of carbs (body sees carbs as sugar) and do cause hunger spikes.
Keep protein high to stave off hunger.5 -
I was abruptly thrown into menopause 4 years ago when I had my ovaries removed. I do take low dose hormone replacement as I am only 41 years old. I did find I gained more weight following surgery but was overweight prior to it to.
Once I set my mind to it, June 1st, 2016, and using mfp to log my food and follow a calorie in/calorie out deficit plan I have lost 79 lbs as of a few days ago. I have become more active, taken up running and yoga, and feel great.
I do not eat low carb or low fat or follow any type of fad diet. I eat what I like and what I always ate, in smaller portions. I sometimes eat over my daily allotment, sometimes less. I am way more aware of actually being hungry versus bored or thirsty. I rarely drink my calories because I would rather eat something delicious like a good steak or sushi or chocolate or avocado or nuts etc. so if I want a sweet drink I will have a little honey in my tea or a diet pop etc. I do splurge on the occasional strongbow or hard cider. I work 12 hour shifts as a nurse, around 10 shifts per month. I run 3-5 days a week, 20 minutes a day. I do yoga most days, sometimes 5 minutes and sometimes 30 minutes. I am not really into "exercising". I'd rather go for a walk or mow the lawn or weed the garden etc.
You have to find what works for you. But it really is possible.

Starting this journey with occasional hot flashes and exhaustion...I'm ready to loose these extra pounds before it gets out of control...I feel like I'm on the edge of loosing this battle. I'm so glad I found this thread tonight. Thanks for sharing your experiences!6

I started menopause when I was 42, I'm 63 now. I lost 40 pounds since last year june. It wasn't very hard but these last 15 lbs aren't budging much3

Hi according to my doctor I would be perimenopausal because I still have periods on and off. However I do notice I get night sweats and my weight appears to be glued to my middle. So frustrating and no matter what I do I can not seem to get rid of 30 pounds that I need to improve my health. I wanted to share a site that I found very helpful it is called women to women. There articles are written by a doctor and they explain a lot. Sugar has a very negative affect on perimenopausal and menopausal women as well as lots of carbs. These have an impact on our insulin cortisol levels in our body which as it turns out directly affect weight, night sweats etc. I would love to be apart of your discussion. I lot my mom before I was 30 and I do not really have anyone to talk to about the whole weight experience and menopause. I just turned 58 in March and apparently as strange as it sounds it is not that usual to start this process late in your 50's. Guess I find it really difficult because for the vast part of my life I was thin, that is until I hit 50 then everything began to change.5

I've lost 40# so far, since last July and am 58. It can be done, and I'm not the only one who has. I've mostly just cut back on the amounts of food I eat to stay within my calories, and am much less likely to have a beer in the evening. Like a lot of other posters, I mostly eat meals cooked from scratch, but still have dessert, sticky buns, wings or pizza occasionally so that dieting doesn't suck. It's a new way of life, so feeling deprived shouldn't be part of it.4

The struggle is real! I'm 55, 10 years in menopause and it's so hard. Feel like I almost into a brick wall. I lose patience because I work hard at it and the weight doesn't come off! And I'm hungry all the time! I have 30+ pounds to lose and feel like I've tried everything!2

Not only am I struggling with full menopause, but I am a 2yr bone marrow transplant survivor (Hodgkin's Lymphoma) The combined has hit me hard in the weight gain area. Never had to worry or work so hard to lose a few pounds. Well, 20lbs gained and I am working hard to get this off. I have switched from my usual run it off attitude and am doing a crossfit type of workout. I am feeling great but after 4wks of hard exercise, NOTHING, not a darn lb lost. I feel great and hope I begin to look better soon. The struggle is REAL and I hate it!1

Wow, glad to know I am not going crazy!! These mood swings and fatigue are Insane! Have to say tho, working out helps tremendously, and I have motivated my sister to join in! Good luck guys and keep going!2

So interesting to read all the issuea we have with menopause. I'm 57 and have gained about 20 lbs in the last 5-6 years. I was never thin but athletic. Now I have that middle that just won't go away. I have a terrible problem wiht no sleep. I've tried everything.
Last year I lost 10 lbs (my husband did it with me so easier with him on board). I want to lose another 10 lbs but it's not easy. I do like a cocktail on the weekends. I think cutting out alcohol will help. But really counting calories with MFP really works. NO matter what the calories are. You/me just have to make up our mind to stay within the calorie allotment we are given with MFP. I go to spin 3 times a week (hard classes too), walk 4 miles once a week and hike on the weekends . I do a lot of yard work too. I am staying the same weight. I know if I log consistently I will lose. I've done it before...1 -
Hello ladies! I appear to be in "perimenopause" at almost 51. I thought menopause meant fewer periods...not the case for me! I now have a 23-day cycle with three days of horrible cramps each time. I'm also about 50 lbs overweight and know it's not going to get any easier if I don't do something about it now. I'd love to get some support and accountability from others in the same stage of life!2

Ugh - count me in! Turning 50 in a few months and just starting the fun;-). Have started some hot flashes and am always tired. That plus the sudden ten pounds glued to my waist are starting to piss me off! Figure I need to deal with it now before the # keeps creeping up. Good to have this group - guess misery loves company!0

Hello All. I'm 47 and perimenopausal. No night sweats yet. I'm on the ketogenic diet and it has really helped me moods. And I feel great. SUGAR is the devil. In a nutshell I watch any insulin spikes. It's been a month or so now and I'm seeing huge positive changes mentally and physically. I don't mind getting older in fact I bet all you feel the same when I say I am MORE confident in myself (mind/body) NOW then in my 20s or even 30s. I refuse to fall apart. Healthy means sexy to me. Let's go through this journey together. We share this world why not share experiences.1

I am here with you all. I am 50 and perimenopausal. I have lost 70lbs but I still have 60 to go and of course it is all in my middle! I look like a golf ball on a tee!! UUGGHH!! The thing I hate the most is the cramps. I never had cramps until I got in my 40's and now that I am 50 it feels like someone has my right ovary in a vise grip trying to pull it out every month! Also I have terrible mood swings the week before I start. I am such a witch that week!

I was thrown into full blown menopause when I went through surgery and treatment for breast cancer 5 years ago. I'm 57 years old and during chemo I gained 40 lbs! I still have 25 lbs of that which I cannot get rid of! Like so many others on here, a lot of it is belly bloat which is just ridiculous now. I tried the low carb style of eating which had always worked for me in the past, but not this time! Sugar is a big piece of my struggle. Sugar and carbs are definitely my enemy both weight-wise and health-wise. For me, not only do I want to look good, have more energy and get rid of the fatigue, sleep better and reverse this brain fog and horrible memory...but I also do not want the cancer to return and getting rid of sugar is a huge part of that. I just had knee surgery 7 days ago, so I've been inactive for a week which certainly does not help either!
Feel free to add me if you'd like. I find the more support and motivation I have, the better I tend to do. I'm working to lose 30 lbs and keep it off. I'm looking to make lifestyle changes, and I want 2017 to be the year I take my life back!2 -

Yep! Had my ovaries removed a year ago..I'm on HRT, but I'll tell you the few pounds I have gained does not seem to want to come off the matter how hard I try.0
