In spring and summer every year, New Yorkers are treated to the celestial eye candy known as Manhattanhenge.

That's pretty badass. I would hang out to watch that.

GF and I went to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (world's largest Gothic cathedral) on Amsterdam Ave. and 110th St. in Manhattan at 4:30 AM on Saturday, June 17th, to see the annual Summer Solstice concert performed by the Paul Winter Consort. They have been doing a Summer and/or a Winter Solstice concert every year for 38 years. The winter shows are always fairly lavish productions, with lots of dance and visual theater. The summer show was mor contemplative, basically sitting in the dark, listening to New Age music, and watching the rising sun illuminate the stained glass windows of the cathedral...very peaceful.

Celebrating the solstices is the closest thing to a religion that makes any sense to me, since the sun is the most venerated object in history, without which nothing else is possible on this planet, so I'm glad that there is a way to celebrate and acknowledge that.

Whatever your beliefs, I highly recommend these concerts to anyone who is in NYC in the third week of June or December.

I went there for summer solstice a few years ago when it occurred on a saturday. There were about 12,000 people there from all over the world. It is one of the best things I've ever done, I met some of the most interesting people. Everyone stayed up all night dancing and playing music.Next time it's on a Saturday, I'm there!

I didn't realize the earth was that close to the sun and almost the same size. My science books growing up were all wrong.

I was laughing Monday when it was 100 degrees and I realized it wasn't "summer" yet.

    But still - yay!

My husband LOVES summer! But it always cracks me up that the summer solstice makes him sad, because even though it's the beginning of summer, the days are getting shorter from now on. Happy summer everyone!
