Go to the goals section of myfitnesspal and fill in the information.

A deficit when you consume less than your maintence calories.

Plug your numbers in here and set what deficit you want. Usually 1 lb per week is good unless obese. It'll give you daily calories to eat. Eat back all or most of exercise adjustments.

I filled the goals section out, I just wanted to know the science behind it. Thank you for telling me what it is.

Your TDEE - Total Daily Energy Expenditure is your maintenance calories.

Anything less than TDEE = calorie deficit. Calorie deficit = weight loss.

So if you maintain at 2,000 calories & want to lose 1 pound a week (3,500/7) you eat 500 calories less, or 1500 calories.

Your body burns a particular amount of calories each day. That's your TDEE. If you eat more than that number, you will gain weight. If you eat less than that number, you will lose weight.

The difference between your TDEE and the amount you actually eat is your deficit (if you're eating less than you're TDEE) or your surplus (if you're eating more than your TDEE).

In weight loss, the amount you lose and how fast will be determined by how much your deficit is. Approximately -500 a day (so eating 500 calories less than your TDEE) will theoretically lose you 1lb a week (making allowance for water weight, hormones and margin of error).
